Significance: Optical properties of biological tissues, such as refractive index (RI), are fundamental properties, intrinsically linked to the tissue's composition and structure. We hypothesize that, as the RI and the functional properties of articular cartilage (AC) are dependent on the tissue's structure and composition, the RI of AC is related to its biomechanical properties.
Aim: This study aims to investigate the relationship between RI of human AC and its biomechanical properties.

Introduction: Sleep-wake cycle disruption caused by shift work may lead to cardiovascular stress, which is observed as an alteration in the behavior of heart rate variability (HRV). In particular, HRV exhibits complex patterns over different time scales that help to understand the regulatory mechanisms of the autonomic nervous system, and changes in the fractality of HRV may be associated with pathological conditions, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or even psychological stress. The main purpose of this study is to evaluate the multifractal-multiscale structure of HRV during sleep in healthy shift and non-shift workers to identify conditions of cardiovascular stress that may be associated with shift work.

In the development of proteins, aptamers, and molecular imprints for diagnostic purposes, a major goal is to obtain a molecule with both a high binding affinity and specificity for the target ligand. Cushing syndrome or Addison's disease can be diagnosed by cortisol level tests. We have previously characterized and solved the crystal structure of an anti-cortisol (17) Fab fragment having a high affinity to cortisol but also significant cross-reactivity to other glucocorticoids, especially the glucocorticoid drug prednisolone.

Polyketides with the isochroman-3-one pharmacophore are rare among fungal natural products as their biosynthesis requires an unorthodox S-type aromatic ring cyclization. Genome mining uncovered a conserved gene cluster in select leotiomycetous fungi that encodes the biosynthesis of cytosporones, including isochroman-3-one congeners. Combinatorial biosynthesis in total biosynthetic and biocatalytic formats in and in vitro reconstitution of key reactions with purified enzymes revealed how cytosporone structural and bioactivity diversity is generated.

Hollow tubing and tubular filaments are highly relevant to membrane technologies, vascular tissue engineering, and others. In this context, we introduce hollow filaments (HF) produced through coaxial dry-jet wet spinning of cellulose dissolved in an ionic liquid ([emim][OAc]). The HF, developed upon regeneration in water (23 °C), displays superior mechanical performance (168 MPa stiffness and 60% stretchability) compared to biobased counterparts, such as those based on collagen.

Gluten is the main fraction of wheat proteins. It is widely used in the food industry because of the properties that are generated in the dough, but it is also able to trigger diseases like allergies, autoimmunity processes (such as celiac disease), and intolerances in sensitized persons. The most effective therapy for these diseases is the total avoidance of gluten in the diet because it not only prevents damage but also enhances tissue healing.

Efficient depolymerization of crystalline cellulose requires cooperation between multiple cellulolytic enzymes. Through biochemical approaches, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, and single-molecule observations using high-speed atomic force microscopy (HS-AFM), we quantify and track synergistic activity for cellobiohydrolases (CBHs) with a lytic polysaccharide monooxygenase (LPMO) from . Increasing concentrations of LPMO (AA9D) increased the activity of a glycoside hydrolase family 6 CBH, Cel6A, whereas the activity of a family 7 CBH (Cel7D) was enhanced only at lower concentrations of AA9D.

Nucleic acid and histone modifications critically depend on the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle for substrates and cofactors. Although a few TCA cycle enzymes have been reported in the nucleus, the corresponding pathways are considered to operate in mitochondria. Here, we show that a part of the TCA cycle is operational also in the nucleus.

Aqueous-phase reforming (APR) can convert methanol and other oxygenated hydrocarbons to hydrogen and carbon dioxide at lower temperatures when compared with the corresponding gas phase process. APR favours the water-gas shift (WGS) reaction and inhibits alkane formation; moreover, it is a simpler and more energy efficient process compared to gas-phase steam reforming. For example, Pt-based catalysts supported on alumina are typically selected for methanol APR, due to their high activity at temperatures of circa 200°C.

In this study, a nanocellulose-based material showing anisotopic conductivity is introduced. The material has up to 1000 times higher conductivity along the dry-line boundary direction than along the radial direction. In addition to the material itself, the method to produce the material is novel and is based on the alignment of cationic cellulose nanofibers (c-CNFs) along the dry-line boundary of an evaporating droplet composed of c-CNFs in two forms and conductive multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs).
