A fundamental question in dinosaur evolution is how they adapted to long-term climatic shifts during the Mesozoic and when they developed environmentally independent, avian-style acclimatization, becoming endothermic. The ability of warm-blooded dinosaurs to flourish in harsher environments, including cold, high-latitude regions, raises intriguing questions about the origins of key innovations shared with modern birds, indicating that the development of homeothermy (keeping constant body temperature) and endothermy (generating body heat) played a crucial role in their ecological diversification. Despite substantial evidence across scientific disciplines (anatomy, reproduction, energetics, biomechanics, osteohistology, palaeobiogeography, geochemistry, and soft tissues), a consensus on dinosaur thermophysiology remains elusive.

The transition from a humid green Sahara to today's hyperarid conditions in northern Africa ~5.5 thousand years ago shows the dramatic environmental change to which human societies were exposed and had to adapt to. In this work, we show that in the 620,000-year environmental record from the Chew Bahir basin in the southern Ethiopian Rift, with its decadal resolution, this one thousand year long transition is particularly well documented, along with 20-80 year long droughts, recurring every ~160 years, as possible early warnings.

Combination Immunotherapy with Vaccine and Oncolytic HSV Virotherapy Is Time Dependent.

Oncolytic virotherapy or immunovirotherapy is a strategy that utilizes viruses to selectively infect and kill tumor cells while also stimulating an immune response against the tumor. Early clinical trials in both pediatric and adult patients using oncolytic herpes simplex viruses (oHSV) have demonstrated safety and promising efficacy; however, combinatorial strategies designed to enhance oncolysis while also promoting durable T-cell responses for sustaining disease remission are likely required. We hypothesized that combining the direct tumor cell killing and innate immune stimulation by oHSV with a vaccine that promotes T cell-mediated immunity may lead to more durable tumor regression.

We demonstrate the application of a recurrent neural network (RNN) to perform multistep and multivariate time-series performance predictions for stirred and static mixers as exemplars of complex multiphase systems. We employ two network architectures in this study, fitted with either long short-term memory and gated recurrent unit cells, which are trained on high-fidelity, three-dimensional, computational fluid dynamics simulations of the mixer performance, in the presence and absence of surfactants, in terms of drop size distributions and interfacial areas as a function of system parameters; these include physicochemical properties, mixer geometry, and operating conditions. Our results demonstrate that while it is possible to train RNNs with a single fully connected layer more efficiently than with an encoder-decoder structure, the latter is shown to be more capable of learning long-term dynamics underlying dispersion metrics.
