Background: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) is caused by increased pulmonary venous pressure. Thrombosis, vascular remodeling, and vasoconstriction mediated by platelets could exacerbate PH.

Hypothesis: Dogs with PH will exhibit a hypercoagulable state, characterized by increased platelet activation, platelet-leukocyte, and platelet-neutrophil aggregate formation.

Evidence of intrathecally-derived antibodies against Toxoplasma gondii in horses suspected of neurological disease consistent with equine protozoal myeloencephalitis.

Among the recognized neurologic diseases in horses, equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM) has been reported around the world and still presents challenges in diagnosis and treatment. Horses can present with clinical neurologic signs consistent with EPM while testing negative for the two main causative agents, Sarcocystis neurona or Neospora hughesi, and may still be clinically responsive to anti-parasitic drug therapy. This context led to our hypothesis that another protozoal parasite, Toxoplasma gondii, which is known to cause toxoplasmosis in other mammalian species, is a potential pathogen to cause neurologic disease in horses.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate and compare changes before and after intravenous (IV) and intramuscular (IM) administration of pethidine with midazolam in healthy cats.

CT findings and the prognostic value of the Koret CT score in cats with traumatic brain injury.

Objectives: The aims of this study were to evaluate associations between abnormal head CT findings and outcome, and to examine the prognostic value of the Koret CT score (KCTS) in cats sustaining acute traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Methods: The medical records of cats hospitalised with TBI that underwent head CT scans within 72 h of admission were retrospectively reviewed. CT scans were evaluated independently by a radiologist and a neurologist who were blinded to the outcome.

Molecular detection of Sarcocystis neurona in cerebrospinal fluid from 210 horses with suspected neurologic disease.

An ante-mortem diagnosis of equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM) is presently based on clinical presentation, immunodiagnostics performed on serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and ruling out other neurological disorders. Molecular techniques introduce a novel and promising approach for the detection of protozoal agents in CSF. Hypothesizing that real-time PCR (rtPCR) can be a useful complement to EPM diagnostics, 210 CSF samples from horses suspected of neurological disease with EPM included as a differential diagnosis were tested using rtPCR to detect Sarcocystis neurona DNA and immunodiagnostics targeting antibodies against the same pathogen, performed on serum and CSF samples.

The prognostic value of the Koret CT score in dogs following traumatic brain injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common condition in veterinary medicine with relatively high mortality rate. Recently, a study that correlated abnormal computed tomography (CT) findings with outcome in dogs with head trauma established a prognostic scoring system termed Koret CT score (KCTS). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of the KCTS in making short- and long-term prognosis in dogs presented within 72 h of TBI.

Canine malignant mammary gland tumors present with a poor prognosis due to metastasis to other organs, such as lung and lymph node metastases. Unlike in human studies where obesity has been shown to increase the risk of breast cancer, this has not been well studied in veterinary science. In our preliminary study, we discovered that leptin downregulated cathepsin A, which is responsible for lysosomal-associated membrane protein 2a () degradation.

Adaptations for amphibious vision in sea otters (Enhydra lutris): structural and functional observations.

Sea otters (Enhydra lutris) are amphibious mammals that maintain equal in-air and underwater visual acuity. However, their lens-based underwater accommodative mechanism presumably requires a small pupil that may limit sensitivity across light levels. In this study, we consider adaptations for amphibious living by assessing the tapetum lucidum, retina, and pupil dynamics in sea otters.

Recent human literature has reported T1w Fluid Attenuated Inversion Recovery's (FLAIR's), superiority to T1wTSE in relation to tissue contrast for grey-to-white matter (GM-WM) and lesion-to-WM, although conflicting results are reported concerning lesion detection.To the author's knowledge, T1wFLAIR has not been investigated in veterinary medicine.

One Health-One Education: Medical and Veterinary Inter-Professional Training.

Physicians and veterinarians are increasingly expected to collaborate across disciplines; however, in most cases their education and training remain isolated within their respective professions. Medical and veterinary students are rarely provided with opportunities for inter-professional learning during their coursework and clinical training. One Health serves as an ideal framework for developing problem-focused curricula that promote inter-professional teamwork.

Systemic Collyriclum faba (Trematoda: Collyriclidae) Infection in a Wild Common Raven ( Corvus corax ).

A hatch-year Common Raven ( Corvus corax ) with subcutaneous and internal pseudocysts, filled with fluid, containing a pair of adult trematodes and numerous eggs consistent with Collyriclum faba, died near a riverbank in California, US. While C. faba is incidental in many Passeriformes, this case was a fatal systemic infection.

Total laryngectomy for management of chronic aspiration pneumonia in a myopathic dog.

A 5-month-old female pit bull terrier dog evaluated for ataxia, progressive regurgitation, and recurrent aspiration pneumonia had markedly elevated creatine kinase activity, non-inflammatory generalized myopathy, and severe esophageal dysmotility. A narrow-field total laryngectomy was performed. The dog is doing well 30 months after surgery, and no longer has episodes of aspiration pneumonia, despite intermittent regurgitation.

Coinfection with Clostridium piliforme and Felid herpesvirus 1 in a kitten.

A 1-month-old Domestic Shorthair kitten was submitted for autopsy, with a history of upper respiratory tract infection and diarrhea. This was the third kitten from the same litter that had died with similar clinical findings within a period of 1 month. Severe conjunctivitis, rhinitis, tracheitis, and bronchointerstitial pneumonia were present, together with lymphohistiocytic colitis.
