Descartes' systematic physics had little to do with his quantitative accounts of natural phenomena. The former was metaphysical and was concerned with uncovering the causes operating in nature, while the latter dealt with establishing mathematical relations between various natural quantities. I reconstruct a dominant interpretation in recent literature which argues that the two practices are autonomous, and that quantitative problem-solving is normatively subordinated to metaphysical physics.

The Brain Tumor Group (BTG) of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) conducts academic clinical trials and translational research to improve clinical management of patients with primary and secondary brain tumors. The EORTC BTG has traditionally played an important role in providing evidence and thus advancing the field, albeit with a main focus on radiotherapy and pharmacotherapy in gliomas. Although examples of well-designed neuro-oncological surgical trials can be found, evidence in surgical neuro-oncology predominantly includes data from uncontrolled prospective series or retrospective cohorts.

This study investigates the effects of a five-week training program on the medial gastrocnemius muscle, comparing two approaches: blood flow restriction (BFR) training and normobaric hyperoxia (oxygen supplementation). It evaluates three strengthening modalities (dynamic, isometric, and the 3/7 method) analyzing their impact on maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), muscle architecture, and perceived exertion. A total of 36 young healthy participants (21 females, 15 males) were randomized into six subgroups (n = 6 each) based on the type of contraction and oxygen condition.

The COVID-19 pandemic had a major worldwide impact resulting in more than 7 million deaths due to COVID-19. Mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have been observed in COVID-19 survivors worldwide. This study aimed to investigate the psychological impact of COVID-19 survivors three months after discharge from hospital and examine associated risk factors.

Treatment of attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in patients with a substance use disorder (SUD) and comorbid ADHD (SUD +ADHD) may have positive effects on the outcome of both conditions, but controversy exists regarding the preferred ADHD treatment in these patients. Little is known about the treatments that are provided for these patients in routine addiction care practice and the factors that are associated with treatment provision. To describe the treatments provided in everyday clinical practice and to explore factors associated with ADHD treatment provision in patients with SUD +ADHD.

Background: Cerebral visual impairment (CVI) can negatively affect a child's functioning, emphasising the need for interventions to improve visual perception (VP), potentially translating into improved health-related quality of life (HRQOL).
Aims: Assessing the effectiveness of an adaptive individualised game-based rehabilitation, iVision, on VP, visual function, functional vision, and HRQOL.
Methods And Procedures: Seventy-three children with CVI (3-12 performance age) were randomised into the adaptive individualised or the non-adaptive non-individualised group (3 sessions/week; 12 weeks).

Repeat human leukocyte antigen (HLA) mismatches (RMM) have been historically associated with an increased risk of graft loss after repeat kidney transplantation, in particular HLA-DR RMM in sensitized recipients. As routine use of sensitive assays can at present prevent the transplantation of RMM in hosts with donor-specific antibodies, we hypothesized that RMM would no longer be associated with graft loss. We performed a registry analysis of the Collaborative Transplant Study database including 6711 patients who received a second kidney transplant (KT) between 2010 and 2021, with at least 1 HLA-A, HLA-B, or HLA-DR mismatch.

Biological organisms engineer peptide sequences to fold into membrane pore proteins capable of performing a wide variety of transport functions. Synthetic de novo-designed membrane pores can mimic this approach to achieve a potentially even larger set of functions. Here we explore water, solute, and ion transport in three de novo designed β-barrel membrane channels in the 5-10 Å pore size range.

Background: Older people who die from serious chronic disease typically experience long periods (months or years) of illness and complex fluctuations in their physical health and in their social, psychological and existential well-being. Our understanding of these end-of-life trajectories is very limited, focuses predominantly on physical function and clinical predictors and neglects inter-individual differences. A better understanding of end-of-life trajectories, including what is shared among people and what is individually specific, is needed for an optimal provision of palliative care and health services planning.

Background: Implicit motor sequence learning (IMSL) is a cognitive function that allows us to execute multiple movements in a specific sequential order and plays a crucial role in our daily functional activities. Although the role of the basal ganglia network in IMSL is well-established, the exact involvement of the cerebellar network is less clear.
Aim: Here, we aimed to address this issue by investigating the effects of cerebellar transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) on IMSL.

Background: A proposed new global definition of ARDS seeks to update the Berlin definition and account for nonintubated ARDS and ARDS diagnoses in resource-variable settings.
Research Question: How do ARDS epidemiologic characteristics change with operationalizing the new global definition of ARDS in a resource-limited setting?
Study Design And Methods: We performed a real-use retrospective cohort study among adult patients meeting criteria for the Berlin definition of ARDS or the global definition of ARDS at ICU admission in two public hospitals in the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health, South Africa, from January 2017 through June 2022.
Results: Among 5,760 adults (aged ≥ 18 years) admitted to the ICU, 2,027 patients (35.

The mutations driving cancer are being increasingly exposed through tumor-specific genomic data. However, differentiating between cancer-causing driver mutations and random passenger mutations remains challenging. State-of-the-art homology-based predictors contain built-in biases and are often ill-suited to the intricacies of cancer biology.

Whole genome sequencing (WGS) marks a turning point for outbreak investigations for microorganisms related to public health matters, like Legionella pneumophila (Lp). Here, we evaluated the available Lp WGS typing tools for isolates of previously documented Belgian outbreaks, as well as small groups of related and non-related isolates. One reference strain and 77 clinical and environmental isolates were evaluated.

The NADPH/NADP redox couple is central to metabolism and redox signalling. NADP redox state is differentially regulated by distinct enzymatic machineries at the subcellular compartment level. Nonetheless, a detailed understanding of subcellular NADP redox dynamics is limited by the availability of appropriate tools.

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has shown its ability to characterize biological substances down to a single-molecule level without a specific biorecognition mechanism. Various nanofabrication technologies enable SERS substrate prototyping and mass manufacturing. This study reports a complete cycle of design, fabrication, prototyping, and metrology of SERS substrates based on two-photon polymerization (2PP).

Background: Accumulation of malignant plasma cells in the bone marrow causes lytic bone lesions in 80% of multiple myeloma patients. Frequently fracturing, they are challenging to treat surgically. Myeloma cells surviving treatment in the presumably protective environment of bone lesions impede their healing by continued impact on bone turnover and can explain regular progression of patients without detectable minimal residual disease (MRD).

Pertussis resurgence has been documented even in countries with high pediatric vaccine coverage. The proportion of isolates not expressing pertactin (PRN) has increased in several countries where acellular pertussis (aP) vaccines are used. We systematically reviewed published literature up to July 2023 on PRN-negative isolates in MEDLINE and Embase with no geographical limitations, complemented with a gray literature search.

Pruritus is a hallmark symptom of atopic dermatitis (AD) and is known to worsen patients' health-related quality of life. Lebrikizumab is a high-affinity monoclonal antibody which binds IL-13, a dominant cytokine implicated in AD. This study includes data from two Phase 3 randomized controlled trials assessing the efficacy and safety of lebrikizumab in patients with moderate-to-severe AD, ADvocate1 (NCT04146363) and ADvocate2 (NCT04178967).
