A series of symmetric pentamethine cyanine dyes derived from various N-substituted benzothiazolium/benzoselenazolium salts, and a conjugated bis-aniline derivative containing a chlorine atom at meso-position with respect to the polymethine chain, were synthesized using a novel improved synthetic approach under mild conditions at room temperature. The reaction procedure was held by grinding the starting compounds for relative short times. The novel method is reliable and highly reproducible.

As spermatozoon motility duration differs significantly among fish species, the mechanism of ATP generation-regeneration and its distribution along the flagellum may be species-dependent. The present study compared the role of creatine kinase (CK) with that of adenylate kinase (AK) in ATP regeneration during motility of demembranated spermatozoa of taxonomically distant fish species, sterlet, and common carp, allowing investigation for the presence of the creatine-phosphocreatine (PCr) shuttle in sterlet spermatozoa. The flagellar beat frequency of demembranated spermatozoa was measured in reactivating media in the presence or absence of ATP, ADP, PCr, and CK and AK inhibitors.

Electron energy distribution in a dusty plasma: analytical approach.

Analytical expressions describing the electron energy distribution function (EEDF) in a dusty plasma are obtained from the homogeneous Boltzmann equation for electrons. The expressions are derived neglecting electron-electron collisions, as well as transformation of high-energy electrons into low-energy electrons at inelastic electron-atom collisions. At large electron energies, the quasiclassical approach for calculation of the EEDF is applied.

Control of Carbon Nanotube Electronic Properties by Lithium Cation Intercalation.

We show that the electronic properties of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) can be tuned continuously from semiconducting to metallic by varying the location of ions inside the tubes. Focusing on the Li(+) cation inside the (26,0) zigzag semiconducting and (15,15) armchair metallic SWCNTs, we found that the Li(+)-SWCNT interaction is attractive. The interaction is stronger for the metallic SWCNT, indicating in particular that metallic tubes can enhance performance of lithium-ion batteries.

A new 3D implementation of a hybrid model based on the analogy with two-phase hydrodynamics has been developed for the simulation of liquids at microscale. The idea of the method is to smoothly combine the atomistic description in the molecular dynamics zone with the Landau-Lifshitz fluctuating hydrodynamics representation in the rest of the system in the framework of macroscopic conservation laws through the use of a single "zoom-in" user-defined function s that has the meaning of a partial concentration in the two-phase analogy model. In comparison with our previous works, the implementation has been extended to full 3D simulations for a range of atomistic models in GROMACS from argon to water in equilibrium conditions with a constant or a spatially variable function s.

Apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I) is an amyloid-forming protein whose amyloidogenic properties are attributed mainly to its N-terminal fragment. Cell membranes are thought to be the primary target for the toxic amyloid aggregates. This paper presents the development of a magnetized retarding field energy analyzer (MRFEA) used for positive and negative ion analysis. The two-stage analyzer combines a magnetic electron barrier and an electrostatic ion energy barrier allowing both positive and negative ions to be analyzed without the influence of electrons (co-extracted or created downstream). An optimal design of the MRFEA for ion-ion beams has been achieved by a comparative study of three different MRFEA configurations, and from this, scaling laws of an optimal magnetic field strength and topology have been deduced.

The formation of the textures on the surface of the films from the solutions of bovine serum albumin (BSA) with sodium halides (NaF, NaCl, and NaBr) of various concentrations was studied. The formation of symmetric zigzag textures on the surface of BSA films (Cryst Eng 3:173-194, 2000) in the presence of sodium halides depends on the conformational state of the protein globule. Thermal denaturation of BSA also did not allow to form zigzag textures on the surface of the films.

Incompatibilities between parental genomes decrease viability of interspecific hybrids; however, deviations from canonical gametogenesis such as genome endoreplication and elimination can rescue hybrid organisms. To evaluate frequency and regularity of genome elimination and endoreplication during gametogenesis in hybrid animals with different ploidy, we examined genome composition in oocytes of di- and triploid hybrid frogs of the Pelophylax esculentus complex. Obtained results allowed us to suggest that during oogenesis the endoreplication involves all genomes occurring before the selective genome elimination.

Cerebrolysin® (CBL) is a neuroprotective drug used for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. CBL's mechanisms of action remain unclear. Involvement of tryptophan (TRP)-kynurenine (KYN) pathway in neuroprotective effect of CBL might be suggested considering that modulation of KYN pathway of TRP metabolism by CBL, and protection against eclosion defect and prolongation of life span of Drosophila melanogaster with pharmacologically or genetically-induced down-regulation of TRP conversion into KYN.

