Gut microbiota patterns associated with duration of diarrhea in children under five years of age in Ethiopia.

Diarrhea claims >500,000 lives annually among children under five years of age in low- and middle-income countries. Mortality due to acute diarrhea (<7 days' duration) is decreasing, but prolonged (7-13 days) and persistent (≥14 days of duration) diarrhea remains a massive challenge. Here, we use a case-control study to decipher if fecal gut microbiota compositional differences between Ethiopian children with acute (n=554) or prolonged/persistent (n=95) diarrhea and frequency-matched non-diarrheal controls (n=663) are linked to diarrheal etiology.

The Utility of Neuromuscular Assessment to Identify ADHD Among Patients with a Complex Symptom Picture.

Objective: Diagnostic assessment of ADHD is challenging due to comorbid psychopathologies and symptoms overlapping with other psychiatric disorders. In this study, we investigate if a distinct pattern of neuromuscular dysregulation previously reported in ADHD, can help identifying ADHD in psychiatric patients with diverse and complex symptoms.

Method: We explored the impact of neuromuscular dysregulation, as measured by The Motor Function Neurologic Assessment (MFNU), on the likelihood of being diagnosed with ADHD, affective disorder, anxiety disorder, or personality disorder among adults ( = 115) referred to a psychiatric outpatient clinic.

Review of Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose in Artificial Tears for the Treatment of Dry Eye Disease.

Dry eye disease (DED) is a highly prevalent condition, resulting in reduced quality of life, lower participation in social life and impaired work efficiency. Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) is a cellulose-based viscosity-enhancing agent and is one of the most popular therapeutic ingredients in artificial tears. This review aims to evaluate the literature on the efficacy and safety of HPMC used in the treatment of DED.

Ophthalmological screening guidelines for individuals with Osteogenesis Imperfecta: a scoping review.

Background: Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a connective tissue disorder in which the Type 1 collagen is defective. The eye is a structure rich in collagen Type 1 and is heavily impacted by the disease. Many vision-threatening eye diseases have been associated with OI.

Normative Scores on the Clock Drawing Test Among Older Adults from a Large Population Survey in Norway: The HUNT Study.

Background: The Clock Drawing Test (CDT) is used to screen for Alzheimer's disease and other dementia disorders. Normative scores on the version from the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) do not exist in the Nordic countries.

Objective: To examine the normative scores of the CDT among adults aged 70 years and older.

Geographic and socioeconomic variation in treatment of elderly prostate cancer patients in Norway - a national register-based study.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine geographic and socioeconomic variation in curative treatment and choice of treatment modality among elderly prostate cancer (PCa) patients.

Methods: This register-based cohort study included all Norwegian men ≥ 70 years when diagnosed with non-metastatic, high-risk PCa in 2011-2020 (n = 10 807). Individual data were obtained from the Cancer Registry of Norway, the Norwegian Prostate Cancer Registry, and Statistics Norway.

Sensitivity of classification criteria from time of diagnosis in an incident systemic lupus erythematosus cohort: a population-based study from Norway.

Objectives: To compare the sensitivity of 2019 European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology/American College of Rheumatology (EULAR/ACR) classification criteria against 1997 ACR criteria for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), for incident SLE cases in the presumably complete population-based Nor-SLE cohort from Southeast Norway (2.9 million inhabitants).

Methods: All cases International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) coded as SLE during 2000-2017 were individually reviewed.

It's not the task, it's the shifting exploring physicians' and leaders' perspectives on task shifting in emergency departments in Norway.

Background: Task shifting is an approach where specific tasks are transferred, when convenient, from health workers with high qualifications to health workers with less training and lower qualifications. This approach is mainly used to utilize the available human resources for health. Tasks that are traditionally linked to the physician role have increasingly been transferred to registered nurses during the last decade.

Multi-disciplinary team meetings for lung cancer in Norway and Denmark: results from national surveys and observations with MDT-MODe.

Background And Purpose: Multi-disciplinary Team (MDT) meetings are widely regarded as the 'gold standard' of lung cancer care. MDTs improve adherence to clinical guidelines for lung cancer patients. In this study, we describe and compare lung cancer MDTs in Denmark and Norway by combining national surveys and the MDT-Metric for the Observation of Decision-making (MDT-MODe) instrument.

Tailoring biopsy strategy in the MRI-fusion prostate biopsy era: systematic, targeted or neither?

Background: Magnetic  resonance imaging (MRI) followed by targeted biopsy (TBx) is utilized for prostate cancer (PCa) detection. However, the value of adding systematic biopsies (SBx) to targeted biopsy procedures (combined biopsy; CBx) in men with suspicious MRI findings has not been determined.

Methods: We analysed biopsy outcomes in 429 men with MRI lesions in the prospective multicenter STHLM3MRI pilot study, planned for prostate biopsy.

Association of normal body mass index and weight loss with long-term major cardiovascular events after PCI for myocardial infarction.

