Article Synopsis
  • Lung cancer is a significant issue for patients with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), but there is limited research on those with non-IPF Pulmonary Fibrosis (PF); this study compares the two groups in terms of characteristics and survival.
  • The study analyzed data from 251 patients diagnosed with lung cancer between 2010 and 2022, finding that most were elderly men with a high smoking rate, and differing patterns of lung imaging between the two groups.
  • Both IPF-LC and non-IPF PF-LC patients had high 5-year mortality rates around 64%, with the shortest survival noted in non-IPF PF patients with unclassified PF.

Anat Histol Embryol

January 2025

Department of Veterinary Anatomy, Graduate School of Educational Sciences, Ondokuz Mayis University, Samsun, Turkey.

The aim of this study was to perform three-dimensional reconstruction of the metatarsal and phalangeal bones using computed tomography, to obtain osteometric data and to determine biometric differences in terms of sexual dimorphism in the obtained measurements in Van cats, an endemic species living in the Van province region of eastern Türkiye and named after this region. Computed tomography images of a total of 16 adult and healthy Van cats, eight females and eight males, were used in the study. Three-dimensional modelling of the images and osteometric measurements were obtained using MIMICS 20.

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of submucosal 8 mg (2 mL) dexamethasone (DEX) on postoperative pain, swelling, chewing efficiency, trismus, healing, and discomfort after periodontal flap surgery (PFS).

Methods: In this randomized controlled split-mouth study, 25 patients underwent PFS in the mandible, whereby postoperative, submucosal DEX was injected to the surgical field to the test group and submucosal normal saline was applied to the control group. Pain was evaluated using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and the 101-point numeric rate scale in the first 8 h after PFS and on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 7th days, whereas swelling, chewing efficiency, trismus, healing, discomfort and analgesic consumption were evaluated preoperatively on the 1st, 2nd and 7th days.

Evaluation of the toxicity potential of exercise and atorvastatin/metformin combination therapy on STZ-diabetic rats.

Naunyn Schmiedebergs Arch Pharmacol

December 2024

Department of Pharmaceutical Toxicology, Faculty of Pharmacy, Ege University, Izmir, Türkiye.

Exercise is recommended for individuals with diabetes, and metformin and atorvastatin are commonly prescribed to diabetic patients. However, these two drugs have potential effects that may lead to toxicity in the skeletal muscle system. Therefore, the effects and potential interactions of combining these two drugs on skeletal muscle performance and structure were investigated in vivo in an experimental diabetes model.

The negative effects of global warming also directly affect aquatic populations. Consequences such as evaporation due to chronic temperature increase, increase in salinity, and increase in stock density per unit volume are potential stress factors. While creating the trial design, an attempt was made to simulate the effects of global warming, especially on species living in salty and brackish water biotopes.

Blackberry deteriorates rapidly after harvest due to its sensitive structure, limiting their storage time to about a week and resulting in significant economic losses. The study was conducted to determine the effects of salicylic acid applications on postharvest fruit quality in blackberries, the harvested fruit was immersed in salicylic acid solutions prepared at concentrations of 0.5, 1, and 1.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers developed a highly sensitive electrochemical biosensor for cancer diagnosis, combining a nanocomposite of MIL-156 MOF@COF with gold (Au) nanoparticles to detect the CA15-3 biomarker.
  • The biosensor features a core-shell structure that enhances surface area and conductivity, allowing for effective antibody bonding and improved electrochemical signal amplification.
  • Differential pulse voltammetry was employed to demonstrate the biosensor's linear response in CA15-3 detection, successfully distinguishing between breast cancer patients and healthy individuals using serum samples.

BACKGROUND During the COVID-19 pandemic, strict feeding restrictions were implemented in many dialysis centers to minimize transmission between patients. This study aims to evaluate the effects of these feeding restrictions on dry weight, intradialytic hypotension (IDH), and dialysis adequacy in hemodialysis patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS In this retrospective single-center study involving 76 hemodialysis patients, data from 2 consecutive 6-month periods were analyzed: the first before the COVID-19 pandemic when intradialytic nutrition was supported, and the second during the pandemic when intradialytic nutrition was restricted.

Article Synopsis
  • Dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) is essential for managing acute and chronic coronary syndromes, helping to lower mortality rates and prevent further complications.
  • A study followed 1500 patients on a specific fixed-dose DAPT (ASA + clopidogrel) to evaluate its effectiveness and safety, primarily focusing on hospitalization and bleeding risks.
  • Results indicated that the fixed-dose combination therapy was effective, with low rates of hospitalization for cardiovascular issues and minimal bleeding complications in appropriately selected patients.

Background: Medication management is a critical aspect of nursing, in particular with respect to paediatric patients, in whom medication errors are prevalent. Enhancing competence in this area requires not only general nursing skills but also targeted educational interventions and emotional support. This study aims to examine the relationship between nursing students' levels of liking children and their self-efficacy in paediatric medication administration, thereby exploring the impact of emotional factors on clinical competence.

Background And Hypothesis: Schizophrenia is a complex disorder thought to have neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative aspects. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) measurements of schizophrenia patients revealed that the retinal layers of these patients were thinner than those of healthy controls. This study aimed to examine retinal changes in first-episode psychosis patients treated with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) via OCT.

Mitochondrial respiratory chain dysfunction and impaired oxidative phosphorylation are rare but significant causes of mitochondrial diseases in children, presenting with diverse clinical features. Combined oxidative phosphorylation deficiency type 23 (COXPD23), an autosomal recessive disorder due to GTPBP3 gene mutations, typically manifests as lactic acidosis, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and encephalopathy. This case report describes a male infant born at 35 weeks gestation, who exhibited severe lactic aciduria and hypotonia but no cardiomyopathy, which is atypical for COXPD23.
