Introduction: There has been a previous case report of peri-arrest muscle rigidity in the setting of severe salicylate poisoning (serum salicylate concentration 1,500 mg/L), described as paratonia or rapid rigor mortis. We present an image of rapid rigor mortis in another fatal salicylate poisoning.
Case Summary: We report a 42-year-old male with severe salicylate poisoning (peak salicylate concentration 1,600 mg/L).

Introduction: Scientific societies aim to provide a collective voice and unified stance on important issues. The Clinical Toxicology Recommendations Collaborative was formed in 2016 to develop evidence- and consensus-based recommendations for the management of patients exposed to common and/or serious poisonings for which the management is unclear or controversial.
Organization: The Clinical Toxicology Recommendations Collaborative is led jointly by the American Academy of Clinical Toxicology, the Asia Pacific Association of Medical Toxicology, and the European Association of Poison Centres and Clinical Toxicologists.

There are known disparities in chronic pain severity, treatment, and opioid-related risks amongst individuals from lower socioeconomic status, including Medicaid beneficiaries, but little is known about whether Medicaid beneficiaries benefit in a similar way from multidisciplinary chronic pain rehabilitation. This study investigated differences in clinical outcomes between Medicaid and non-Medicaid beneficiaries who completed a 3-week multidisciplinary chronic pain rehabilitation program. Participants ( = 131) completed a broad range of clinical measures pre- and post-treatment including pain severity, pain interference, depression, anxiety, objective physical functioning, and opioid misuse risk.

Plastic pollution continues to erupt as a global ecological concern. As plastic debris is degraded into nanoscale and microscale particles via biodegradation, UV-irradiation, and mechanical processes, nanoplastic pollution arises as a threat to virtually every biological and ecological system on the planet. In this study, zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos were exposed to fluorescently labeled plastic particles at nanoscales (30 nm and 100 nm).

Emotion work is a regulatory method used to change the degree or quality of one's own or another's emotions. Among sexual minority people, emotion work is a regulatory method utilised to maximise identity expression while maintaining harmony in interpersonal connections. However, little is known about the utilisation of emotion work among transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people.

Brainstem cavernous malformations are benign subset of cerebral cavernous malformations, which need a special intervention owing to being vital and complex. The diffusion tensor imaging technique, a well-recognized neuroimaging tool, can visualize the white matter tracts and their surroundings and provide promising surgical outcomes. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the effect of preoperative diffusion tensor imaging in patients undergoing surgical resection of brainstem cavernous malformations.

Euglenoids (Euglenida) are unicellular flagellates possessing exceptionally wide geographical and ecological distribution. Euglenoids combine a biotechnological potential with a unique position in the eukaryotic tree of life. In large part these microbes owe this success to diverse genetics including secondary endosymbiosis and likely additional sources of genes.

Objectives: This study examined ninety-day and one-year postoperative healthcare utilization and costs following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) from the health sector and patient perspectives.
Design: This study relied on: 1) patient-reported medical resource utilization data from diaries in the Knee Arthroplasty Pain Coping Skills Training (KASTPain) trial; and 2) Medicare fee schedules. Medicare payments, patient cost-sharing, and patient time costs were estimated.

Twin studies show the established relation between bulimic symptoms and problematic alcohol involvement in adult females is partly due to shared familial factors, specifically shared genetic effects. However, it is unclear if similar shared etiological factors exist during adolescence or in males. We examined the familial overlap (i.

Objective: To examine the perceived importance of needs and the extent to which they are met among a sample of family members in an inpatient polytrauma setting.
Method: The Family Needs Questionnaire was administered to 44 family members of patients at the Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center at McGuire Veterans Affairs Medical Center over a 30-month period.
Results: Families rated health information needs as most important and most frequently met.

Objective: This study investigated the psychometric properties of the Frontal Systems Behavior Scale (FrSBe) in an acute traumatic brain injury (TBI) population across indices of factor structure, reliability, and validity.
Method: Data were collected from 101 individuals undergoing acute rehabilitation for moderate and severe TBI both upon emergence from posttraumatic amnesia and at hospital discharge, as well as from their family members or caregivers.
Results: Four separate confirmatory factor analyses (CFAs) suggested that the FrSBe's three-factor/three-subscale solution did not fit the data well, and follow-up CFAs employing a one-factor structure similarly yielded poor fit indices.

Objectives: The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends objective testing with polysomnography (PSG) before adenotonsillectomy for sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in children. Several studies have also shown that a clinical diagnosis correlates poorly with the presence or severity of SDB as confirmed by PSG. The purpose of this study was to examine surgical practice patterns among members of the American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngologists (ASPO).

Objective: To quantify discrepancies in the diagnosis of olfactory function that might exist when comparing results obtained from centers using different methods of olfactory testing.
Study Design: Prospective study of 50 healthy adult volunteers and 25 adult patients with olfactory complaints.
Methods: Two test methods, the Connecticut Chemosensory Clinical Research Center (CCCRC) test widely used in the United States, and the Jet Stream Olfactometer (JSO) test used in Japan, were used to measure and categorize the diagnostic level of olfactory function (normosmia, mild hyposmia, moderate hyposmia, severe hyposmia, anosmia).

Hypothesis: Implementation of Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) duty hour standards has had limited effects on resident training in otolaryngology.
Study Design: Retrospective survey of residents and residency program directors (PDs).
Methods: Surveys were mailed to residents and PDs in otolaryngology asking about compliance with ACGME duty hour standards and perceptions of changes brought on by the new regulations.

Pathogenic Naegleria fowleri amebae are resistant to the lytic effects of serum complement. The presence of surface glycoproteins or removal of the membrane attack complex (MAC) of complement from the cell surface by vesiculation serve to protect the amebae from complement lysis. The specific mediators important in stimulating complement resistance are not defined.

The requirements and trade-offs between accuracy and speed for radiotherapy dose computations have been discussed for decades. Inverse planning used for intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) optimization imposes additional demands on dose calculation since it is an iterative process in which dose calculations might be repeated many (10's to 1000's) of times. This work discusses the accuracy and speed issues as related to IMRT dose calculations.
