Background: Although extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is an effective technique for life support, the incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) during ECMO support remains high. Dexmedetomidine (DEX), which has been widely used for sedation during ECMO, possesses several properties that help reduce the occurrence of AKI. This study aimed to investigate the protective effect of DEX on kidney function during ECMO.

Background: Although complex anatomical liver resections are more often being performed laparoscopically, the short-term outcomes following laparoscopic anatomical liver resection (LALR), its optimal indications, and limitations remain unclear. This study aimed to clarify the indications for and limitations of LALR by assessing the short-term outcomes.
Methods: This retrospective study included 233 patients who underwent LALR.

Objectives: This study aims to investigate the prognostic value of Temporal Muscle Thickness (TMT) in Chinese patients with newly diagnosed isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) wild-type glioblastoma.
Methods: Data were retrospectively collected from patients with isocitrate dehydrogenase wild-type genotype glioblastoma, who underwent surgical treatment and concurrent chemoradiotherapy at our center between May 2019 and May 2023. Multi-model and multivariate Cox regression were used to examine factors associated with overall and progression-free survival.

Oxyntic gland adenomas (OGAs) are benign gastric neoplasms composed of gland-forming epithelial cells with predominantly chief cell differentiation resembling oxyntic glands confined to the mucosa. If the tumor has submucosal invasion, it should be classified as gastric adenocarcinoma of fundic gland type. The OGAs can pose a diagnostic challenge, as they can resemble aggressive gastric neoplasms.

Background: While limited data on the impact of implementing guidelines in airway management on outcomes exist, there is a consensus that the implementation and the adherence to guidelines enhance patient safety. Recently, the Swiss Society for Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine (SSAPM) endorsed the guidelines of The Fondation Latine des Voies Aériennes (FLAVA) as the official guidelines for airway management in Switzerland. This study aimed to determine current practice of airway management in Switzerland.

L-transposition of the great arteries (L-TGA) represents a spectrum of congenital heart defects (CHD) associated with atrioventricular block (AVB). However, the incidence and prognosis of postoperative AVB among patients with variants of L-TGA is uncertain. Assess the incidence and risk factors for postoperative AVB requiring permanent pacemaker (PPM) implantation for pediatric patients with L-TGA undergoing cardiac surgery.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a frequently observed condition, with about 70% of individuals diagnosed with ADHD experiencing irregular sleep-wake patterns. Beyond the primary symptoms of ADHD, there is a significant overlap with sleep-related issues, indicating that disrupted sleep patterns may exacerbate ADHD symptoms. ADHD-related sleep problems can be traced to a delayed circadian rhythm and a later onset of melatonin production.

Introduction: When a first anti-CGRP monoclonal antibody (anti-CGRP mAb) fails, switching to a different anti-CGRP mAb is an option often considered, despite this approach is not yet systemically studied.
Methods: We present the findings of a systematic review conducted according to the PRISMA recommendations on published studies - of any design - investigating the clinical outcomes after switching for any reason to different anti-CGRP mAbs.
Results: The literature search retrieved 76 records, while 19 papers were eventually reviewed.

Delivery of health care, including medical imaging, generates substantial global greenhouse gas emissions. The cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) community has an opportunity to decrease our carbon footprint, mitigate the effects of the climate crisis, and develop resiliency to current and future impacts of climate change. The goal of this document is to review and recommend actions and strategies to allow for CMR operation with improved sustainability, including efficient CMR protocols and CMR imaging workflow strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, energy, and waste, and to decrease reliance on finite resources, including helium and waterbody contamination by gadolinium-based contrast agents.

Background: Cardiac Computed Tomography (CCT) is increasingly used to provide 2D, 3D and 4D information in patients with congenital heart disease of all ages. Historically, negotiated rates for professional and technical fees associated with cardiac imaging were confidential, with variability in professional, technical and global charges, reimbursement and cost to patients for the same current procedural terminology (CPT) code at different institutions. Billing transparency is a key component of both the CARE act passed in 2020 and the Health Care PRICE Transparency Act 2.

Targeted therapies, consisting of Bruton tyrosine kinase inhibitors (BTKis) or BCL-2 inhibitors, are the mainstay of contemporary treatments for chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). The most common adverse effects (AEs) of BTKis are fatigue, bruising, infection, hematological and cardiovascular AEs. While AEs during treatment are usually mild (grades 1 and 2), grade 3 and 4 AEs have been detected in some patients, necessitating additional medical care and temporary or permanent drug discontinuation.

A cytokine storm is marked by excessive pro-inflammatory cytokine release, and has emerged as a key factor in severe COVID-19 cases - making it a critical therapeutic target. However, its pathophysiology was poorly understood, which hindered effective treatment. SARS-CoV-2 initially disrupts angiotensin signalling, promoting inflammation through ACE-2 downregulation.

Background: Understanding similarities and differences between hesitancy for influenza and COVID-19 vaccines could facilitate strategies to improve public receptivity toward vaccination.
Methods: We compared hesitancy for COVID-19 vaccines during the first 13 months of availability (January 2021-January 2022) with hesitancy for influenza vaccines in the 15 months prior to COVID-19 vaccine availability (October 2019-December 2020) among adults hospitalized with acute respiratory illness at 21 hospitals in the United States. We interviewed patients regarding vaccination status, willingness to be vaccinated, and perceptions of vaccine safety and efficacy.

In the present study, porcine-derived collagen type I was covalently immobilized on the surface of titanium (Ti) implants via carboxyl groups introduced by bonded p-vinylbenzoic acid to investigate its in vitro biocompatibility with gingival stem cells and in vivo bone regeneration behavior in the edentulous ridges of Lanyu small-ear pigs at weeks 2 and 6 (short-term effectiveness) through micro-computed tomography and histological analysis. Analytical results found that gingival stem cells showed effective adhesion and spreading on these collagen-immobilized implant surfaces. After 2 and 6 weeks of healing, significant differences in Hounsfield units were observed among the control (week 2 (674.
