Objective: To determine if short-duration peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) cause a hypercoagulable state in healthy dogs, based on point-of-care viscoelastic coagulation monitor (VCM).

Animals: Ten beagle dogs were randomly and equally allocated into control and PICC groups.

Procedure: Control dogs had VCM analysis on whole blood following direct venipuncture before sedation (T0) and 2 h after sedation (T2).

2024 RECOVER Guidelines: Methods, evidence identification, evaluation, and consensus process for development of treatment recommendations.

Objective: To describe the methodology used by the Reassessment Campaign on Veterinary Resuscitation (RECOVER) to re-evaluate the scientific evidence relevant to CPR in small and large animals, to newborn resuscitation, and to first aid and to formulate the respective consensus-based clinical guidelines.

Design: This report describes the evidence-to-guidelines process employed by RECOVER that is based on the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approach and includes Information Specialist-driven systematic literature search, evidence evaluation conducted by more than 200 veterinary professionals, and provision of clinical guidelines in the domains of Preparedness and Prevention, Basic Life Support, Advanced Life Support, Post-cardiac Arrest Care, Newborn Resuscitation, First Aid, and Large Animal CPR.

Setting: Transdisciplinary, international collaboration in academia, referral practice, and general practice.

A 2-year-old Holstein cow weighing 530 kg at 2 mo gestation was scheduled for a paracostal laparotomy and abomasotomy following diagnosis of a reticular foreign body causing obstruction and abomasal impaction. Hemorrhagic shock occurred during surgery, with a rapid, approximately 60% decrease in arterial blood pressure, and reflex tachycardia with a 2-fold increase in heart rate. Following identification of hemorrhagic shock, arterial blood pressure was supported by reducing the inhalant anesthetic requirement, positive inotropic support (IV dobutamine infusion), and IV fluid therapy.

A 6-year-old neutered male giant schnauzer dog was presented to an emergency clinic with stranguria and pollakiuria. On physical examination, the abdomen was generally and non-painfully distended. Diagnostic imaging revealed several large, anechoic, fluid-filled, space-occupying lesions from the cranial to caudal abdomen placing extramural pressure on the bladder and urethra and apparently causing the clinical signs.

Obstructive struvite ureterolithiasis in 4-month-old intact male Bernese mountain dog.

A 4-month-old, 7 kg, intact male, Bernese mountain dog was presented for obstructive struvite ureterolithiasis. Multiple urethroliths, ureteroliths, and urocystoliths were present. Based on an abdominal ultrasound, there was severe left hydronephrosis and hydroureter from distal ureterolith obstruction, just proximal to the vesicoureteral junction.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to describe the seroprevalence, presenting complaint, clinicopathological changes, co-morbidities and outcomes of feline leukemia virus positive cats presented to a specialty referral center in Florida, USA.

Methods: In this retrospective study, medical records of 8050 cats presented to a private referral center from August 2008 to September 2019 were reviewed. Inclusion criteria required was a positive result for feline leukemia virus by point-of-care antigen testing or immunofluorescence assay.

Four cases of a rare melanotic variant of malignant nerve sheath tumour (MNST) in dogs are described. All four cases presented with neurological clinical signs due to multicentric, intradural, intra- and extraparenchymal neoplasms that surrounded the spinal and cranial nerves and infiltrated the adjacent spinal cord and brain. The dogs were young (3 months to 3 years of age), all were female and four different breeds were represented.