A recent bottleneck of Y chromosome diversity coincides with a global change in culture.

It is commonly thought that human genetic diversity in non-African populations was shaped primarily by an out-of-Africa dispersal 50-100 thousand yr ago (kya). Here, we present a study of 456 geographically diverse high-coverage Y chromosome sequences, including 299 newly reported samples. Applying ancient DNA calibration, we date the Y-chromosomal most recent common ancestor (MRCA) in Africa at 254 (95% CI 192-307) kya and detect a cluster of major non-African founder haplogroups in a narrow time interval at 47-52 kya, consistent with a rapid initial colonization model of Eurasia and Oceania after the out-of-Africa bottleneck.

The switchable three-component reactions of 5-amino-3-methylisoxazole, salicylaldehyde and N-aryl-3-oxobutanamides under different conditions were studied and discussed. The unexpected influence of the aryl substituent in N-aryl-3-oxobutanamides on the behavior of the reaction was discovered. The key influence of ultrasonication and Lewis acid catalysts led to an established protocol to selectively obtain two or three types of heterocyclic scaffolds depending on the substituent in the N-aryl moiety.

The binding of monomeric and aggregated variants of 1-83 N-terminal fragment of apolipoprotein A-I with substitution mutations G26R, G26R/W@8, G26R/W@50 and G26R/W@72 to the model lipid membranes composed of phosphatidylcholine and its mixture with cholesterol has been investigated using fluorescent probes pyrene and Laurdan. Examination of pyrene spectral behavior did not reveal any marked influence of apoA-I mutants on the hydrocarbon region of lipid bilayer. In contrast, probing the membrane effects by Laurdan revealed decrease in the probe generalized polarization in the presence of aggregated proteins.

A combination of computational and experimental methods was used to examine the structure-reactivity relationships in the reactions of C-amino-1H-1,2,4-triazoles with electrophiles. The global nucleophilicity of 3-amino- and 3,5-diamino-1H-1,2,4-triazoles was predicted to be higher than that of 5-amino-1H-1,2,4-triazoles. Fukui functions and molecular electrostatic potential indicate that reactions involving an amino group should occur more easily for the 3-amino- than for the 5-amino-1H-1,2,4-triazoles.

The complex formation of Ni(ClO4)2 and Mg(ClO4)2 with 3-hydroxyflavone (HL, flavonol) in acetonitrile was studied using conductometric and spectroscopic methods. It was found that interaction of nickel cation with HL leads to formation of the doubly charged [Ni(HL)](2+) complex, whereas in solutions of magnesium perchlorate the complex with anion [MgClO4(HL)](+) is formed. Using the extended Lee-Wheaton equation, the limiting equivalent conductivities of [Ni(HL)](2+) and [MgClO4(HL)](+) and thermodynamic constants of their formation were obtained at 288, 298, 308, 318, and 328 K.

Ancient human genomes suggest three ancestral populations for present-day Europeans.

We sequenced the genomes of a ∼7,000-year-old farmer from Germany and eight ∼8,000-year-old hunter-gatherers from Luxembourg and Sweden. We analysed these and other ancient genomes with 2,345 contemporary humans to show that most present-day Europeans derive from at least three highly differentiated populations: west European hunter-gatherers, who contributed ancestry to all Europeans but not to Near Easterners; ancient north Eurasians related to Upper Palaeolithic Siberians, who contributed to both Europeans and Near Easterners; and early European farmers, who were mainly of Near Eastern origin but also harboured west European hunter-gatherer related ancestry. We model these populations' deep relationships and show that early European farmers had ∼44% ancestry from a 'basal Eurasian' population that split before the diversification of other non-African lineages.

For successful fertilization, spermatozoa must access, bind, and penetrate an egg, processes for which activation of spermatozoa motility is a prerequisite. Fish spermatozoa are stored in seminal plasma where they are immotile during transit through the genital tract of most externally fertilizing teleosts and chondrosteans. Under natural conditions, motility is induced immediately following release of spermatozoa from the male genital tract into the aqueous environment.

The structures, processes of shrinkage, and phase composition of the compact system ZrO2-WC, obtained by hot pressing with the transmission of high current, are considered in the article. We found that as a result of compaction, the ZrO2-WC-ceramics have uniform density distribution, with the following optimal mode consolidation values T = 1,350°C, P = 30 MPa and t = 2 min. These conditions allow us to achieve the best combination of ceramic properties by criteria density and strength.
