Implantable peripheral nerve electrodes are crucial for monitoring health and alleviating symptoms of chronic diseases. Advanced compliant electrodes have been developed because of their biomechanical compatibility. However, these mechanically tissue-like electrodes suffer from unmanageable operating forces, leading to high risks of nerve injury and fragile electrode-tissue interfaces.

Stroke induces cardiac dysfunction, which increases poststroke mortality and morbidity. An imbalance in the autonomic nervous system resulting from brain injury may serve as the underlying mechanism. The present study investigated whether transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) attenuates poststroke cardiac dysfunction by activating the parasympathetic nervous system.

The kidney and brain share strain vessels, which are short and small arterioles that branch out of larger arteries. These vessels are vulnerable to risk factors such as atherosclerosis, old age, hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and smoking. The nervous system and the kidneys interact to maintain homeostasis.

Background: Invasive vagus nerve stimulation (iVNS) is approved for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD). The limited understanding of its underlying mechanisms, however, hinders stratification and the prediction of treatment response. Given the strong projections of the afferent vagal nucleus to brain regions involved in emotional processing, we tested whether acute transauricular VNS (taVNS) can improve emotional processing that is a core deficit in MDD.

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has garnered significant attention as a promising bioelectronic therapy. In recent years, respiratory-gated auricular vagal afferent nerve stimulation (RAVANS), a novel non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation technique, has emerged. RAVANS integrates respiration with transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) and shares a similar mechanism of action to traditional VNS.

Objectives: A supraclavicular insertion approach for vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) may permit a wider range of VNS settings compared to traditional insertion techniques due to increased anatomic distance between VNS leads and the recurrent laryngeal nerve. Beyond potential technical advantages, this approach could offer greater cosmetic satisfaction for patients. However, the safety and efficacy of the supraclavicular approach is uncertain.

Objectives: This study introduces EMPATIC (Electro-Modulation of PAncreaTic Islet Cells), a miniaturized intraneural device designed for transversal insertion into small nerves with a mean diameter of 400 μm. EMPATIC aims to modulate glucose tolerance through intraneural vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) in rats.
Materials And Methods: EMPATIC design was optimized to fit into the cervical vagus nerve of rats and was developd through thin film microtechnologies.

Objective: The mechanisms of actions of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) are still unclear, however the activity of the cholinergic system seems to be critical for the induction of VNS-mediated plasticity. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a well-suited, non-invasive tool to investigate cortical microcircuits involving different neurotransmitters. Herein, we evaluated the effect of taVNS on short-latency afferent inhibition (SAI), a TMS paradigm specifically measuring cholinergic neurotransmission.

Introduction: Pairing vagus nerve stimulation with traditional rehabilitation therapies results in improved motor recovery in people with stroke. However, this approach has not yet been studied in people with spinal cord injury (SCI). Motor recovery continues to be challenging after SCI, and there is a need for innovative research strategies to enhance motor recovery after SCI.

Non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) represents a transformative approach for managing a broad spectrum of inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease. This comprehensive review delineates the mechanisms underlying VNS, emphasizing the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway, and explores interactions within the neuro-immune and vagus-gut axes based on both clinical outcomes and pre-clinical models. Clinical applications have confirmed the efficacy of VNS in managing specific autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, and chronic inflammatory conditions like inflammatory bowel disease, showcasing the variability in stimulation parameters and patient responses.

Better understanding of and addressing umbilical entanglement in the third trimester of pregnancy is necessary to estimate its impact on fetal circulation. An analysis of single physiological pregnancies wrapped with one or two coils of the umbilical cord around the neck makes it possible to understand the severity of the problem and distinguish it from perinatal umbilical strangulation. In an echocardiographic study performed at 32.

Objective: The aim of our study was to report the national trends of Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) and Laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) and compare their outcomes in patients with medically refractory epilepsy (RE).
Methods: Nationwide Inpatient Sample database (NIS, 1998-2018) was used to extract the data using the ICD-9/10 codes. Adult patients (>18 years) with a primary diagnosis of RE who underwent either VNS or LITT were included.

Introduction: Individuals with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) often present with refractory epilepsy and may be undergoing treatment with vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) to control seizures. Surveillance magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is necessary to monitor for the renal angiomyolipomas associated with TSC; however, MRI of the abdomen is not approved for patients withVNS therapy. We have many TSC patients with refractory epilelpsy who benefitted from VNS therapy, so we developed an MRI protocol that allows MRI of the abdomen to be performed in these patients to permit safe imaging of their kidneys.

The vagus nerve is a crucial component of the parasympathetic nervous system, facilitating communication between the brain and various organs, including the ears, heart, lungs, pancreas, spleen, and gastrointestinal tract. The caudal nucleus of the solitary tract in the brainstem is the initial site regulated by the vagus nerve in brain-body communication, including the interactions with immune system. Increasing evidence suggests that the gut-brain axis, via the vagus nerve, may play a role in the development and progression of psychiatric, neurologic, and inflammation-related disorders.
