Hyperkalemia and the Use of New Potassium Binders a Single Center Experience from Vestfold Norway (The PotBind Study).

Purpose: Hyperkalemia is a common metabolic complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and is associated with several serious adverse events. We aimed to treat/prevent hyperkalemia using the new of potassium-binders, allowing maintained renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors (RAASi) treatment in proteinuric CKD and/or congestive heart failure (CHF) patients.

Patients And Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study in long-term users of potassium binders for chronic hyperkalemia.

Body mass index in nursing home residents during the first year after admission.

Background: Malnutrition - comprising both undernutrition and overweight - has to be addressed in the medical follow-up of older adults due to the negative consequences for the functional state and general health. Still, little is known about the nutritional state of nursing home (NH) residents, especially with respect to weight gain or weight loss after NH admission. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate changes in the body mass index (BMI) during the first year following NH admission, and to explore demographic and clinical characteristics related to BMI changes.

Effect of Godelieve Denys-Struyf (GDS) muscle and articulation chain treatment on clinical variables of patients with chronic low back pain and lumbar disc degeneration: a pilot feasibility randomized controlled trial.

Background: Patients with chronic low back pain (LBP) and lumbar disc degeneration are recommended to try out nonsurgical treatment options before surgery. There is need for good nonsurgical alternatives that can be adapted to the patient's needs and level of function. The aim of this pilot trial was to test study feasibility of a future full randomized controlled trial (RCT) evaluating the feasibility and benefit of the physiotherapy-based Godelieve Denys-Struyf (GDS) muscle and articulation chain treatment for patients with chronic LBP and lumbar disc degeneration referred to surgical assessment in a hospital outpatient clinic.

Association between oral metformin use and the risk of age-related macular degeneration: A systematic review with meta-analysis.

Rodent studies demonstrate that oral metformin use may reduce chronic low-grade inflammation, downregulate apoptosis and extend life span. Emerging epidemiological evidence suggests that oral metformin use may protect against development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in humans. In this study, we systematically reviewed the literature on the association between oral metformin use and AMD in patients with type 2 diabetes and conducted a quantitative meta-analysis to provide a summary estimate of the association.

The Geriatric Prognostic Index: a clinical prediction model for survival of older diffuse large B-cell lymphoma patients treated with standard immunochemotherapy.

The International prognostic Index (IPI) is the most widely used clinical prediction model for diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) patients treated with rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine and prednisone (R-CHOP), but may be suboptimal in older patients. We aimed to develop and externally validate a clinical prediction model for older, RCHOP- treated DLBCL patients by examining geriatric assessment and lymphoma-related parameters in real-world cohorts. A population-based training set of 365 R-CHOP-treated DLBCL patients ≥70 years was identified through the Cancer Registry of Norway.

Subjective age and the association with intrinsic capacity, functional ability, and health among older adults in Norway.

This study investigates the relationships between subjective age, intrinsic capacity, functional ability and health among Norwegians aged 60 years and older. The Norwegian Survey of Health and Ageing (NORSE) is a population-based, cross-sectional study of home-dwelling individuals aged 60-96 years in the former county of Oppland. Age- and sex-adjusted regression models were used to investigate the gap between subjective and chronological age and this gap's association with self-reported and objectively measured intrinsic capacity (covering all six sub domains defined by WHO), health, and functional ability among 817 NORSE participants.

Normative Scores on the Norwegian Version of the Mini-Mental State Examination.

Background: The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), a simple test for measuring global cognitive function, is frequently used to evaluate cognition in older adults. To decide whether a score on the test indicates a significant deviation from the mean score, normative scores should be defined. Moreover, because the test may vary depending on its translation and cultural differences, normative scores should be established for national versions of the MMSE.

Mobility and associations with levels of cerebrospinal fluid amyloid β and tau in a memory clinic cohort.

Background: Mobility impairments, in terms of gait and balance, are common in persons with dementia. To explore this relationship further, we examined the associations between mobility and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) core biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we included 64 participants [two with subjective cognitive decline (SCD), 13 with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and 49 with dementia] from a memory clinic.

Background: The randomized Oseberg study compared the effects of sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), on the 1-y remission of type 2 diabetes and β-cell function (primary outcomes). However, little is known about the comparable effects of SG and RYGB on the changes in dietary intakes, eating behavior, and gastrointestinal discomfort.

Objectives: To compare 1-y changes in intakes of macro- and micronutrients, food groups, food tolerance, hedonic hunger, binge eating, and gastrointestinal symptoms after SG and RYGB.

Clinical expressions, characteristics and treatments of confirmed COVID-19 in nursing home residents: a systematic review.

