Fructose is a valuable and healthy nutrient when consumed at normal levels (≤50 g/day). However, long-term consumption of excessive fructose and elevated endogenous production can have detrimental health impacts. Fructose-initiated nonenzymatic glycation (fructation) is considered as one of the most likely mechanisms leading to the generation of reactive species and the propagation of nonenzymatic processes.

Trillions of various microorganisms inhabit the human intestine whilst having myriads of effects on the body. They participate in the metabolism of nutrients, support the work of the immune system, regulate operation of the nervous system, and produce vitamins, short-chain fatty acids, and a number of other compounds necessary for the host. An imbalance or disruption in the normal microbial community is called dysbacteriosis or dysbiosis.

Alternative NADH dehydrogenase, also known as type II NADH dehydrogenase (NDH-2), catalyzes the same redox reaction as mitochondrial respiratory chain complex I. Specifically, it oxidizes reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) while simultaneously reducing ubiquinone to ubiquinol. However, unlike complex I, this enzyme is non-proton pumping, comprises of a single subunit, and is resistant to rotenone.

Spinel ferrites demonstrate extensive applications in different areas, like electrodes for electrochemical devices, gas sensors, catalysts, and magnetic adsorbents for environmentally important processes. However, defects in the real spinel structure can change the many physical and chemical properties of spinel ferrites. Although the number of defects in a crystal spinel lattice is small, their influence on the vast majority of physical properties could be really decisive.

A large concentration gradient originating from sluggish ion transport on the surface of Zn metal anodes will result in uneven Zn flux, giving rise to severe dendrite growth, especially at high current density. Herein, an ion acceleration layer is introduced by a facile separator engineering strategy to realize modulated Zn flux and dendrite-free deposition. Zinc hexacyanoferrate as the modifying agent featuring strong zincophilicity and rapid diffusion tunnel can enable fast trap for Zn near the electrode surface and immediate transport onto deposition sites, respectively.

The study shows that the addition of gadolinium ions has a significant impact on the structure, morphology, and adsorption properties of Ni-Co spinel ferrite that was synthesized by the sol-gel auto-combustion method. The research also indicates that the higher the Gd content, the greater the increase in the lattice parameter, which suggests that Gd ions uniformly replaced the octahedral Fe ions. The morphology and chemical composition of Gd-doped Ni-Co ferrites have been studied using SEM and EDS.

The intestinal wall is a selectively permeable barrier between the content of the intestinal lumen and the internal environment of the body. Disturbances of intestinal wall permeability can potentially lead to unwanted activation of the enteric immune system due to excessive contact with gut microbiota and its components, and the development of endotoxemia, when the level of bacterial lipopolysaccharides increases in the blood, causing chronic low-intensity inflammation. In this review, the following aspects are covered: the structure of the intestinal wall barrier; the influence of the gut microbiota on the permeability of the intestinal wall via the regulation of functioning of tight junction proteins, synthesis/degradation of mucus and antioxidant effects; the molecular mechanisms of activation of the pro-inflammatory response caused by bacterial invasion through the TLR4-induced TIRAP/MyD88 and TRAM/TRIF signaling cascades; the influence of nutrition on intestinal permeability, and the influence of exercise with an emphasis on exercise-induced heat stress and hypoxia.

Chemical modification of the surface of halloysite nanotubes (HNT) by alkalization (with sodium hydroxide (NaOH)) and grafting with silanes (bis(trimethylsilyl)amine (HMDS)) was carried out. The efficiency of the alkalization and grafting process was evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the nitrogen adsorption method were used. XRD and FTIR analysis confirmed the formation of bonds of trimethylsilyl groups to the HNT surface which changed the nature of the surface from hydrophilic to hydrophobic.

Studies on antiaging remedies in insect models sometimes show discrepancies in results. These discrepancies could be explained by different responses of short- and long-lived strains on the antiaging remedies. The purpose of the study was to test whether life-prolonging effects of alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG), observed in nematodes and fruit flies, would be reproduced in long-lived Drosophila melanogaster flies.

Macronutrient intake impacts physiology, behavior, and gene expression in a wide range of organisms. We used the response surface methodology to compare how life history traits, lifespan, and reproduction differ as a function of protein and carbohydrate intakes under choice and no-choice feeding regimens in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. We found that when offered a choice of nutritionally complementary foods mated female flies regulated toward a protein to carbohydrate ratio (P:C) that was associated with shortened lifespan and maximal egg production when compared to response surfaces derived from flies fed 1 of a range of fixed diets differing in P:C (no-choice regimen).

MXenes are two-dimensional nanomaterials with unique properties that are widely used in various fields of research, mostly in the field of energy. Fewer publications are devoted to MXene application in biomedicine and the question is: are MXenes safe for use in biological systems? The sharp edges of MXenes provide the structure of "nanoknives" which cause damage in direct physical contact with cells. This is effectively used for antibacterial research.

Caloric restriction (CR) is proposed as a strategy to prevent age-related alterations like impaired glucose metabolism and intensification of oxidative stress. In this study, we examined effects of aging and CR on the activities of glycolytic enzymes and parameters of oxidative stress in the cerebral cortex, liver, and kidney of middle-aged (9 months old) and old (18 months old) C57BL6/N mice. Control middle-aged and old mice were fed ad libitum (AL groups), whereas age-matched CR groups were subjected to CR (70% of individual ad libitum food intake) for 6 and 12 months, respectively.

Consumption of high-calorie diets leads to excessive accumulation of storage lipids in adipose tissue. Metabolic changes occur not only in adipose tissue but in other tissues, too, such as liver, heart, muscle, and brain. This study aimed to explore the effects of high-fat high-fructose diet (HFFD) alone and in the combination with alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG), a well-known cellular metabolite, on energy metabolism in the skeletal muscle of C57BL/6J mice.
