Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess if a survey measuring prospective medical students' attitudes toward service-learning in an Immunology course was reliable and valid, with only eight survey items.
  • Fifty-eight students in Colorado and fifteen in Utah participated, completing the same course and critical reflections on team service-learning before taking the survey.
  • Results showed high reliability (Cronbach's alpha values of 0.84 and 0.85) and a strong positive attitude towards service-learning in Colorado students, while Utah students had a more neutral attitude, indicating the survey’s effectiveness in capturing these differences.

Premedication in anesthesia has long been used to reduce patient anxiety, increase patient compliance, and supplement the overall anesthetic. In pediatric populations, premedication also has the indirect benefits of reducing parental anxiety as well as both the incidence and severity of emergence delirium. Oral midazolam, selected for its ease of administration, short duration of action, and reliable anxiolytic and amnestic effects, has been a favorite choice in this role for decades.

Purpose: To perform a systematic review to compare clinical outcomes, complications, and reoperation rates of patients undergoing the Latarjet procedure with screw vs suture-button fixation.

Methods: A systematic review was performed by searching PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and Embase to identify clinical studies directly comparing screw vs suture-button fixation for the Latarjet procedure. The search terms used were shoulder screw suture button.

Hypokalemic periodic paralysis (HypoPP) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by low potassium levels and episodic periods of muscle weakness. HypoPP has previously been attributed to numerous viral infections; however, cases related to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are extremely limited. The current case is thus unique and involves a healthy 23-year-old male who presented to the emergency department after several uncharacteristic falls and three days of upper and lower extremity weakness.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates two teaching methods—landmark-guided palpation and ultrasound-guided techniques—for training medical students on subclavian central venous access using formalin-embalmed cadavers.
  • After training, students' confidence improved significantly in both groups, with those trained using ultrasound showing better performance with fewer skin punctures and failures compared to the palpation group.
  • The conclusion emphasizes that using cadavers for practice enhances confidence in procedural skills, potentially leading to better outcomes and fewer complications in real clinical settings.

Pulmonary aspiration is a severe complication in patients receiving anesthesia for surgical procedures. The risk and severity of aspiration are significantly higher in the presence of substantial gastric contents. Bedside ultrasound imaging of the gastric antrum is emerging as a rapid and valuable method to evaluate gastric contents before surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • SARS-CoV-2 causes a range of COVID-19 disease severities, influenced by immune responses that are affected by variants like Omicron.
  • * The protein C1 esterase inhibitor (C1-INH), which regulates the immune system, is found at higher levels in severe COVID-19 cases and may paradoxically worsen the disease.
  • * This review discusses C1-INH’s role in immune response and explores current clinical trials testing exogenous C1-INH treatment for COVID-19.

Propofol is used for sedation, anxiolysis, anesthesia induction, and as an anticonvulsant. In cases of refractory status epilepticus (RSE), propofol is more efficient than barbiturates. We present a case of a 3-year-old female with RSE who developed propofol-related infusion syndrome (PRIS) despite low dosage after failed attempts with multiple anti-epileptic drips and bolus therapies.

Although there is evidence that psychological stress may be associated with increased cancer risk, the effect of stress on cancer risk is difficult to study, both in humans, due to socioeconomic factors, and in animal models, due to questionable biological relevance. Here, we test whether heritable canine temperament that increases psychological stress is associated with cancer risk. The study data are breed-specific averages of incidences of multiple cancer types and of temperament classes.

In this case report, we present a critical situation during an open calvarial reconstruction involving an 11-month-old infant. The patient experienced accidental extubation, requiring immediate intervention while in the prone position. Approximately two hours post-incision, ventilation became increasingly difficult due to a significant leak detected in the system.

Mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) syndrome is a complex and infrequently encountered mitochondrial cytopathy. Patients with MELAS often present with multi-systemic manifestations, making their anesthetic management particularly challenging. In this case report, we describe in detail our anesthetic approach for a 19-year-old male with confirmed MELAS linked to an m.

In this systematic review, we address the status of intracortical brain-computer interfaces (iBCIs) applied to the motor cortex to improve function in patients with impaired motor ability. This study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 Guidelines for Systematic Reviews. Risk Of Bias In Non-randomized Studies - of Interventions (ROBINS-I) and the Effective Public Health Practice Project (EPHPP) were used to assess bias and quality.

Sclerotherapy with bleomycin can cause cosmetic complications, including flagellate dermatitis and hyperpigmentation, induced or exacerbated by microtrauma to the skin. We report a case of a 9-year-old pediatric patient with congenital vascular malformations in which a cohesive bandage (eg, 3M Coban) was utilized to prevent bleomycin-induced hyperpigmentation. Postoperatively and on follow-up, there were no signs of hyperpigmentation or dermatitis in our patient.

  • Postmortem redistribution (PMR) can alter drug concentrations after death, influenced by factors like drug properties, blood collection site, body storage, and time since death (PMI).
  • A study evaluated PMR of THC in rabbits, showing that THC levels increased in heart blood at 2 hours and in peripheral blood at 16 hours postmortem, depending on whether the body was refrigerated or at room temperature.
  • The research found varying ratios of THC in different body fluids and tissues, with lungs having the highest THC concentrations, while this study provides essential insights for toxicologists in legal investigations involving THC.

  • Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), like omeprazole, are commonly prescribed for various gastrointestinal issues but their long-term effects, particularly concerning celiac disease (CD), are not fully understood.
  • Recent research indicates that PPIs may influence the development of CD by affecting the gut microbiome and triggering an inflammatory response, emphasizing the need for further studies.
  • The review advocates for a personalized approach to medication for patients on long-term PPI therapy, considering genetic factors like HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8 that may increase the risk of developing CD.