To investigate whether normal body mass index (BMI) shortly after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for myocardial infarction is associated with increased risk of long-term major cardiovascular events (MACE), and to explore potential clinical determinants of long-term weight loss (WL) after PCI. Single-center cohort study with 5-year follow-up of patients treated with PCI for myocardial infarction between 2016 and 2018. Categorical WL was defined as > 0 kg body weight reduction from baseline to end of follow-up.

Alterations in bile acid kinetics after bariatric surgery in patients with obesity with or without type 2 diabetes.

Background: Bariatric surgery is an effective treatment option for obesity and provides long-term weight loss and positive effects on metabolism, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Alterations in bile acid metabolism have been suggested as a potential contributing factor, but comprehensive studies in humans are lacking.

Methods: In this study, we analysed the postprandial responses of bile acids, C4 and FGF19 in plasma, and excretion of bile acids in faeces, before and after bariatric surgery in patients (n = 38; 74% females) with obesity with or without type 2 diabetes from the BARIA cohort.

The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Tele-ophthalmology-Based Retinal Screening.

Introduction: This study reports our experiences with systematic retinal screening in Denmark through optometrists with access to tele-ophthalmological services before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods: We evaluated an optometrist-based retinal screening system with a referral option for tele-ophthalmological service by a consultant ophthalmologist within the time period of August 1, 2018 to September 30, 2023. The optometrist collected patient history, refraction, best-corrected visual acuity, intraocular pressure, basic slit-lamp examination, 4-in-1 visual field report, and retinal imaging using color fundus 45° photography.

Chronic hepatitis B virus infection in Eastern Ethiopia: Clinical characteristics and determinants of cirrhosis.

Background: Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) virus infection is a major cause of liver-associated morbidity and mortality, particularly in low-income countries. A better understanding of the epidemiological, clinical, and virological characteristics of CHB will guide appropriate treatment strategies and improve the control and management of CHB in Ethiopia.

Aim: To investigate the characteristics of CHB in Eastern Ethiopia and assess the efficacy and safety of antiviral treatment.

Does botulinum neurotoxin A make walking easier in children with cerebral palsy? A randomized clinical trial.

Aim: To assess the effect of single botulinum neurotoxin A (BoNT-A) injections into the calf muscles on the gross energy cost of walking in children with cerebral palsy (CP) and to evaluate the effect of BoNT-A on walking capacity, physical activity, perceived changes in mobility, and pain.

Method: This was an industry-independent, randomized, quadruple-blind, placebo-controlled, multicentre trial (ClinicalTrials.gov registration: NCT02546999).

A genome-wide association meta-analysis of all-cause and vascular dementia.

Introduction: Dementia is a multifactorial disease with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VaD) pathologies making the largest contributions. Yet, most genome-wide association studies (GWAS) focus on AD.

Methods: We conducted a GWAS of all-cause dementia (ACD) and examined the genetic overlap with VaD.

Female Reproductive Factors and Risk of Mild Cognitive Impairment and Dementia: The HUNT Study.

Background: More women are living with dementia than men worldwide and there is a need to investigate causes for this female preponderance. While reproductive factors have been investigated as risk factors, the results are conflicting. We aim to clarify this using a large cohort with a long observation time, adjusting for multiple health and lifestyle variables and encompassing a wider range of cognitive impairment.

Implementation of a digital behavior change intervention (eCHANGE) for weight loss maintenance support: a service design and technology transfer approach.

Obesity is a chronic disease, and while weight loss is achievable, long-term weight loss maintenance is difficult and relapse common for people living with obesity. Aiming to meet the need for innovative approaches, digital behavior change interventions show promise in supporting health behavior change to maintain weight after initial weight loss. Implementation of such interventions should however be part of the design and development processes from project initiation to facilitate uptake and impact.

Daily physical activity in older adults across levels of care: the HUNT Trondheim 70 + study.

Background: Physical activity (PA) is imperative for healthy ageing and is a modifiable lifestyle factor. Accurate, clinically meaningful estimates of daily PA among older adults can inform targeted interventions to maintain function and independence. This study describes daily PA in older adults across levels of care as a first step contributing to the limited evidence on potential associations between PA and the use of care services.

Clinically feasible automated MRI volumetry of the brain as a prognostic marker in subjective and mild cognitive impairment.

Background/aims: The number of patients suffering from cognitive decline and dementia increases, and new possible treatments are being developed. Thus, the need for time efficient and cost-effective methods to facilitate an early diagnosis and prediction of future cognitive decline in patients with early cognitive symptoms is becoming increasingly important. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether an MRI based software, NeuroQuant® (NQ), producing volumetry of the hippocampus and whole brain volume (WBV) could predict: (1) conversion from subjective cognitive decline (SCD) at baseline to mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia at follow-up, and from MCI at baseline to dementia at follow-up and (2) progression of cognitive and functional decline defined as an annual increase in the Clinical Dementia Rating Scale Sum of Boxes (CDR-SB) score.
