Background: Subacute and chronic subdural hematomas are common and frequently recur after surgical evacuation. The effect of adjunctive middle meningeal artery embolization on the risk of reoperation remains unclear.

Methods: In a prospective, multicenter, interventional, adaptive-design trial, we randomly assigned patients with symptomatic subacute or chronic subdural hematoma with an indication for surgical evacuation to undergo middle meningeal artery embolization plus surgery (treatment group) or surgery alone (control group).

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the relationship between heart rate variability (HRV) and residual renal function (RRF) in patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) to determine if these parameters can predict RRF decline.
  • Researchers analyzed clinical data and autonomic nervous system activity from 98 patients and categorized them into two groups based on their 1-year decline in glomerular filtration rate (GFR).
  • A nomogram model was developed that combined clinical factors and skin sympathetic nerve activity, showing high accuracy (AUC of 0.940) in predicting RRF decline over one year.

Background: Currently, there is no consensus on how to comprehensively assess comorbidities in lung cancer patients in the clinical setting. Prescription medications may be a preferred comorbidity assessment tool and provide a simple mechanism for predicting postoperative outcomes for lung cancer. We examined the relationship between prescription medications and postoperative outcomes for early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Background: His-bundle pacing (HBP) is a pacing mode that provides near-physiological pacing and has more advantages over standard right ventricle (RV) septum pacing in positive clinical results. However, traditional HBP cannot accurately and stably place the lead tip into the His-Purkinje system. Hence, this study aimed to establish a novel strategy for HBP to strike a balance between an excellent pacing threshold and minor injuries to the conduction system.

Objective: Cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) diversion methods, including ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunts, are the standard treatment for hydrocephalus. Hair clipping (HC) has been a routine neurosurgical practice of the great majority of neurosurgeons, due to the perception that this will either decrease the risk of shunt infection or allow for a faster, unimpeded opening and closing of the skin. The benefits of not cutting or clipping hair in terms of normalizing appearance and self-esteem are obvious.

Parkinsonism, commonly associated with Parkinson disease (PD), can also arise from other neurodegenerative disorders or non-neurodegenerative causes such as vascular parkinsonism (VP). This case highlights the acute onset of VP following a stroke, contributing to the understanding of VP's varied presentations and the challenges in its diagnosis. A 54-year-old male with a history of cerebrovascular disease presented with behavioral changes and reduced activity, initially raising the suspicion of a central nervous system infection.

This comprehensive review article gives an up-to-date assessment of the therapeutic landscape for warts and molluscum contagiosum (MC), focusing on advances made in the last 5 years. New treatment choices include VP-102 (Ycanth) for molluscum contagiosum, potentially intralesional Vitamin D3 for warts, and topical cidofovir for both. Immunotherapy is regarded as a potential option, especially in difficult situations.

Endometriosis is a chronic systemic condition characterized by the presence of ectopic endometrial-like tissue outside of the uterus. It occurs most often in reproductive-aged patients and less frequently in postmenopausal women. In postmenopausal patients, endometriosis is more common in those undergoing hormone replacement therapy or taking tamoxifen.

Intestinal Permeability In Subjects With Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Critical Therapeutic Priority.

Integr Med (Encinitas)

November 2024

VP and National Director of Medical Services, AndHealth, Columbus, Ohio; Associate Professor, Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine, University of Arizona College of Medicine, Tucson, Arizona.

Article Synopsis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis is recognized as part of a group of systemic autoimmune diseases, all sharing similar immune-signaling pathways despite having unique symptoms.
  • Advances in treatment have focused on blocking inflammatory mediators like cytokines and JAK inhibitors but have seen less progress in targeting the root causes of inflammation, such as leaky gut and gut microbiota imbalances.
  • The review highlights how issues with intestinal permeability are linked to several chronic conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, suggesting that improving gut health could help patients manage their symptoms and achieve remission.

Objectives: To develop a nomogram based on clinical features and spectral quantitative parameters to preoperatively predict the Lauren classification for locally advanced gastric cancer (LAGC).

Methods: Patients diagnosed with LAGC by postoperative pathology who underwent abdominal triple-phase enhanced spectral computed tomography (CT) were prospectively enrolled in this study between June 2023 and December 2023. All the patients were categorized into intestinal- and diffuse-type groups according to the Lauren classification.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a pressing global health challenge that necessitates the search for novel antimicrobial agents and synthetic methodologies. This study investigates the synthesis and antimicrobial efficacy of 25 novel 1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine derivatives, catalyzed by Amla (Phyllanthus emblica) fruit juice, which is rich in organic acids and polyphenolic compounds, thus serving as an environmentally sustainable catalyst, in adherence to green chemistry principles. The synthesis is achieved through a one-pot, solvent-free process that yields high quantities of the desired compounds in significantly less time compared to traditional methods.

Electronic address:

Published works highlight the role of neuropeptides in both the development and treatment of AUD. Closely related hypothalamic neuropeptides, oxytocin (OT) and vasopressin (VP), initially recognized for their physiological hormone effects, are increasingly acknowledged for their behavioral influences. Studies consistently demonstrate that OT and VP impact alcohol consumption and related behaviors, implicating them in the neurobiology of addiction.

Malignant glioma is a highly fatal central nervous system malignancy with high recurrence rates. Oncolytic viruses offer potential treatment but need improvement in efficacy and safety. Here we describe a phase I, dose-escalating, single arm trial (ChiCTR2000032402) to study the safety of Ad-TD-nsIL12, an oncolytic adenovirus expressing non-secreting interleukin-12, in patients with recurrent high-grade glioma that connects with the ventricular system.
