Gross Anatomy of the Equine Masseter Muscle: Lamination and Intramuscular Course of the N. Massetericus.

Anat Histol Embryol

November 2024

Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Institute of Veterinary-Anatomy, -Histology and -Embryology, Justus-Liebig-University Giessen, Giessen, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • The masticatory muscles of horses have an asymmetrical arrangement, with four muscles on the inside of the jaw compared to one major muscle, the masseter, on the outside.
  • Recent research suggests that the masseter muscle has a complex structure similar to multiple individual muscles, influencing its functional diversity during chewing movements.
  • Dissection of eight horse heads and evaluation of 29 skulls revealed nine distinct muscular layers within the masseter, separated by tendon plates, which could help inform future studies on the biomechanics of horse chewing.

October 2024

Department of Veterinary Medicine, Post-Graduate Specialization School in Food Inspection "G. Tiecco", University of Teramo, Strada Provinciale 18, 64100 Teramo, Italy.

Among the different naked and quasi-enveloped viruses, the hepatitis A virus (HAV), hepatitis E virus (HEV), and norovirus genogroups I and II (NoV GI and NoV GII) are considered the main microbiological noxae involved in foodborne outbreaks. Mussels can harbor pathogens in their tissues. In addition to epidemiological attention, marine water temperature changes are considered a crucial variable influencing viral loads.

Antibacterial Effects of Thermosonication Technology on Strains Identified from Swine Food Chain: An In Vitro Study.

Foods

October 2024

Department of Veterinary Medicine, Post-Graduate Specialization School in Food Inspection "G. Tiecco", University of Teramo, Strada Provinciale 18, 64100 Teramo, Italy.

Among innovative food technologies, ultrasounds have demonstrated physical damages (provided by frequency and intensity factors) on bacterial structures while determining the microbiological stabilization of many foodstuffs. This study tested the efficacy of the thermosonication process on 16 strains belonging to the academic biobank (isolated from swine slaughterhouses). All strains were exposed to focused ultrasounds, generated by the Waveco system (Milan, Italy), with the following settings: 40 KHz coupled with 80 W at different 5 min intervals starting from 5 to 15 ones, and focusing on two different temperatures: 40 °C and 50 °C.

Article Synopsis
  • HEV (Hepatitis E Virus) enters hosts mainly through the orofecal route, raising health concerns, especially when transmitted via animal products like milk.
  • In a study, 220 raw ovine milk samples were collected from sheep in three provinces of Abruzzo, Italy, to check for HEV RNA presence.
  • The findings revealed that 2.27% of samples tested positive for HEV RNA fragments, marking the first detection of HEV in ovine raw milk in Italy, with notable presence in specific herds.

  • Toceranib phosphate is an approved treatment for canine mast cell tumors, but its long-term effectiveness for canine hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma (HSTCL) has not been previously reported.
  • A 10-year-old dog presented with weight loss and other symptoms, leading to the discovery of HSTCL through various tests and surgeries, including a splenectomy and liver biopsy.
  • After starting toceranib treatment, the dog's liver enzyme levels decreased and it remained in good condition, demonstrating that toceranib may be a viable treatment option for HSTCL in dogs, with the dog surviving for 460 days post-treatment.

Effects of Pirimiphos-Methyl on Non-Target Invertebrates.

Biology (Basel)

October 2024

Department of Zoology and Ecology, Faculty of Biology and Ecology, Oles Honchar Dnipro National University, Gagarin Av. 72, 49010 Dnipro, Ukraine.

The effects of pirimiphos-methyl have previously been assessed on blood-sucking insect species, pollinating insects, and target crop pest species. The sensitivity of non-target zoophagous and saprophage species to this insecticide remains largely unstudied. In laboratory conditions, we assessed the susceptibility of 43 species of invertebrates to pirimiphos-methyl.

This case report describes the diagnosis, management and the short- and long-term outcomes of a dog with paraprostatic cysts and associated perineal herniation. A 9-year-old male entire Bearded Collie was referred for a caudal abdominal mass and right perineal hernia noted on routine examination. Computed Tomography (CT) imaging of the abdomen demonstrated a large bilobed fluid filled structure adjacent to the prostate, extending into the peritoneal cavity and the right perineal space, causing perineal herniation and partial obstruction of the right ureter.

Craniomandibular osteopathy (CMO) is a proliferative, self-limiting, non-neoplastic disease of growing dogs characterised by excessive new bone formation on the skull and mandible. The radiographic findings of CMO are well described; however, limited reports of the computed tomographic (CT) appearance are available. This paper aims to characterise the spectrum of CT findings that can occur with CMO.

Background: Peripheral nodal B-cell lymphomas (PNBCL) represent the most common presentation of lymphomas in dogs. Multiagent CHOP (C = cyclophosphamide, H = hydroxydaunorubicin [Doxorubicin], O = Oncovin, P = prednisolone)-based chemotherapy protocols have been widely accepted as gold standard 1st-line treatment. CHOP-25 and CHOP-19 are most commonly prescribed but have never been directly compared.
