Design and Evaluation of Peer Supervision for Community Mental Health Workers: A Task-Shifting Strategy in Low-Resource Settings.

The use of Lay Mental Health Workers (LMHWs) to tackle the treatment gap in low-resource settings is well established, and although they often receive training, the potential of proper supervision to improve outcomes remains untapped. Indeed, given the strain on expert resources, peer-supervision models based on supervisors' seniority of work experience have significant potential especially in relation to community knowledge and embedding of LMHWs. This study summarizes the evaluation of a pilot program for peer supervision on the basis of Social Cognitive Theories of Self-Efficacy for LMHWs in Kerala, India.

Pre-stroke activities of daily living do not predict functional decline after stroke in a cohort of community dwelling older subjects at risk for vascular disease.

Background & Purpose: Pre-stroke impairment of activities of daily living (ADL) is considered a major determinant for functional outcome after stroke. However, findings are based on studies in stroke patients in which pre-stroke information is gathered retrospectively, with inherent risks of selection and recall bias. The objective of this study was to verify the predictive value of pre-stroke ADL with respect to ADL decline in a large prospective cohort of community dwelling older subjects with known vascular risk factors or vascular disease, thereby minimizing selection and recall bias.

Using the Behavior Change Wheel to Identify and Understand Key Facilitators and Barriers for Lifestyle Care for Postmenopausal Breast Cancer Survivors: A Delphi-Study.

Background: Optimal approaches to promote sustained adherence to lifestyle and bodyweight recommendations in postmenopausal breast cancer (PMBC) survivors are lacking.

Purpose: This Delphi-study aims to identify and understand expert-opinion on potential barriers and facilitators for promoting adherence to these lifestyle and bodyweight recommendations in (clinical) care for PMBC survivors, and to determine potential effective intervention strategies.

Methods: The expert panel consisted of oncology Health Care Professionals (HCPs) (N = 57), patient advocates (N = 5), and PMBC survivors (N = 38).

Ensuring safe and healthy food is a big challenge due to the complexity of food supply chains and their vulnerability to many internal and external factors, including food fraud. Recent research has shown that Artificial Intelligence (AI) based algorithms, in particularly data driven Bayesian Network (BN) models, are very suitable as a tool to predict future food fraud and hence allowing food producers to take proper actions to avoid that such problems occur. Such models become even more powerful when data can be used from all actors in the supply chain, but data sharing is hampered by different interests, data security and data privacy.

Observation of a Resonant Structure near the D_{s}^{+}D_{s}^{-} Threshold in the B^{+}→D_{s}^{+}D_{s}^{-}K^{+} Decay.

An amplitude analysis of the B^{+}→D_{s}^{+}D_{s}^{-}K^{+} decay is carried out to study for the first time its intermediate resonant contributions, using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. A near-threshold peaking structure, referred to as X(3960), is observed in the D_{s}^{+}D_{s}^{-} invariant-mass spectrum with significance greater than 12 standard deviations. The mass, width, and the quantum numbers of the structure are measured to be 3956±5±10  MeV, 43±13±8  MeV, and J^{PC}=0^{++}, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic.

The Co-Twin Control Design: Implementation and Methodological Considerations.

Establishing causal relationships in observational studies is an important step in research and policy decision making. The association between an exposure and an outcome can be confounded by multiple factors, often making it hard to draw causal conclusions. The co-twin control design (CTCD) is a powerful approach that allows for the investigation of causal effects while controlling for genetic and shared environmental confounding factors.

Effects of smoking on genome-wide DNA methylation profiles: A study of discordant and concordant monozygotic twin pairs.

Background: Smoking-associated DNA methylation levels identified through epigenome-wide association studies (EWASs) are generally ascribed to smoking-reactive mechanisms, but the contribution of a shared genetic predisposition to smoking and DNA methylation levels is typically not accounted for.

Methods: We exploited a strong within-family design, that is, the discordant monozygotic twin design, to study reactiveness of DNA methylation in blood cells to smoking and reversibility of methylation patterns upon quitting smoking. Illumina HumanMethylation450 BeadChip data were available for 769 monozygotic twin pairs (mean age = 36 years, range = 18-78, 70% female), including pairs discordant or concordant for current or former smoking.

Behavioral changes are commonly observed in patients with dementia and can lead to criminal offenses, even without a history of criminal or antisocial behavior. Due to the growth of the aging population, this poses a rising problem to deal with for the criminal justice system and in general for society. Criminal behavior may include minor crimes such as theft or traffic violations, but also serious crimes such as physical abuse, sexual offense, or murder.

The effect of sex steroid hormones on the ecology of oral biofilms.

Sex steroid hormones (SSH) such as oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone are cholesterol derived molecules that regulate various physiological processes. They are present in both blood and saliva, where they come in contact with oral tissues and oral microorganisms. Several studies have confirmed the effect of these hormones on different periodontal-disease-associated bacteria, using single-species models.

Action needed to make carbon offsets from forest conservation work for climate change mitigation.

