We show that many ideal observer models used to decode neural activity can be generalized to a conceptually and analytically simple form. This enables us to study the statistical properties of this class of ideal observer models in a unified manner. We consider in detail the problem of estimating the performance of this class of models.

The upstream glucokinase (GK) promoter is expressed specifically in several different neural/neuroendocrine (NE) cell types, including the pancreatic beta-cell and pituitary corticotrope. Previously, a mutational and evolutionary analysis of this promoter identified two identical 9-bp motifs (TGGTCACCA) termed Pal-1 and Pal-2 that are essential for high level expression in HIT M2.2.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFSteel factor (SF) and LIF (leukemia inhibitory factor) synergistically promote the proliferation and survival of mouse primordial germ cells (PGCs), but only for a limited time period in culture. We show here that addition of bFGF to cultures in the presence of membrane-associated SF and LIF enhances the growth of PGCs and allows their continued proliferation beyond the time when they normally stop dividing in vivo. They form colonies of densely packed, alkaline phosphatase-positive, SSEA-1-positive cells resembling undifferentiated embryonic stem (ES) cells in morphology.
