Article Synopsis
  • Canine leishmaniasis (CanL), caused by Leishmania infantum, is a common disease in Algeria, prompting a study on how veterinarians in Skikda and Constantine manage and understand it.
  • A survey with 139 veterinary clinics revealed a high prevalence of CanL, similar symptoms, and a reliance on serological techniques for diagnosis, but also indicated euthanasia is the main treatment strategy.
  • The study highlighted a lack of education among veterinarians on zoonotic disease prevention, suggesting a need for standardized, evidence-based practices to improve CanL management in Algeria.

Decreasing speed and stride length over successive races have been shown to be associated with musculoskeletal injury (MSI) in racehorses, demonstrating the potential for early detection of MSI through longitudinal monitoring of changes in stride characteristics. A machine learning (ML) approach for early detection of MSI, enforced rest, and retirement events using this same horse-level, race-level, and stride characteristic data across all race sectionals was investigated. A CatBoost model using features from the two races prior to an event had the highest classification performance (sensitivity score for MSI, enforced rest and retirement equal to 0.

Animal Welfare Program, Faculty of Land and Food Systems, The University of British Columbia, 2357 Main Mall, Vancouver, BC V6T 1Z6, Canada. Electronic address:

Early life killing of male and female dairy calves not needed as replacements for the lactating herd poses a threat to the social sustainability of the dairy industry. However, implementing sustainable alternatives to this common practice is a complex challenge exhibiting many characteristics of a 'wicked problem'. Addressing these problems requires understanding the needs of a wide range of actors including farmers, their advisors, beef and dairy value chain stakeholders, the public, and the animals.

Hyperfibrinolysis in a dog with strongyloidiasis.

J Small Anim Pract

November 2024

Langford Vets, Small Animal Referral Hospital, Langford, UK.

Article Synopsis
  • A female dog from Eastern Europe faced severe bleeding during an elective surgery due to a strongyloidiasis infection, which was initially undiagnosed.
  • Despite normal examination results and blood tests, the testing revealed hyperfibrinolysis, an abnormal breakdown of blood clots, linked to this infection.
  • Treatment with ivermectin resolved the bleeding issue, marking a unique case of transient hyperfibrinolysis specifically caused by Strongyloides stercoralis in dogs, suggesting it as a rare cause of this condition when other common causes have been ruled out.

Canine Heartworm Disease, caused by Dirofilaria immitis, primarily affects canids and felids. The earliest studies on cryopreservation were carried out at -70°C, achieving acceptable survival rates, however microfilariae (mf) showed alterations both in morphology and motility. Thereafter, liquid nitrogen was used representing an excellent tool for long-term preservation, albeit it is expensive and requires trained personnel.

Anal Bioanal Chem

January 2025

Messina Institute of Technology c/o Department of Chemical, Biological, Pharmaceutical and Environmental Sciences, Former Veterinary School, University of Messina, Viale G. Palatucci snc, 98168, Messina, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • The study utilized Rapid Evaporative Ionization Mass Spectrometry (REIMS) along with chemometric analysis to differentiate between benign and malignant canine mammary tumors (CMTs), achieving high accuracy in tumor identification.
  • Results indicated a significant increase in phospholipid synthesis in malignant tumors compared to normal mammary tissues, highlighting specific phospholipid species as key indicators of carcinogenesis.
  • The research also uncovered a link between cancer and inflammation through the dysregulation of fatty acid metabolism, suggesting that understanding these metabolic changes could enhance diagnostic and treatment strategies for tumors.

Article Synopsis
  • * In a study of nestling eagle owls, ARs were found in 91.5% of blood samples, with many individuals showing multiple AR compounds, primarily second-generation ARs (SGARs).
  • * While the overall health of the sampled owls appeared good, there was a positive but not significant correlation between AR levels and prothrombin time; higher AR concentrations were linked to urban areas and landfills, indicating a need for better monitoring of these pollutants.

Invasive bone tumors pose a significant healthcare challenge, often requiring systemic chemotherapy and limb salvage surgery. However, these strategies are hampered by severe side effects, complex post-resection bone defects, and high local recurrence rates. To address this, we developed dual-functional bone substitute biomaterials by functionalizing commercially available bone substitute granules (Bio-Oss® and MBCP®+) with the established anticancer agent cisplatin.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated how geography affects the cloacal microbiota of two Australian freshwater turtle species, Chelodina longicollis and Emydura macquarii, based on the anthropogenic impact of their environments.
  • Using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, the researchers assessed the microbiota composition, structure, and diversity in 93 turtles from five different locations.
  • Results indicated that C. longicollis from disturbed areas had lower microbial diversity compared to those from less affected environments, while E. macquarii showed consistent microbiota across locations, highlighting the impact of environmental factors on microbial communities.

Background: Antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) initiatives are imperative to safeguard antimicrobials and reduce resistance. Across the UK, AMS relies in part on the self-regulation of the veterinary profession, particularly in farm animal practice, alongside voluntary schemes and quality assurance systems. In Europe, AMS initiatives are often statutory and require responsibility from several sectors.

Preparation and characterization of aptamer-based sorbent for the selective extraction of zearalenone and its derivatives from human urine.

Anal Bioanal Chem

January 2025

Department of Analytical, Bioanalytical Sciences, and Miniaturization (LSABM), UMR 8231 Chemistry, Biology and Innovation (CBI), ESPCI Paris, PSL University, Paris, France.

The aim of this work is the development of a biomimetic strategy involving a molecular recognition mechanism using aptamers immobilized on a solid support for the analysis of the mycotoxin zearalenone (ZEA) and two of its derivatives in human urine: alpha-zearelenol (α-ZEL) and beta-zearelenol (β-ZEL). Three oligonucleotide sequences reported in the literature as being specific to ZEA were thus covalently grafted onto activated sepharose, and a thorough study of the percolation and washing conditions was performed to promote the selective retention of the three targeted compounds. With the optimized extraction procedure, a strong and selective retention was obtained for ZEA and to a lesser extent α-ZEL and β-ZEL, with extraction recoveries of 88±9%, 77±15%, and 45±12% respectively, in standard solutions.

  • Silicon in restructured meat (RM) demonstrated antidiabetic and cholesterol-lowering effects in a rat model for type 2 diabetes (T2DM), promoting better bile acid and cholesterol metabolism.
  • Consumption of silicon-RM reduced the bile acid pool and improved intestinal barrier integrity by increasing occludin levels, suggesting a protective effect against fat digestion damage.
  • The study proposes that incorporating silicon into meat products could serve as a potential nutritional therapy for managing diabetic dyslipidemia.

Background: Ticks are ectoparasites and can be vectors of a wide range of pathogens, posing significant health risks to livestock. In the Sahara Desert of Algeria, particularly among one-humped camels (), there is a need to better understand the factors influencing tick infestation patterns to improve livestock management and health outcomes.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence, intensity, and abundance of hard-bodied ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) among dromedaries, examining both intrinsic factors (sex, age, coat color) and extrinsic variables (farming systems, vegetation types, climate zones, and elevation) that might influence tick infestation in this region.