Carbon offsets from voluntary avoided-deforestation projects are generated on the basis of performance in relation to ex ante deforestation baselines. We examined the effects of 26 such project sites in six countries on three continents using synthetic control methods for causal inference. We found that most projects have not significantly reduced deforestation.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, public groups mobilised themselves in civil-society engagement practices (CSEPs) aiming to improve or suggest alternative epidemic management. This study explores the motivation to establish CSEPs and their perceived contributions to epidemic management, to gain insight whether integrating views of CSEPs could add value. A systematic online search was executed to identify CSEPs focused on COVID-19 management between January 2020 and January 2022 in the Netherlands.

Environment-Responsive Peptide Dimers Bind and Stabilize Double-Stranded RNA.

Double-stranded RNAs (dsRNA) possess immense potential for biomedical applications. However, their therapeutic utility is limited by low stability and poor cellular uptake. Different strategies have been explored to enhance the stability of dsRNA, including the incorporation of modified nucleotides, and the use of diverse carrier systems.

Endoscopic Surveillance for Colorectal Cancer in Pediatric Ulcerative Colitis: A Survey Among Dutch Pediatric Gastroenterologists.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the current clinical practice of Dutch pediatric gastroenterologists regarding the surveillance for colorectal dysplasia and cancer in pediatric ulcerative colitis (UC), including adherence to guidelines, the initiation and interval of surveillance and applied endoscopy techniques.

Methods: A clinical vignette-based survey was distributed among all 47 pediatric gastroenterologists who are registered and working in the Netherlands.

Results: Thirty-three pediatric gastroenterologists treating children with UC, completed the questionnaire (response rate 70%).

In-depth analysis of immunohistochemistry concordance in biopsy-resection pairs of bronchial carcinoids.

Primary diagnosis of bronchial carcinoids (BC) is always made on biopsies and additional immunohistochemistry (IHC) is often necessary. In the present study we investigated the concordance of common diagnostic (synaptophysin, chromogranin, CD56 and INSM-1) and potential prognostic (OTP, CD44, Rb and p16) IHC markers between the preoperative biopsies and resections of in total 64 BCs, 26 typical (41 %) and 38 atypical (59 %) carcinoid tumors. Synaptophysin and chromogranin had 100 % concordance in all resected carcinoids and paired diagnostic biopsies.

Test of Lepton Universality in b→sℓ^{+}ℓ^{-} Decays.

The first simultaneous test of muon-electron universality using B^{+}→K^{+}ℓ^{+}ℓ^{-} and B^{0}→K^{*0}ℓ^{+}ℓ^{-} decays is performed, in two ranges of the dilepton invariant-mass squared, q^{2}. The analysis uses beauty mesons produced in proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector between 2011 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9  fb^{-1}. Each of the four lepton universality measurements reported is either the first in the given q^{2} interval or supersedes previous LHCb measurements.

Search for Rare Decays of D^{0} Mesons into Two Muons.

A search for the very rare D^{0}→μ^{+}μ^{-} decay is performed using data collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=7, 8, and 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9  fb^{-1}. The search is optimized for D^{0} mesons from D^{*+}→D^{0}π^{+} decays but is also sensitive to D^{0} mesons from other sources. No evidence for an excess of events over the expected background is observed.

Nuclear Modification Factor of Neutral Pions in the Forward and Backward Regions in p-Pb Collisions.

The nuclear modification factor of neutral pions is measured in proton-lead collisions collected at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon of 8.16 TeV with the LHCb detector. The π^{0} production cross section is measured differentially in transverse momentum (p_{T}) for 1.

Length of hospital stays and financial incentives: evidence from Dutch rehabilitation centers.

Non-linear reimbursement contracts in healthcare have been increasingly used to quantify providers' responses to financial incentives. In the present research, we utilize a large one-off increase in the reimbursement of rehabilitation care to assess to what extent providers are willing to modify their treating behavior to maximize profits. In order to disincentivize the use of short inpatient stays for rehabilitation care, Dutch policy-makers have instated a two-part stepwise tariff-schedule.

Impaired Direction Selectivity in the Nucleus of the Optic Tract of Albino Mice.

Purpose: Human albinos have a low visual acuity. This is partially due to the presence of spontaneous erroneous eye movements called pendular nystagmus. This nystagmus is present in other albino vertebrates and has been hypothesized to be caused by aberrant wiring of retinal ganglion axons to the nucleus of the optic tract (NOT), a part of the accessory optic system involved in the optokinetic response to visual motion.

Adding physical activity to intensive trauma-focused treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder: results of a randomized controlled trial.

Introduction: This randomized controlled trial examined the effectiveness of physical activity added to an intensive trauma-focused treatment (TFT) for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in comparison to adding non-physical control activities.

Methods: A total of 119 patients with PTSD were randomly assigned to a physical activity condition (PA; = 59) or a non-physical activity control condition (nPA; = 60). The 8-day intensive TFT programme consisted of daily prolonged exposure, EMDR therapy, and psychoeducation, which was complemented with physical activities versus controlled mixtures of guided (creative) tasks.
