Over the last years, the susceptibility activity of the most common microorganisms causing community-acquired infections has significantly changed in Spain. Based on the susceptibility rates of Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella pneumoniae collected from outpatients aged 15 or older with symptoms of respiratory or urinary tract infections in several Microbiology Departments in Catalonia in 2021, penicillin V should be first choice for most respiratory tract infections, amoxicillin and clavulanate for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbations and a single dose of fosfomycin or a short-course nitrofurantoin should remain first-line treatments for uncomplicated urinary tract infections. Updated information on antimicrobial resistance for general practitioners is crucial for achieving appropriate empirical management of the most common infections by promoting more rational antibiotic use.

Article Synopsis
  • Birth asphyxia is a leading cause of mortality and disability in children globally, with long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) presenting potential targets for new treatments due to their regulatory functions.
  • A study using piglets examined key lncRNAs involved in oxidative stress and related processes, dividing 42 newborn subjects across four experimental conditions including varying reoxygenation methods after hypoxia.
  • Results showed that exposure to hypoxia significantly affected lncRNA transcription levels, suggesting that these molecules play a crucial role in the brain's response to damage from perinatal asphyxia and could lead to future therapeutic strategies.

Hungry for compliments? Ghrelin is not associated with neural responses to social rewards or their pleasantness.

Front Psychiatry

April 2023

Department of Behavioural Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, University of Oslo, Oslo, Norway.

The stomach-derived hormone ghrelin motivates food search and stimulates food consumption, with highest plasma concentrations before a meal and lowest shortly after. However, ghrelin also appears to affect the value of non-food rewards such as interaction with rat conspecifics, and monetary rewards in humans. The present pre-registered study investigated how nutritional state and ghrelin concentrations are related to the subjective and neural responses to social and non-social rewards.
