Article Synopsis
  • This study assessed the diagnostic value and cost-effectiveness of using the i-STAT® point-of-care analyzer for measuring cardiac troponin I (cTnI) levels in dogs and cats suspected of heart disease.
  • A total of 240 animals (120 dogs and 120 cats) were examined, comparing the results from i-STAT® with two established laboratory assays (IMMULITE® 2000 and ACCESS®).
  • While the i-STAT® method effectively differentiated normal and elevated cTnI levels, caution is advised when interpreting high cTnI values, as there is a notable bias compared to traditional assays, particularly important for diagnosing severe cardiac conditions like myocarditis or acute ischemia.

Background: Palatal dysfunction (PD), which encompasses palatal instability (PI) and intermittent dorsal displacement of the soft palate, is the most common performance-limiting upper respiratory tract obstruction in young Thoroughbred racehorses. Soft palate thermocautery (SPT) performed under general anaesthesia is a routinely performed procedure for PD in some countries, but the procedure for and outcome of SPT performed under standing sedation has not been published.

Objectives: (1) To describe a technique for SPT performed under standing sedation; and (2) to assess post-operative performance in horses compared to controls using the Racing Post rating (RPR), British Horseracing Authority official rating (OR), Performance Index and Earnings.

Previous studies have compared the use of the Slocum- jig to the deformity reduction device (DRD) jig for the correction of distal femoral deformities of varying degrees in the frontal plane. The objective of the current study is to further investigate the use of the mini DRD jig in comparison to the Slocum jig for correction of varying degrees of torsional deformities of the distal femur. Femoral models (n = 60) were developed based on a CT scan of an approximately 16.

Historical Account of Managing Overabundant Wild Asian Elephants in Myanmar by the Kheddah System of Capture: Philosophy, Principles and Practices.

Animals (Basel)

August 2024

Asian Elephant Management, Asian Elephant Specialist Group (The International Union for Conservation of Nature), 12 Blackwell Place, Sheffield S2 5PX, South Yorkshire, UK.

When standard methods of human-elephant conflict mitigation are not successful, free-ranging wild elephants may continue to come into close contact with people. This results in more frequent and severe conflict, with consequences ranging from crop raiding to loss of human and elephant lives. Understandably, in such situations, local communities may want to be rid of entire herds of elephants.

Article Synopsis
  • Gliosarcoma is a rare brain tumor in cats that has not been previously associated with changes in the hippocampus, but a case was reported involving a cat with complex partial seizures and orofacial symptoms.
  • A 16-year-old cat showed symptoms like disorientation and ataxia, and MRI revealed a tumor in the right piriform lobe along with abnormalities in the hippocampus.
  • Due to insufficient biomaterial, additional testing for associated conditions was not conducted, but the presence of gliosarcoma suggests that similar cases warrant MRI and antibody testing for proper diagnosis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to differentiate between hindlimb ataxia and bilateral hindlimb lameness in dogs using pressure-sensitive walkways (PSWs) to analyze their gait parameters.
  • A total of 46 dogs were examined, divided into three groups: normal, orthopaedic (with bilateral hindlimb issues), and neurologic (with ambulatory paraparesis).
  • Key findings revealed that the orthopaedic group placed more weight on their forelimbs, while the neurologic group had longer forelimb stance times, indicating distinct gait characteristics among the groups.

Teams composed of racially diverse individuals from varied backgrounds offer broader experiences, insights, and methods in clinical approaches, communication, and may offer cultural familiarity to clients. Prioritizing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging on ethical grounds is essential, but the advantages of engaging Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color (BIPOC) individuals in clinical specialist roles surpass ethical considerations alone. Research and industry data show a clear link between team diversity and better patient outcomes and business performance, notably in profitability and market expansion.

A REVIEW OF NEOPLASIA IN PROSIMIANS IN HUMAN CARE FROM 1995 TO 2022.

J Zoo Wildl Med

September 2024

Carolina Veterinary Specialists, Huntersville, NC 28078, USA.

This retrospective study of neoplasia in prosimians in human care reports histologically diagnosed cases from the archives of a nondomestic species pathology service between 1995 and 2022, primarily submitted from zoological institutions. To date, the only prior retrospective study of neoplasia in prosimians, published in 2009, was conducted with cases from a single institution specializing in prosimian noninvasive research and care. In the present study, a total of 153 neoplasms from 109 individuals were identified in the pathology service archives.

A new record of fleas from nilgai antelope in southern Texas and fleas from other wildlife.

J Med Entomol

November 2024

United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Plains Area; Knipling-Bushland U.S. Livestock Insects Research Laboratory, Cattle Fever Tick Research Unit, 22675 N. Moorefield Road., Moore Airbase, Building 6419, Edinburg, TX, USA.

Wildlife are hosts of ectoparasites, such as fleas and ticks that may transmit human and animal pathogens. Little is known about the ecology of many ectoparasite species native to southern Texas, or their role in pathogen maintenance and transmission. Much attention has been given to the role of nonnative nilgai antelope as cattle fever tick hosts and agents of dispersal, but little attention has been given to other ectoparasites that may utilize nilgai antelope as hosts.

Department of Veterinary Medicine, School of Specialization in Inspection of Food of Animal Origin "G. Tiecco", University of Teramo, Località Piano D'Accio.

Article Synopsis
  • Consumers are seeking food products that remain "natural" and "fresh" throughout their shelf life, driving research into non-thermal technologies for food safety.
  • One such method, thermosonication using low-frequency ultrasound, effectively reduces bacterial loads, with specific focus on optimizing temperature and treatment time.
  • Results show that treatment at 50°C for 15 minutes was the most effective, but strain variability highlighted the need for tailored applications in the food industry to ensure safety and quality.

Several pain scoring systems have been validated to measure pain in dogs. However, pain may not be adequately assessed since these tools are associated with high-level inter-observer variation. The aim of this study is to evaluate the agreement of pain assessment using the CMPS-SF between veterinary students, veterinary nurses, veterinary surgeons, and European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia (ECVAA) diplomates.
