In the last 20 years, demographic development in Bulgaria has been characterized by population decline, a low crude birth rate, a low fertility rate, a high mortality rate and an ageing population. A stabilizing political situation since the early 2000s and an economic upsurge since the mid-2000s were important factors in the slight increase of the birth and fertility rates and the slight decrease in standardized death rates. In general, Bulgaria lags behind European Union (EU) averages in most mortality and morbidity indicators.

Objective: The aims of the study were: (1) to perform a complex angiogenic assessment in chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) patients using multiple parameters: bone marrow microvessel density (MVD), bone marrow immunohistochemical cellular expressions of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptor KDR, as well as hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and its receptor MET, and the plasma VEGF and HGF; and (2) to determine the clinical significance of these factors for patients with CML.

Material And Methods: The VEGF and HGF plasma levels were analysed by ELISA in 38 newly diagnosed CML patients. Immunohistochemical methods were used to visualize the MVD as well as the cellular VEGF/KDR and HGF/MET expression.

We performed transient global cerebral ischemia on adult macaque monkeys by reversibly stopping blood flow to the brain. We labeled de novo-generated cells in postischemic animals as well as in sham-operated controls by infusing the DNA synthesis indicator BrdU, and subsequently investigated the distribution and phenotype of BrdU-labeled cells in several telencephalic regions at various time-points after ischemia. The ischemic insult significantly increased the number of proliferating cells in the hippocampus, SVZ, neocortex, and striatum, but had no such effect in PHR.

The water phase antioxidant activity of extracts from 23 Bulgarian medicinal plants was studied in relation to their polyphenol content in comparison with mate, black tea, honeybush and rooibos foreign species. Antioxidant activity was measured by the ABTS (2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)) cation radical decolorization assay, and the total polyphenol content was assayed according to the Folin-Ciocalteu method. Five Bulgarian plant extracts exhibited higher antioxidant activity than that of mate, which is 21.

An increasing number of researchers of the metabolic syndrome assume that many mechanisms are involved in its complex pathophysiology such as an increased sympathetic activity, disorders of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis, the action of chronic subclinical infections, proinflammatory cytokines, and the effect of adipocytokines or psychoemotional stress. An increasing body of scientific research in this field confirms the role of the neurotrophins and mastocytes in the pathogenesis of inflammatory and immune diseases. Recently it has been proved that neurotrophins and mastocytes have metabotrophic effects and take part in the carbohydrate and lipid metabolism.
