Article Synopsis
  • Premature menopause (PM) occurs when ovulation ends before age 40, which is linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease.
  • The study aimed to explore how genetic variations related to PM impact the risk of cardio-metabolic disorders among women in the MASHAD cohort study.
  • Results indicated that women with specific genetic polymorphisms (rs4806660 CC and rs2303369 TT) had significantly increased risks for metabolic syndrome and obesity, respectively.

Uric acid is associated with type 2 diabetes: data mining approaches.

Diabetol Int

July 2024

International UNESCO Center for Health-Related Basic Sciences and Human Nutrition, Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Mashhad, 99199-91766 Iran.

Background: Several blood biomarkers have been related to the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D); however, their predictive value has seldom been assessed using data mining algorithms.

Methods: This cohort study was conducted on 9704 participants recruited from the Mashhad Stroke and Heart Atherosclerotic disorders (MASHAD) study from 2010 to 2020. Individuals who were not between the ages of 35 and 65 were excluded.

Background: Acylcarnitine is one of the crucial markers of fatty acid metabolism, and examination of their level in infants can reveal several Inherited Metabolic Disorders (IDM) or Inborn errors of Metabolism (IEM). Because of the great importance of hereditary, metabolic, and other inherited disorders early diagnosis before the appearance of clinical symptoms, this study was carried out to establish a reference range for carnitine analytes and to identify acylcarnitine profiles in normal weight neonatal dried blood spots (DBS) specimens.

Methods: By using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) for neonatal screening and eventually the examination and analysis of LC-MS/MS results, 34 acylcarnitine derivatives were identified.

Neurokinin receptors are a family of G protein-coupled receptors that were first identified in the central and peripheral nervous systems. However these receptors were later found in other types of cells, therefore, new perspectives concerning their novel roles were described. Mammalian has three neurokinin receptors, among which neurokinin-1 receptors [NK1R] have been indicated to be involved in most, if not all, intracellular functions, primarily the regulation of cell proliferation.

Background: Patients' missed appointments can cause interference in the functions of the clinics and the visit of other patients. One of the most effective strategies to solve the problem of no-show rate is the use of an open access scheduling system (OA). This systematic review was conducted with the aim of investigating the impact of OA on the rate of no-show of patients in outpatient clinics.

The effectiveness of immunotherapy for most cancer patients remains low, with approximately 10-30% of those treated surviving. Thus, much effort is being put into finding new ways to improve immune checkpoint therapy. Our review concludes that inhibition of proprotein convertase subtilisin/Kexin type 9 (PCSK9), which plays a critical role in regulating cholesterol metabolism, can cause movement of T cells toward tumors, with increased sensitivity to immune checkpoint therapies.

This article presents a novel approach to treating prostate cancer using a nanocarrier composed of folic acid (FA), β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), and magnetic graphene oxide (MGO) as a theranostic agent. The carrier is designed to improve the solubility and bioavailability of curcumin, a potential therapeutic substance against prostate cancer. Folic acid receptors overexpressed on the surface of solid tumors, including prostate cancer, may facilitate targeted drug delivery to tumor cells while avoiding nonspecific effects on healthy tissues.

We aimed to investigate the simultaneous effects of meloxicam and rifampin nanoformulations with solid lipid nanoparticle (SLN) and nanostructured lipid carrier (NLC) substrates on inhibiting the quorum-sensing system of and preventing biofilm formation by this bacterium. Antimicrobial activity of rifampin and meloxicam encapsulated with SLNs and NLCs against PAO1 was assessed by disk diffusion, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). The SLN formulation was associated with lower doses for the MIC and minimum bactericidal concentration in comparison to NLC.

Substance P (SP), an important neuropeptide, has a crucial role in the progression of several cancers, including prostate cancer, through interacting with the neurokinin-1 receptor (NK1R). Oxidative stress is also involved in the onset and progression of prostate cancer. However, no studies have been performed on the cross-talk between the SP/NK1R system and cellular redox balance in prostate cancer, and how it is involved in tumorogenesis.
