From indoors to outdoors: Impact of waste anesthetic gases on occupationally exposed professionals and related environmental hazards - A narrative review and update.

Environ Toxicol Pharmacol

January 2025

São Paulo State University (UNESP), Medical School, Division of Anesthesiology, GENOTOX Lab., Botucatu, São Paulo, Brazil. Electronic address:

Waste anesthetic gases (WAGs) are trace-concentration inhaled anesthetics that exist worldwide because they are released into the ambient air of operating rooms (ORs) and post-anesthesia care units. WAGs cause indoor contamination, especially in ORs lacking proper scavenging systems, and occupational exposure, while promoting climate change through greenhouse gas/ozone-depleting effects. Despite these controversial features, WAGs continue to pose occupational health hazards.

Article Synopsis
  • The extended translabyrinthine approach to acoustic neuroma (AN) enhances visualization and access to larger tumors by expanding dural exposure while preserving cranial nerve function.
  • This modification, called the extra-extended translabyrinthine approach, improves safety and visibility by allowing for better mobilization of the temporal lobe and comprehensive exposure of the tumor and nerves, including the facial and glossopharyngeal nerves.
  • A detailed video demonstrates this technique in treating a large left AN, showing successful tumor resection without compromising cranial nerve function.

Purpose: This interlaboratory comparison was conducted to evaluate the performance of the Latin-American Biodosimetry Network (LBDNet) in analyzing digitized images for scoring dicentric chromosomes from irradiated blood samples. The exercise also assessed the use of weighted robust algorithms to compensate the uneven expertise among the participating laboratories.

Methods: Three sets of coded images obtained through the dicentric chromosome assay from blood samples irradiated at 1.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored sleep disorders in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), focusing on hypersomnia, fatigue, risk of apnea, and restless legs syndrome.
  • Conducted in Brazil from 2017 to 2020, it included 60 patients and found that a significant portion had poor sleep quality and excessive sleepiness, but a low risk for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
  • The research concluded that while MS and NMOSD patients experience sleep issues, the frequency of restless legs syndrome is similar to that found in the general population, with no significant correlation to clinical factors like relapses or disability status.

  • The way nurses put tubes into patients for kidney treatment is really important for the patient's health.
  • Choosing the best method is tricky and depends on things like the patient's needs and the nurses' skills.
  • There are seven key points nurses can use to help them pick the right method for each patient.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the major pathogen for cervical lesions. The evasion mechanism of the immune response and persistence of HPV infection can be influenced by polymorphisms (SNPs) in genes associated with transporter associated with antigen processing (TAP), which may change the peptide binding affinity or the TAP expression impacting the efficiency of peptide transport in the secretory pathway, and the presentation of peptides to cytotoxic T lymphocytes. This study aimed to evaluate the role of the and polymorphisms, , and genes expressions, and protein levels in cervical cells presenting different degrees of pre-cancerous lesions in 296 immunocompetent women infected or not by HPV.

Background: Gastritis is a superficial and prevalent inflammatory lesion that is considered a public health concern once can cause gastric ulcers and gastric cancer, especially when associated with Helicobacter pylori infection. Proton pump inhibitors, such as omeprazole, are the most widely used drugs to treat this illness. The aim of the study was evaluate cytogenetic effects of omeprazole in stomach epithelial cells of patients with gastritis in presence and absence of H.

Purpose: We sought to systematically review the literature on the use of botulinum toxin (BTX-A) injections in the bladder to treat overactive bladder (OAB) in men.

Materials And Methods: A systematic review was performed to identify clinical trials on efficacy and safety of BTX-A injections in the detrusor for treatment of OAB in men published from inception to October 2020. Quality assessment was performed using the Cochrane Collaboration's tool for assessing risk of bias and study characteristics were extracted by two reviewers independently.

Introduction: Hemodialysis (HD) patients should be trained to develop self-care behaviors in order to prevent and preserve their arteriovenous fistula (AVF). The aim of this study was identifying the factors that affect the levels of self-care behavior with AVF by HD patients.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 89 patients.

Background: The length of hospital stays of patients undergoing orthognathic surgery depends on related local and systemic factors. Hematological changes resulting from orthognathic surgery, followed up in the postoperative period until hospital discharge, have neither yet been established for specific cases, nor for normal situations. This study aimed to describe the hemodynamic parameters of patients undergoing orthognathic surgery, considering a prediction of hospital discharge.

The high-risk oncogenic human papillomavirus (HPV) has developed mechanisms for evasion of the immune system, favoring the persistence of the infection. The chronic inflammation further contributes to the progression of tissue injury to cervical cancer. The programmed cell death protein (PD-1) after contacting with its ligands (PD-L1 and PD-L2) exerts an inhibitory effect on the cellular immune response, maintaining the balance between activation, tolerance, and immune cell-dependent lesion.

The prevalence of allergic rhinitis (AR), including symptoms of sneezing, nasal itching, airflow obstruction, and nasal discharge caused by histamine and immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated reactions, is ~30% in the U.S. Recent studies seem to suggest that the allergic inflammatory processes in AR may be induced by the interaction between an allergen (trigger) and the nasal microbiome (substrate).

The challenges encountered in performing minimally invasive approaches, such as supraorbital minicraniotomy (SOMC), in services without adequate equipment are rarely reported in the literature. This study analyzes the viability of SOMC in the treatment of cerebral aneurysms, using exactly the same resources as pterional craniotomy (PC). The results of these two techniques are compared.

Background: Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are relevant in developing countries where frequencies can be at least 3 times higher than in developed countries. The purpose of this research was to describe the intervention implemented in intensive care units (ICUs) to reduce HAIs through collaborative project and analyze the variation over 18 months in the incidence density (ID) of the three main HAIs: ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP), central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) and catheter-related urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) and also the length of stay and mortality in these ICUs.

Methods: A quasi-experimental study in five public adult clinical-surgical ICUs, to reduce HAIs, through interventions using the BTS-IHI "Improvement Model", during 18 months.
