Background: There is a paucity of literature on manufacturer mismatch in reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA). It is unclear if use of different implant manufacturers for the glenoid side and the humeral side influences patient outcomes in primary RSA. We hypothesize that patients undergoing primary RSA with manufacturer mismatch such that humeral and glenoid components are from different manufacturers will not experience adverse outcomes when compared to a cohort of patients with humeral and glenoid components from the same manufacturer.

Background: Biomechanical muscle properties, such as stiffness, can be valuable indicators of tissue health and show promise as a diagnostic and treatment measure for chronic low back pain (CLBP). The development of accessible assessment technologies, such as the MyotonPRO portable device, allows for the convenient quantification of muscle tone and stiffness changes. The aim of this study is to assess the reliability of lumbar erector spinae muscle stiffness with the MyotonPRO in healthy adults and to compare stiffness changes between prone and sitting position.

New methods for producing surfaces with suitable biocompatible properties are desirable due to increasing demands for biomedical devices. Stainless steel 316 L and cp- titanium specimens were coated with thin films of alumina and hafnia deposited using the atomic layer deposition method at two temperatures, 180 and 260 °C. The morphology of the films was analysed using scanning electron microscopy, and their surface energies were determined based on drop contact angle measurements.

(1) Background: Analyses of retrieved inserts allow for a better understanding of TKA failure mechanisms and the detection of factors that cause increased wear. The purpose of this implant retrieval study was to identify whether insert volumetric wear significantly differs among groups of common causes of total knee arthroplasty failure, whether there is a characteristic wear distribution pattern for a common cause of failure, and whether nominal insert size and component size ratio (femur-to-insert) influence linear and volumetric wear rates. (2) Methods: We digitally reconstructed 59 retrieved single-model cruciate-retaining inserts and computed their articular load-bearing surface wear utilizing an optical scanner and computer-aided design models as references.

This prospective study aimed to determine the impact of Fascial Manipulation by Stecco (FM) on the range of motion (ROM) of internal rotation (IR) and horizontal adduction (HADD) in asymptomatic handball players, representing significant risk factors for shoulder injuries. A randomized controlled trial was conducted, with participants randomly assigned to either the investigated group ( = 29) receiving a single session of FM or the control group ( = 27) receiving no treatment. The ROM for IR and HADD were measured before, immediately after, and one month after the FM session.

Vertebral haemangiomas are common amongst primary benign tumours of the spine, usually asymptomatic and discovered incidentally, whereby symptomatic cases are rare. Aggressive vertebral haemangiomas, occurring even less frequently, are characterized by their expansion, resulting in pain and neural compression symptoms. Depending on presentation and severity, several treatment options exist, and when causing progressive neurological deficit, surgical decompression and resection is warranted.

The detection of cryoglobulins (CG) used to diagnose cryoglobulinemic vasculitis requires strict adherence to protocol, with emphasis on the preanalytical part. Our main objectives were to introduce a more sensitive and specific protocol for the detection of CG and to characterize CG in Slovenian patients diagnosed with cryoglobulinemic vasculitis, other vasculitides, connective tissue diseases or non-rheumatic diseases examined at the Department of Rheumatology (University Medical Centre Ljubljana). Samples were routinely analyzed for the presence of CG with the protocol using the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent.

The presence of broken surgical blades or other surgically uncontrolled sharp and pointed objects in the disc space is a rare but potentially severe complication of posterior lumbar spine procedures. Herein, we report the case of a 59-year-old female patient with a history of lumbar decompression and interspinous process device implantation who underwent an instrumented revision of the lumbosacral junction. During the L5-S1 discectomy, the scalpel blade broke, and the broken fragment could not be retrieved through the posterior approach.

Purpose: To identify clinical and laboratory predictors for low- and high-grade prosthetic joint infection (PJI) within the first postoperative days following primary total hip/knee arthroplasty (THA/TKA).
Methods: Institutional bone and joint infection registry of a single osteoarticular infection referral centre was reviewed to identify all osteoarticular infections treated between 2011 and 2021. Among them were 152 consecutive PJI (63 acute high-grade PJI, 57 chronic high-grade PJI, and 32 low-grade PJI) who also had primary THA/TKA performed at the same institution, which were retrospectively analyzed with multivariate logistic regression and covariables.

Ten percent of patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) require revision surgery. One of the reasons for THA are wear particles released from the implants that can activate the immune defense and cause osteolysis and failure of the joint implant. The discrepancies between reports on toxicity and immunogenicity of the implant materials led us to this study in which we compared toxicity and immunogenicity of well-defined nanoparticles from AlO, zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA), and cobalt chrome (CoCr), a human THP-1 macrophage cell line, human PBMCs, and therefrom-derived primary macrophages.
