Dopamine and glutamate in schizophrenia: biology, symptoms and treatment.

World Psychiatry

February 2020

Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King's College London, London, UK.

Glutamate and dopamine systems play distinct roles in terms of neuronal signalling, yet both have been proposed to contribute significantly to the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. In this paper we assess research that has implicated both systems in the aetiology of this disorder. We examine evidence from post-mortem, preclinical, pharmacological and in vivo neuroimaging studies.

African Americans report greater contamination aversion than European Americans. Few studies have attempted to identify potential causes for this elevated contamination aversion, though existing research and theory suggests this may be partly due to concomitant heightened disgust sensitivity. The present study examined the relations between race, disgust sensitivity, and contamination aversion among African and European Americans.

This study explored patterns of clinical need among homeless individuals with dual diagnoses, and explored whether certain profiles are characteristic of different demographic groups. Data were drawn from two larger studies conducted with dually diagnosed, homeless individuals (n = 373). Hierarchical cluster analysis identified four subgroups: (1) Clinically least severe, characterized by less frequent psychological symptoms and no history of physical or sexual abuse; (2) Moderate clinical needs, including shorter history of substance use and less frequent psychological symptoms, but symptoms consistent with severe mental illness; (3) Clinically severe, with frequent anxiety, depression, past and recent physical or sexual abuse, and long history of substance use; (4) Least frequent psychological symptoms, but frequent history of physical or sexual abuse and long history of drug use.

g South Central Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center, Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System , New Orleans , Louisiana , USA.

To improve understanding of the screening, triage, and referral processes within social determinant of health-Electronic Medical Record (EMR) integration, we explored how Veterans connect with needed resources following screening for housing instability using three data sources: administrative Homelessness Screening Clinical Reminder (HSCR) data, administrative Supportive Services for Veterans Families (SSVF) data, and chart review data. The cohort included Veterans who had responded to the HSCR in the 90 days prior to presenting for SSVF services between October 2012 and 2015 (N = 134); chart reviews were abstracted for a sample (n = 53). Most Veterans who presented for SSVF services had screened negative for housing instability (68.

Preventing Harm From Fluoroscopically Guided Interventional Procedures With a Risk-Based Analysis Approach.

J Am Coll Radiol

September 2019

VA National Center for Patient Safety, Ann Arbor, Michigan; Department of Radiation Oncology, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan and VA National Center for Patient Safety, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Electronic address:

Purpose: Fluoroscopically guided interventional (FGI) procedures often have lower complication rates compared with alternative surgical procedures, providing an option for patients with a high risk of perioperative mortality. Although severe radiation injuries are rare, patients receiving peak skin doses exceeding 3 Gy can suffer from radiation-induced tissue injuries, ranging from transient erythema to nonhealing wounds. As these iatrogenic injuries may manifest weeks to months postprocedure, proper diagnosis and timely medical intervention are less likely.

Trauma-related rumination is a cognitive style characterized by repetitive negative thinking about the causes, consequences, and implications of a traumatic experience. Frequent trauma-related rumination has been linked to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression in civilian samples but has yet to be examined among military veterans. This study extended previous research by examining trauma-related rumination in female veterans who presented to a Veterans Affairs women's trauma recovery clinic (N = 91).

Allopregnanolone and pregnanolone (together termed allo + pregnan) are neurosteroid metabolites of progesterone that equipotently facilitate the action of gamma-amino-butyric acid (GABA) at GABA receptors. The adrenal steroid dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) allosterically antagonizes GABA receptors and facilitates N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor function. In prior research, premenopausal women with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) displayed low cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of allo + pregnan [undifferentiated by the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method used] that correlated strongly and negatively with PTSD reexperiencing and negative mood symptoms.

Objective: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are commonly occurring and frequently comorbid disorders. Though individuals with SAD and MDD are more likely to engage in rumination and worry, relatively few studies have compared individuals with SAD, MDD, or both disorders on their use of these cognitive styles. Similarly, the extent to which the disorders differ in their use of reappraisal remains unclear.
