Oncogenic membrane receptor tyrosine kinases such as MET and EGFR, or auto-active variants thereof, are important targets for cancer precision therapy. Targeted inhibition of these oncogenic receptors however invariably leads to resistance, resulting from acquisition of resistance-inducing mutations or from selective outgrowth of a priori resistant tumour cells. Most applied molecular protocols cannot distinguish between intracellular and intercellular heterogeneity of oncogene (variant) expression, which may lead to misinterpretation of the molecular make-up of a cancer and suboptimal application of targeted therapies.

Objective: To assess the value of the central vein sign (CVS) on a clinical 3T scanner to distinguish between multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD).

Methods: Eighteen aquaporin-4-antibody-positive patients with NMOSD, 18 patients with relapsing-remitting MS, and 25 healthy controls underwent 3T MRI. The presence of a central vein in white matter lesions on susceptibility-weighted imaging, defined as a thin hypointense line or a small dot, was recorded.

Background: The integration of digital treatments into national mental health services is on the agenda in the European Union. The E-COMPARED consortium conducted a survey aimed at exploring stakeholders' knowledge, acceptance and expectations of digital treatments for depression, and at identifying factors that might influence their opinions when considering the implementation of these approaches.

Method: An online survey was conducted in eight European countries: France, Germany, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and The United Kingdom.

Objectives: In this exploratory study we examined the associations between several social network characteristics and lifestyle behaviours in adults at increased risk of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. In addition, we explored whether similarities in lifestyle between individuals and their network members, or the level of social support perceived by these individuals, could explain these associations.

Methods: From the control group of the Hoorn Prevention Study, participants with high and low educational attainment were approached for a structured interview between April and August 2010.

Purpose: This study aimed to examine the controllability of cylinder-shaped and dome-shaped magnifiers in young children with visual impairment.

Methods: This study investigates goal-directed arm movements in low-vision aid use (stand and dome magnifier-like object) in a group of young children with visual impairment (n = 56) compared to a group of children with normal sight (n = 66). Children with visual impairment and children with normal sight aged 4-8 years executed two types of movements (cyclic and discrete) in two orientations (vertical or horizontal) over two distances (10 cm and 20 cm) with two objects resembling the size and shape of regularly prescribed stand and dome magnifiers.

Towards a toolkit for cross-neglected tropical disease morbidity and disability assessment.

Int Health

March 2016

Netherlands Leprosy Relief, Amsterdam, Netherlands Disability Studies, Department of Metamedica, VU Medical Centre Amsterdam, Netherlands

Background: Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are a group of often chronic and disabling infectious conditions, closely related to poverty and inequities. While it is estimated that millions of people are affected, accurate and internationally comparable data about NTD-related morbidity and disability are lacking. Therefore we aimed to develop and pilot a toolkit to assess and monitor morbidity and disability across NTDs.

Knowing what predicts discontinuation or success of psychotherapies for Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is important to improve treatments. Many variables have been reported in the literature, but replication is needed and investigating what therapy process underlies the findings is necessary to understand why variables predict outcome. Using data of an RCT comparing Schema Therapy and Transference Focused Psychotherapy as treatments for BPD, variables derived from the literature were tested as predictors of discontinuation and treatment success.

Infantile nystagmus syndrome is associated with inefficiency of goal-directed hand movements.

Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci

December 2014

Bartiméus, Institute for the Visually Impaired, Zeist, The Netherlands Department Cognitive Neuroscience, Donders Institute for Brain, Radboud University Medical Center, Nijmegen, The Netherlands.

Purpose: The effect of infantile nystagmus syndrome (INS) on the efficiency of goal-directed hand movements was examined.

Methods: We recruited 37 children with INS and 65 control subjects with normal vision, aged 4 to 8 years. Participants performed horizontally-oriented, goal-directed cylinder displacements as if they displaced a low-vision aid.

Key PointsDyslexia is a neurological disorder with a genetic origin, but the underlying biological and cognitive causes are still being investigated. This study compares the brain activation pattern while reading in Spanish, a semitransparent language, in three groups of children: typically developing readers, dyslexic readers and readers with functional monocular vision.Based on our results Dyslexia would be a neurological disorder not related to vision impairments and would require a multidisciplinary treatment based on improving phonological awareness and language development.

Training robotic surgery in urology: experience and opinions of robot urologists.

Int J Med Robot

September 2015

Department of Educational Development and Research, FHML, Maastricht University, The Netherlands.

Background: To answer the research questions: (a) what were the training pathways followed by the first generation of robot urologists; and (b) what are their opinions on the ideal training for the future generation?

Methods: Data were gathered with a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews in a mixed-method research design.

Results: The results show that training approaches differed from hardly any formal training to complete self-initiated training programmes, with all available learning resources. The median number of supervised procedures at the start of robot-assisted laparoscopy was five (range 0-100).

Brain functional connectivity changes in children that differ in impulsivity temperamental trait.

Front Behav Neurosci

May 2014

Departamento de Psicología Básica y Metodología, University of Murcia Murcia, Spain ; Regional Campus of International Excellence "Campus Mare Nostrum", University of Murcia Murcia, Spain.

Impulsivity is a core personality trait forming part of normal behavior and contributing to adaptive functioning. However, in typically developing children, altered patterns of impulsivity constitute a risk factor for the development of behavioral problems. Since both pathological and non-pathological states are commonly characterized by continuous transitions, we used a correlative approach to investigate the potential link between personality and brain dynamics.
