The persistence of low human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) replication in individuals undergoing antiretroviral therapy (ART) still threatens their health. Previous findings have shown that microRNAs (miRNAs) could interfere with several steps of the viral life cycle. Herein, we set out to investigate the expression of miR-150, miR-223, miR-382, miR-324-5p, miR-33a-5p, miR-34a, and miR-132 in the whole peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) population from people living with HIV-1 showing different levels of viral suppression.

Organization and Activity of Italian Echocardiographic Laboratories: A Survey of the Italian Society of Echocardiography and Cardiovascular Imaging.

Background: The Italian Society of Echocardiography and Cardiovascular Imaging (SIECVI) conducted a national survey to understand better how different echocardiographic modalities are used and accessed in Italy.

Methods: We analyzed echocardiography laboratory activities over a month (November 2022). Data were retrieved via an electronic survey based on a structured questionnaire, uploaded on the SIECVI website.

Liver and heart failure: an ultrasound relationship.

Liver and heart are anatomically and patho-physiologically related. In heart failure (HF) the increased right atrial pressure and volume overload cause histological changes in hepatocytes, leading to a condition known as "congestive hepatopathy" (CH), with consequent variations in liver functioning and ultrasound (US) findings. CH has specifical US findings especially regarding venous vessels aspect, easily detecting by gray-scale study, but many others can be distinguished by Doppler analysis.

Analysis of viral nucleic acids in duodenal biopsies from adult patients with celiac disease.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the presence of Adenovirus, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), HHV-6 and cytomegalovirus (CMV) nucleic acids in the gastrointestinal biopsies from active CD patients.

Methods: Gastrointestinal biopsies of 40 active CD patients and 40 non-CD patients were collected during the endoscopic investigation of gastrointestinal symptoms.

Clinical characteristics, management and outcome of patients with invasive candidiasis hospitalized in Internal Medicine Units: findings from a registry by the Italian Scientific Society FADOI.

Purpose: Invasive candidiasis (IC) is a challenging clinical condition, burdened by relevant mortality and morbidity. There is limited knowledge on the occurrence and management of IC in Internal Medicine Units (IMUs). Aim of this study was to provide real-world data on this topic.

Legislative proposal in Italy to facilitate contacts between deceased organ donor families and transplant recipients.

Contacts between organ donors and recipients might be possible in the near future in Italy. As suggested by The Italian Committee of Bioethics "anonymity is requested by the Italian National Transplant Centre" before transplantation anonymity shall be strict in order to grant privacy, gratuity, justice, solidarity and benefits and avoids organ trafficking. Following a period that is ethically correct and justifiable, organ donor families and recipients can meet after signing a valid declaration of consent, expressed on a template valid for the whole country.

Early prediction of resistance to tyrosine kinase inhibitors by plasma monitoring of mutations in NSCLC: a new algorithm for patient selection and personalized treatment.

In Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) patients treated with Tyrosine Kinase-Inhibitors (TKIs) therapy, the emergence of acquired resistance can be investigated by plasma monitoring of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA). A series of 116 patients with -positive lung adenocarcinomas were treated with first/second generation TKIs. At clinical progression, 64 (55%) T790M plasma positive patients were subjected to second line-treatment with osimertinib and strictly monitored during the first month of therapy.

Prulifloxacin vs Levofloxacin for Exacerbation of COPD after Failure of Other Antibiotics.

The chronic course and evolution of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is often characterized by periods of exacerbation of symptoms, which have a negative impact on the quality of life of patients, as well as on the evolution of COPD, and represent a significant cause of medical intervention and hospitalization. Very few data are available on the efficacy of rescue antibiotics in patients with acute exacerbation of COPD (AECOPD) unresponsive to previous treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of two fluoroquinolones in AECOPD previously treated without success.

Colonic sarcoidosis: unusual onset of a systemic disease.

Sarcoidosis is a multisystem chronic inflammatory condition of unknown etiology that has the potential to involve every tissue in the body. Sarcoidosis in the gastrointestinal system, and particularly the colon, is very rare. Here, we report the case of a 57-year-old man with no previous diagnosis of sarcoidosis who presented with new onset of abdominal pain and constipation.

ORAl iMmunosuppressive therapy to prevent in-Stent rEstenosiS (RAMSES) cooperation: a patient-level meta-analysis of randomized trials.

Objective: The role of oral immunosuppressive therapy (OIT) to prevent restenosis after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and stenting is still controversial. This study evaluates the impact of oral administration of prednisone or sirolimus to prevent restenosis.

Methods: We conducted a meta-analysis of trials in which PCI-patients were randomized to bare metal stents (BMS) plus OIT (BMS + OIT group) versus BMS or drug-eluting stents alone (BMS/DES group).

A case report of HCC cutaneous metastasis.

Introduction: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common solid tumors in the world. HCC muscle and cutaneous metastases are rare and can occur by hematogenous spread or following surgical procedures performed for diagnostic or therapeutic aims.

Case Study: We present a 47-year-old man underwent liver biopsy followed by surgical resection for moderately differentiated HCC in January 1999.

Acinic cell carcinoma of the breast arising in microglandular adenosis.

Acinic cell carcinoma is a rare breast tumour belonging to salivary gland-like tumours of the breast. They are "triple-negative" breast cancers even if their biological behaviour seems to be more favourable. Herein we present an acinic cell carcinoma arising on a background of typical and atypical microglandular adenosis in a 58-year-old woman, along with a review of the literature.

Standard laparoscopic versus single-incision laparoscopic colectomy for cancer: early results of a randomized prospective study.

Background: Standard laparoscopic colectomy (SLC) for cancer is a safe, feasible, and oncologically effective procedure with better short-term and similar long-term results of open colectomy. Conversely, owing to technical difficulties in colonic resection and full mesenteric dissection, single-incision laparoscopic colectomy (SILC) has been considered unsuitable for oncologic purposes. We compared the technical feasibility and early clinical outcomes of SLC and SILC for cancer.

Totally laparoscopic total and subtotal gastrectomy with extended lymph node dissection for early and advanced gastric cancer: early and long-term results of a 100-patient series.

Background: Controversies exist about feasibility and oncologic effectiveness of laparoscopic gastrectomies with extended lymphadenectomy for advanced gastric cancer. The aim of our study was to determine if long-term results of these laparoscopic procedures may justify their use as an alternative to open surgery also in advanced gastric cancer.

Methods: We performed a retrospective review of 100 patients after laparoscopic surgery for gastric cancer.
