The continuous stream of multisensory information between the brain and the body during body-environment interactions is crucial to maintain the updated representation of the perceived dimensions of body parts (metric body representation) and the space around the body (the peripersonal space). Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) plays a crucial role in the management of gastroduodenal diseases by allowing a direct and accurate evaluation of the mucosa and the execution of several operative maneuvers. Despite a constant development of new imaging tools and operative devices, the widespread use of EGD has not resulted in a significant reduction of mortality for patients affected by esophageal/gastric cancer during the last three decades in Western countries. Evidence indicates that this disheartening scenario derives from a high variability of execution of EGD which determines its quality and diagnostic yield, delaying the diagnosis of neoplastic diseases.

Introduction: Anemia is a common complication of gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, with a prevalence up to 60% in celiac disease (CeD) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most prevalent form of anemia in these conditions, but chronic inflammation and vitamin B12 deficiency represent other common contributing mechanisms, especially in IBD.

Areas Covered: We discuss the pathogenesis of anemia in various medical GI disorders, the sometime problematic distinction between IDA, anemia of inflammation (AI) and the association of the two, and therapeutic and preventive measures that can be useful for the management of anemia in GI disorders.

Acute myeloid leukemia is a malignant disorder of the bone marrow, characterized by differentiation, clonal expansion, and uncontrolled proliferation of malignant myeloid progenitor cells and by several molecular and genetic abnormalities. A mutation of FMS-like tyrosine kinase 3 gene can be observed in about one-third of cases of acute myeloid leukemia. Two FLT3 inhibitors are actually approved for FLT3 mutated acute myeloid leukemia: midostaurin, a multikinase first generation inhibitor with lower affinity for FLT3 binding, and gilteritinib fumarate, a potent second-generation inhibitor of both FLT3-ITD and TKD.
