Glaucoma is a common optic neuropathy characterized by degeneration of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), that is, ocular hypertension, is the primary modifiable risk factor for glaucoma and the primary characteristic of most preclinical glaucoma models. This review focuses on the mechanisms of transcriptional control of an important multidrug efflux pump system (MtrCDE) possessed by , the aetiological agent of the sexually transmitted infection termed gonorrhoea. The operon that encodes this tripartite protein efflux pump is subject to both - and -acting transcriptional factors that negatively or positively influence expression. Critically, levels of MtrCDE can influence levels of gonococcal susceptibility to classical antibiotics, host-derived antimicrobials and various biocides.

Eleven Vietnam veterans with war-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were randomly assigned to 10 sessions of either virtual reality exposure (VRE) therapy within a computer-generated virtual Vietnam environment or present-centered therapy (PCT) that avoided traumatic content and utilized a problem-solving approach. Participants were assessed at pretreatment, posttreatment, and 6 months posttreatment by an independent assessor blind to treatment condition. Nine participants completed treatment with one dropout per condition.

Group-based exposure therapy (GBET) was field-tested with 102 veterans with war-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Nine to 11 patients attended 3 hours of group therapy per day twice weekly for 16-18 weeks. Stress management and a minimum of 60 hours of exposure was included (3 hours of within-group war-trauma presentations per patient, 30 hours of listening to recordings of patient's own war-trauma presentations and 27 hours of hearing other patients' war-trauma presentations).

Resistance of Neisseria gonorrhoeae to antimicrobial hydrophobic agents (HAs) has been ascribed to the mtr (multiple transferable resistance) operon. This operon is composed of the mtrR gene, which encodes a transcriptional repressor (MtrR), and a three-gene complex (mtrCDE), which encodes cell envelope proteins (MtrC-MtrD-MtrE) that form an energy-dependent efflux pump. HA-hypersusceptible strains are often isolated from patients, but the genetic basis for such hypersusceptibility was heretofore unknown.

The mtr (multiple transferable resistance) system of Neisseria gonorrhoeae mediates resistance of gonococci to structurally diverse hydrophobic agents (HAs) through an energy-dependent efflux process. Recently, complete or partial ORFs that encode membrane proteins (MtrC, MtrD, MtrE) forming an efflux pump responsible for removal of HAs from gonococci were identified and appeared to constitute a single transcriptional unit. In this study, the complete nucleotide sequence of the mtrD gene was determined, permitting the characterization of the MtrD protein.
