Introduction: Radial artery (RA) spasm is demonstrated to be one of the most common complications of transradial approach (TRA).

Aim: We hypothesised that radial flow-mediated dilation (FMD) can be used as a preprocedural method to assess the likelihood of arterial spasm.

Material And Methods: The patients were divided into 2 groups: those with and without flow-mediated RA dilatation.

Background: Two fundamental challenges in the current therapeutic approach for central nervous system tumors are the tumor heterogeneity and the absence of specific treatments and biomarkers that selectively target the tumor tissue. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the potential relationship between discoidin domain receptor 1 (DDR1) expression and the prognosis and characteristics of glioma patients.

Materials And Methods: Tissue and serum samples from 34 brain tumor patients were evaluated for DDR1 messenger ribonucleic acid levels in comparison to 10 samples from the control group, and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis has performed.

To compare the effectiveness of thromboembolic risk scores in determining in-hospital events of COVID-19 patients. This retrospective study included a total of 410 consecutive COVID-19 patients. Scores including CHADS-VASc-HS (congestive heart failure, hypertension, age, diabetes mellitus, stroke/transient ischemic attack, vascular disease, sex, hyperlipidemia, smoking); modified RCHADS-VASc (CHADS-VASc plus renal function), m-ATRIA (modified Anticoagulation and Risk Factors in Atrial Fibrillation score), ATRIA-HSV (ATRIA plus hyperlipidemia, smoking and vascular disease) and modified ATRIA-HSV were calculated.

Introduction: Early diagnosis reduces mortality and morbidity rates in gastrointestinal system (GIS) anastomoses.

Aim: The aim of the present study was to investigate the importance of some substances that were used to detect major complications early in patients who were treated in line with the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol for gastric cancer. Factors included in the study were interleukin-1 (IL-1), tumor necrosis factor- (TNF-), C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT) and white blood cell (WBC).

HATCH Score for Predicting Mortality in COVID-19 Patients.

Iran J Public Health

December 2022

Department of Cardiology, Adana City Training and Research Hospital, University of Health Sciences, Adana, Turkey.

Background: We aimed to evaluate the relationship between HATCH score [hypertension, age >75 yr, previous transient ischemic attack (TIA) or stroke (doubled), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart failure (doubled)] and in-hospital mortality in COVID-19 patients.

Methods: Overall, 572 COVID-19 patients hospitalized between Mar 15 and Apr 15, 2020, were included in this multicenter retrospective study, in Turkey. The HATCH score of each patient was calculated.

Purpose: Isolated coronary artery ectasia (ICAE) is a rare coronary artery disease (CAD) encountered during coronary angiography. Although many mechanisms have been suggested today that may be associated with ICAE, the underlying pathogenesis has not been fully understood. In this study, we aimed to reveal the possible relationship between intestinal permeability and ICAE.

Introduction: A harmonious face is defined in terms of a balanced relationship among all facial tissues. This balance among skin, fat, muscle, and bone is lost with aging as progressive changes occur in their volume, shape, position, and consistency. Aging of the human face generally starts in the third decade of life, mainly in the midface and periorbital areas.

Changes in VGF and C3aR1 gene expression in human adipose tissue in obesity.

Mol Biol Rep

January 2021

Department of Medical Biology, Faculty of Medicine, Istanbul Aydin University, Istanbul, Turkey.

The VGF gene, which has been shown to be metabolically associated with energy balance, glucose homeostasis, insulin secretion process, and biological processes related to overeating, is prominent in relation to obesity. TLQP-21 neuropeptide, derived from the VGF, is considered to promote lipolysis by the beta-adrenergic pathway through targeting the C3aR1 receptor located in the adipocyte membrane. In this study, we aimed to measure the expression levels of the VGF and C3aR1 genes in the adipose tissue of obese subjects and individuals with normal weight determined based on body mass index (BMI), and to reveal the correlation of these levels with obesity.

Objective: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease that was first reported in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, and has since spread rapidly around the world, resulting in the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The CHA2DS2-VASc score is a well-validated risk stratification tool for predicting stroke in atrial fibrillation (AFib), as well as morbidity and mortality in several entities. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the CHA2DS2-VASc score and in-hospital mortality in patients with COVID-19, regardless of AFib.

Objectives: The aim of this observational clinical study was to evaluate the success of angiographic selective venous sampling (ASVS) in locating parathyroid adenoma in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), in whom the other imaging modalities have failed, and and to evaluate its possible contribution to the applicability of minimal invasive surgery.

Material And Methods: Fifty-five patients who were admitted to our hospital's General Surgery department between January 2012 and January 2015 for PHPT in whom ultrasound and sestamibi scintigraphy have failed to localize the diseased gland were included to the study. Patients were divided into two groups: those who underwent ASVS and those who did not.

Transperitoneal laparoscopic surgery in large adrenal masses.

Wideochir Inne Tech Maloinwazyjne

March 2020

Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Aydin University, VM Medical Park Florya Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assesses the safety and effectiveness of laparoscopic adrenalectomy (LA) for adrenal masses 6 cm or larger, comparing outcomes with smaller masses.
  • Data from 128 patients were analyzed, excluding certain cases, revealing that surgery duration was longer for larger masses, but complication rates and hospital stays were similar across different mass sizes.
  • Findings suggest laparoscopic techniques can be safely applied to larger masses, challenging traditional guidelines that recommend open surgery, with no significant differences in short-term results identified.

Background:  Microsurgical lower extremity reconstruction remains challenging, especially when resources are limited such as lack of proper equipment, human resources, administrative support, and located in a remote area far from tertiary care. Nevertheless, reconstructive solutions are required, especially when in urgent trauma situations. In this article, we evaluate ways of overcoming challenges and issues that should be considered in a newly established unit by sharing our initial lower extremity reconstruction experience.

In this study, we aimed to evaluate the diagnostic value of thyroid imaging reporting and data system (TIRADS) in the estimation of malignancy and assess the concordance between TIRADS and the histopathology results of the postoperative specimens. Consecutive ultrasound imaging records of patients with multinodular goiter from January 2010 to December 2017 who underwent surgery were retrospectively reviewed. The risk of malignancy of each TIRADS category was determined, and correlation with pathology was assessed.
