Benzodiazepine receptor binding in vivo, as determined by the uptake of the high-affinity specific benzodiazepine receptor ligand [3H]Ro15-1788, was examined following acute and chronic defeat stress in male mice aged 6 weeks, 7 months and 1 year. Specific uptake in 6-week-old mice was increased from control values only in the cerebellum following acute but not chronic stress. Specific uptake in the cortex and hypothalamus was unchanged from control values following both acute and chronic stress.

A microsomal preparation from chondroitin 4-sulfate-synthesizing cultured mouse mastocytoma cells was incubated with UDP-[3H]GalNAc, UDP-GlcA, and 3'-phosphoadenylylphosphosulfate (PAPS) for 30 s at 10 degrees C and with UDP-[14C]GlcA, UDP-GalNAc, and PAPS for 4 h at 37 degrees C for synthesis of 3H- and 14C-labeled chondroitin/chondroitin sulfate. The latter incubation provided more than 100 times as much product as did the short incubation at 10 degrees C. Upon chromatography of the isolated labeled glycosaminoglycans on a Sepharose CL-6B column, most of the [14C]glycosaminoglycan from the 4 h, 37 degrees C incubation was excluded from the column, indicating that this nascent glycosaminoglycan had been polymerized fully.

The personality traits of introversion/extraversion and neuroticism were investigated as determinants of the utilization of restorative dental care, controlling for socioeconomic status and restorative need. The VA Dental Longitudinal Study (DLS) provided information on the restorative treatment received by 593 healthy adult males during a 10-year period. Utilization of restorative services was measured by calculating the percentage of surfaces that needed and received treatment, as identified by the DLS examiners by clinical and radiographic examination.

Normative Aging Study, Boston Veterans Administration Outpatient Clinic, Massachusetts.
We investigated the relationship between the personality traits of emotionality and extraversion and symptom-reporting, both cross-sectionally and longitudinally. The sample consisted of 1,034 men, initially screened for good health, who completed both the 16PF and at least two CMIs, (M = 5, range = 2-8) over an average period of 17 years (range = 2-25). Using a two-stage growth model, we obtained a predicted baseline and slope for each man for self-reported physical and psychological symptoms.

This article examines the commonly used laboratory indicators of heavy alcohol use (elevated MCV, GGTP and AST values) in subgroups of drug-using and non-drug-using alcoholic men admitted to an inpatient alcoholism treatment program. A total of 380 consecutive admissions meeting DSM-III diagnostic criteria for alcohol use or dependence were studied. Of these subjects, 75% used both alcohol and drugs.

Comparisons were made of the personality and social orientations of antisocial risk takers, defined as residents in a long-term drug-treatment facility (N = 24); adventurous risk takers, defined as rock climbers (N = 18); and prosocial risk takers, or heroes, defined as policemen and firemen decorated for bravery (N = 21). Measures included substance abuse proclivity, emotional arousability, conformity, moral reasoning, empathy, psychopathy, and sensation seeking. Discriminant analysis identified two functions that correctly classified 98.

Treatment of the monolayers with chondroitin ABC lyase and/or a preparation from Flavobacterium heparinum was used to remove chondroitin sulfate and/or heparan sulfate before staining, with resultant separate identification and partial localization of these glycosaminoglycans. When PF4-fluorescein was utilized with untreated control monolayers, fairly uniform reticular, perinuclear, and cell surface fluorescence was seen.

Nonspecific airway hyperresponsiveness and atopy have been postulated to be risk factors that predispose individuals to the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship of methacholine airway responsiveness and markers of atopy to rate of decline in lung function among 790 men, age 40 to 79 yr, followed in the Normative Aging Study. Airway responsiveness was assessed at the end of follow-up, which ranged from 14 to 24 yr.

Two experiments are reported in which the response of pigeons to perspective transformations of a pattern target was measured. In the first experiment an alphabet letter was taken as the pattern target (the 'positive') and the response to its perspective transforms was compared to the response to nontarget letters ('negatives') over the course of discrimination training. In the second experiment irregular quadrilaterals were used as positives and the responses to slight perspective deformations of the prototypes were compared to the responses to random transformations of the same magnitude under steady-state conditions.

Two separate acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis and/or asthma were treated in 22 patients in a double-blind crossover study. One course of treatment consisted of 750 mg of ciprofloxacin twice daily and the other of 500 mg of ampicillin four times a day; each drug was given for 14 days. Patients were observed initially, every three to four days during therapy, and weekly during the post-therapy period.

We have examined changes in proteoglycan synthesis by F9 embryonal carcinoma cells after the cells have been treated with retinoic acid or retinoic acid plus cholera toxin. Retinoic acid is known to stimulate the differentiation of this cell type to a primitive endoderm-like cell characterized by the production of basement membrane components such as type IV collagen, laminin and proteoglycans. We have now demonstrated that proteoglycan synthesis and secretion were further stimulated when cholera toxin was added in addition to retinoic acid.

The phenomenon of alcohol withdrawal has seldom been studied in subgroups of patients in withdrawal. We developed a rating scale for measuring alcohol withdrawal that we found to be reliable and valid. The scale, when applied to young (ages 21-33, N = 24) and elderly (ages 58-77, N = 26) groups of patients in alcohol withdrawal, indicated that the elderly group initially had a more severe withdrawal for which they received higher doses of chlordiazepoxide.

This study examines changes in drinking behaviors over an approximately 2-year span in two groups of community-dwelling men: 100 men who retired between baseline (T1) and follow-up (T2) and 316 men who remained employed. Measures were obtained from two drinking surveys conducted as part of a panel study of aging. Results indicate that the event of retirement was not a significant predictor of changes in average alcohol consumption, although retirees showed more variability between T1 and T2.

An experiment to identify the source of age-related inhibition by semantically related primes in a word-retrieval paradigm is reported. Stimuli were definitions of target words, and responses were names of the target words that were defined. It has been shown previously that in this paradigm older adults are differentially inhibited by semantically related primes (Bowles & Poon, 1985a).

Investigated whether emotionality, assessed in 1975, predicted the reporting of both objective stress (life events) and subjective stress (hassles) 10 years later, and how emotionality affected the relation between both objective and subjective stress and mental health. The sample consisted of 1,159 older men, participants in the Normative Aging Study. Path analysis revealed that the reporting of stress was confounded with personality: Individuals higher in emotionality reported both more life events and more hassles.

The potential relationship of an intact membrane organization for the synthesis of chondroitin and chondroitin 4-sulfate was examined after modification of a mouse mast cell microsomal system with the nonionic detergent, Triton X-100. The results indicated that Triton X-100 had no effect on the rate of polymerization but had a slight effect on the size of glycosaminoglycan chains. An "all or nothing" pattern of sulfation of newly formed chondroitin was obtained in both the presence and the absence of Triton X-100, and this pattern did not change whether sulfation was initiated concurrent with or subsequent to polymerization.
