Background: The open Latarjet procedure yields excellent results as a treatment for anterior shoulder instability. The position of the bony fragment and the insertion angle of the screw (the alpha angle) are critical factors for a successful procedure. The alpha angle is considered overangulated at >25°, which is associated with poor bone fixation and healing.

Background: Three-dimensionally printed titanium (3D-Ti) cages can be divided into 2 types: window-type cages, which have a void for bone graft, and non-window-type cages without a void. Few studies have investigated the necessity of a void for bone graft in fusion surgery. Therefore, the present study assessed the clinical and radiographic outcomes of window and non-window-type 3D-Ti cages in single-level posterior lumbar interbody fusion.

Article Synopsis
  • - Vancomycin is an important antibiotic that requires careful monitoring to ensure its effectiveness against Gram-positive bacterial infections, with recent guidelines recommending AUC (area under the curve) based monitoring for better therapeutic outcomes.
  • - Researchers developed a new simplified equation, called SSTA, which estimates AUC using steady-state trough concentration and other patient factors based on data from over 1,000 TDM records from hospitalized patients.
  • - The SSTA model was validated against data from other hospitals and demonstrated competitive accuracy in predicting AUC, indicating it could serve as a useful tool for monitoring vancomycin therapy effectively and easily.

Purpose: We investigated the efficacy and optimal dosage of recombinant Bacillus Calmette-Guérin-dltA (rBCG-dltA) in a high-throughput 3D bio-printed bladder cancer-on-a-chip (BCOC) and orthotopic bladder cancer mouse model.

Materials And Methods: We fabricated high-throughput BCOC with microfluidic systems, enabling efficient drug screening. The efficacy of rBCG-dltA was evaluated using BCOC by the cell viability assay, monocyte migration assay, and measuring cytokine levels.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to identify how common periprosthetic occult femoral fractures are during primary cementless total hip arthroplasty (THA) and what factors contribute to their development.
  • Out of 199 hips examined, 10.6% had undetected fractures, with a significant relationship found between these fractures and female patients, who had a higher risk as compared to males.
  • The findings suggest that female patients with unexplained early thigh pain or intraoperative fractures around the lesser trochanter should be evaluated with a CT scan for potential occult fractures.

A Case Report of Early-Onset Alzheimer's Disease Using F-FDG PET and F-FBB PET.

Diagnostics (Basel)

May 2023

Department of Neurology, VHS Medical Center, Seoul 05368, Republic of Korea.

We describe a 40-year-old female patient who presented with sleep disturbance, intermittent headache, and gradual subjective cognitive decline. F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) showed mild FDG hypometabolism in bilateral parietal and temporal lobes. However, F-florbetaben (FBB) amyloid PET revealed diffuse amyloid retention in the lateral temporal cortex, frontal cortex, posterior cingulate cortex/precuneus, parietal cortex, and cerebellum.

Study Design: Retrospective observational study.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the impact of plating on postoperative serial segmental motion and its correlation with clinical outcomes in single-level anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) for up to 1 year.

Overview Of Literature: The advantages and disadvantages of using cervical plating in ACDF have been well discussed; however, few studies compared the early serial segmental motions at the postoperative level between plating and non-plating.

Background & Aims: Post-gastrectomy vitamin D deficiency can result in osteoporosis and fractures, which can decrease patient quality of life and increase their socioeconomic burden. However, because there is no consensus around preoperative measurement and regular postoperative monitoring of serum vitamin D [25(OH)vitD] level for gastric cancer patients, we performed a retrospective study with a single high-volume center experience.

Methods: We reviewed a database of 614 gastric cancer patients who underwent curative gastrectomy between December 2015 and December 2019.

We describe a case of F-FDG PET/CT detecting septic pulmonary emboli in a patient with catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI). The patient, who had an implantable venous access port for chemotherapy, underwent F-FDG PET/CT to diagnose unsuspected infectious foci. The PET/CT examination made it possible to offer a suggestive diagnosis and yielded metastatic infectious foci.

Purpose: This study aimed to compare functional and oncological outcomes between partial nephrectomy (PN) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for a small renal mass (SRM, ≤4 cm) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Materials And Methods: Patients with CKD who underwent either PN or RFA for SRM between 2005 and 2019 were included. Patients were stratified into two categories: CKD stage 2 and CKD stage 3 or higher.

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and magnetization transfer (MT) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can help detect spinal cord pathology, and tract-specific analysis of their parameters, such as fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity, axial diffusivity (AD), radial diffusivity (RD) and MT ratio (MTR), can give microstructural information. We performed the tract-based acquisition of MR parameters of three major motor tracts: the lateral corticospinal (CS), rubrospinal (RuS) tract, and lateral reticulospinal (RS) tract as well as two major sensory tracts, i.e.

The degree of blood vessel stenosis significantly influences diabetic foot treatment. This study aimed to investigate the association between computed tomography angiography (CTA) stenosis and skin perfusion pressure (SPP), which are noninvasive vascular assessments used to evaluate diabetic foot wounds. Forty patients who reported diabetic foot wounds between November 2016 and December 2017 were included in the study.

Despite its high incidence rate, vertebral fragility fracture (VFF) is frequently underdiagnosed due to the absence of marked symptoms. This study evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of our suggested physical examinations and compared them with that of plain radiographs. Patients over 65 years of age with sudden back pain within the preceding 3 weeks were enrolled.

Background: Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) is one of the most reliable markers of ovarian reserve. Automated AMH assays are widely used in clinical laboratories, but reference intervals for the Elecsys AMH assay for Asian populations have not yet been determined. We aimed to determine reference intervals in healthy Korean women.

Purpose: This study investigated the accuracy of full-arch intraoral scans obtained by various scan strategies with the segmental scan and merge methods.

Materials And Methods: Seventy intraoral scans (seven scans per group) were performed using 10 scan strategies that differed in the segmental scan (1, 2, or 3 segments) and the scanning motion (straight, zigzag, or combined). The three-dimensional (3D) geometric accuracy of scan images was evaluated by comparison with a reference image in an image analysis software program, in terms of the arch shape discrepancies.

Purpose: The recombinant Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) containing the streptococcal inhibitor of the complement gene (rBCG-) may be more resistant to antimicrobial peptides and improve internalization; therefore, it can enhance the immunotherapeutic effect of the BCG. Here we determined the optimal dose of rBCG- and compared its effectiveness with that of BCG.

Materials And Methods: We fabricated a high-throughput 3D-bioprinted bladder cancer-on-a-chip (BCOC) and used it to evaluate the effectiveness of the rBCG- in terms of cell viability, cell migration, and cytokine concentrations.