Background: The coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to a high rate of infections, frequent outbreaks, and high mortality rates in nursing homes (NH) worldwide. To protect and improve the treatment and care of the vulnerable NH population, it is pivotal to systematise and synthesise data from cases of COVID-19 among NH residents. In our systematic review, we therefore aimed to describe the clinical expressions, characteristics, and treatments of NH residents confirmed to have COVID-19.

Neuropsychological and Symptom Predictors of Diagnostic Persistence in ADHD: A 25-Year Follow-up Study.

Background: This study extends long-term predictive research on ADHD by including both neuropsychological and symptom measures at baseline in adolescence as predictors of diagnostic persistence 25 years later.

Methods: Nineteen males with ADHD and 26 healthy controls (HC; M/F = 13/13), were assessed in adolescence and 25 years later. Measurements at baseline included a comprehensive test battery measuring eight neuropsychological domains, an IQ estimate, the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), and the Global Assessment Scale of Symptoms.

Diagnostic Accuracy of the Amsler Grid Test for Detecting Neovascular Age-Related Macular Degeneration: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Importance: Patients with nonneovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD) are encouraged to use the Amsler grid test for self-assessment to facilitate early diagnosis. The test is widely recommended, suggesting a belief that it signals worsening AMD, warranting its use in home monitoring.

Objective: To systematically review studies of the diagnostic test accuracy of the Amsler grid in the diagnosis of neovascular AMD and to perform diagnostic test accuracy meta-analyses.

The relation of energy cost of walking with gait deviation, asymmetry, and lower limb muscle co-activation in children with cerebral palsy: a retrospective cross-sectional study.

Background: Compared to typically developing children, children with cerebral palsy (CP) have increased energy expenditure during walking, limiting activity and participation. Insight into whether the also deviating and more asymmetric gait with increased muscle co-activation contributes to this increased energy expenditure is important for clinical decision making. The aim of this study was to investigate the relation between energy cost of walking with gait deviation, asymmetry, and muscle co-activation in children with CP.

Living with chronic headaches: A qualitative study from an outpatient pain clinic in Norway.

Background: Although headache is considered a frequently experienced type of pain, the challenges, experiences, and perceptions of people suffering from chronic headaches are poorly understood. The aim of this study was to gain subjective information regarding these aspects in daily life, in order to answer the research question "What is life like with a chronic headache?"

Methodology: Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with 16 patients who suffered from chronic headaches. Five main domains were explored: emotions related to headaches; trauma/stressful events; behavioural changes, relationships, and coping mechanisms.

Treatment Outcomes of Older Participants in a Randomized Trial Comparing Two Schedules of Twice-Daily Thoracic Radiotherapy in Limited-Stage SCLC.

Introduction: Half of the patients with limited-stage SCLC (LS SCLC) are above or equal to 70 years old, but they account for less than 20% of participants in most trials. Comorbidities and reduced organ and physical function might lead to more treatment toxicity, and population-based studies indicate that fewer older than younger patients with LS SCLC receive standard chemoradiotherapy, although there is limited evidence for such a policy.

Methods: We compared baseline characteristics, comorbidity, survival, treatment completion, toxicity, health-related quality of life, and treatment outcomes between patients above or equal to 70 years old and those younger than 70 years old in an open-label, randomized phase II trial comparing twice-daily thoracic radiotherapy of 45 Gy in 30 fractions with 60 Gy in 40 fractions in LS SCLC.

A Piglet Perinatal Asphyxia Model to Study Cardiac Injury and Hemodynamics after Cardiac Arrest, Resuscitation, and the Return of Spontaneous Circulation.

Neonatal piglets have been extensively used as translational models for perinatal asphyxia. In 2007, we adapted a well-established piglet asphyxia model by introducing cardiac arrest. This enabled us to study the impact of severe asphyxia on key outcomes, including the time taken for the return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC), as well as the effect of chest compressions according to alternative protocols for cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

The work-related burden of dry eye.

Purpose: To investigate the relationship between dry eye disease (DED) and work functioning, unemployment, absenteeism, and worry about job loss.

Methods: DED and unemployment, absenteeism, and 'worry about job loss' were assessed in 71,067 subjects (18-65 years, 60% female) from the Dutch population-based Lifelines cohort using the Women's Health study questionnaire and single-item questions, respectively. Work functioning was assessed in 32,475 participants using the Work role functioning questionnaire 2.

Insomnia and risk of dementia in a large population-based study with 11-year follow-up: The HUNT study.

Despite evidence suggesting that insomnia is associated with the risk of dementia and cognitive dysfunction, studies have shown mixed results. Dementia has a long prodromal phase, and studies with long follow-up are required to avoid reverse causality. In our 11-year follow-up study, we assessed whether probable insomnia disorder (PID) based on diagnostic criteria, and insomnia symptoms were associated with risk of all-cause dementia, Alzheimer's disease (AD) and cognition, measured with the Montreal Cognitive Assessment scale.
