Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on the use of plasma transfusions in 85 anaesthetized dogs, analyzing when and why plasma was administered, along with monitoring for adverse events and human errors during transfusion processes.
  • The primary reasons for plasma transfusion included sepsis (58% of dogs) and perianaesthetic hypotension, particularly with 39% of dogs experiencing hypotension as the sole trigger for the transfusion.
  • Despite a common practice of bolusing plasma rather than following recommended slow rates, no transfusion reactions were clearly identified, indicating potential masking effects due to anaesthesia in critically ill dogs.

Article Synopsis
  • This study assessed the diagnostic value and cost-effectiveness of using the i-STAT® point-of-care analyzer for measuring cardiac troponin I (cTnI) levels in dogs and cats suspected of heart disease.
  • A total of 240 animals (120 dogs and 120 cats) were examined, comparing the results from i-STAT® with two established laboratory assays (IMMULITE® 2000 and ACCESS®).
  • While the i-STAT® method effectively differentiated normal and elevated cTnI levels, caution is advised when interpreting high cTnI values, as there is a notable bias compared to traditional assays, particularly important for diagnosing severe cardiac conditions like myocarditis or acute ischemia.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined 30 cases of gastrointestinal pneumatosis (GP) in dogs and cats, noting that the most affected areas were the stomach, colon, and small intestine.
  • The majority of cases were related to gastrointestinal diseases, with common issues including gastric dilatation and hemorrhagic diarrhea, particularly in dogs receiving certain medications.
  • Of the cases, 54% of medically managed animals survived, while surgical intervention only led to survival in 20% of cases, indicating that GP is often linked to other underlying conditions rather than being a standalone issue.

  • Metabolic/neurodegenerative encephalopathies cover various conditions in dogs and cats that have similar MRI features, complicating accurate diagnosis and often requiring multiple tests.
  • This study aimed to analyze MRI characteristics, classify conditions based on gray and white matter involvement, and compare findings with existing literature, involving 100 cases (81 dogs and 19 cats).
  • Notable findings included unusual MRI patterns, such as cerebellar nuclei changes in hepatic encephalopathy and specific white matter involvement in myelinolysis, along with unique effects of thiamine deficiency on various brain structures.

Pacemaker-twiddler's syndrome in a seven-year-old male domestic shorthaired cat.

J Vet Cardiol

August 2024

The Ralph Veterinary Referral Centre, Marlow, Buckinghamshire, UK; Specialist Veterinary Cardiology Consultancy, Four Marks, Hampshire, UK.

Article Synopsis
  • A seven-year-old neutered male cat received a permanent epicardial pacemaker after being diagnosed with intermittent second and third degree atrioventricular block, which caused seizure-like episodes.
  • One year post-surgery, the cat began to experience near-syncopal episodes, prompting an investigation into the pacemaker's functionality.
  • The investigation revealed a twisted lead due to the pulse generator rotating, a condition referred to as 'twiddler syndrome,' and this is reported as the first occurrence of this syndrome in a cat.

Ocular biometry in rabbits using computed tomography.

Vet Ophthalmol

November 2024

Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, Hospital for Small Animals, The University of Edinburgh, Midlothian, UK.

Objective: To describe a repeatable method of measuring ocular structures and to establish ocular biometry reference ranges in adult domestic rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) without medical history or imaging findings consistent with ophthalmic disease using a 64-slice multidetector computed tomography scanner.

Procedure: In this retrospective and observational anatomic study, 100 eyes from 50 rabbits without medical history or imaging findings consistent with ophthalmic disease who received a head computed tomography scan were selected for measurement of globe length, width, and height using 3D multiplanar reconstruction. Lens width and length, the anteroposterior length of the anterior and vitreous chambers, and attenuation of the lens and vitreous chamber were collected.
