Department of Neuro-Urology, Balgrist University Hospital, University of Zürich, 8008 Zürich, Switzerland.

Article Synopsis
  • * Key gaps in research include understanding the impacts of NLUTD on sexual and bowel function, assessing renal function in those with limited mobility, and establishing effective guidelines for low-resource settings.
  • * The authors advocate for a global, unified approach to develop comprehensive, resource-independent guidelines for NLUTD and related issues, highlighting the need for targeted research to address existing evidence gaps.

Objectives: To compare monopolar transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), bipolar TURP and photoselective vaporization of the prostate (PVP) by 120-W GreenLight laser with regard to the impact on International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF)-5 score in patients presenting with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) secondary to prostate >80 mL.

Methods: Between April 2012 and March 2015, 110 patients who satisfied eligibility criteria were divided into three groups according to surgical modality adopted to treat benign prostatic enlargement. Preoperative, perioperative, and follow-up data were collected.

Objectives: To assess durability of efficacy of monopolar transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), bipolar TURP, and photoselective vaporization of the prostate (PVP) using 120W Green light laser at 36 months follow up.

Method: The 186 patients who presented with benign prostatic obstruction and planned for surgery were randomized into three groups: Group A - monopolar TURP; group B - bipolar TURP; and group C - PVP. International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), International Index of Erectile Function-5 (IIEF-5) score, quality of life (QoL) score, maximum flow rate (Qmax), prostate volume and postvoid residual urine (PVRU) were analyzed up to 36 months follow up.

A 54-year-old male chronic smoker presented with hematuria 13 years after being diagnosed with an asymptomatic left non-functioning kidney secondary to congenital ureteropelvic junction obstruction. On evaluation, he was diagnosed with renal collecting system mass occupying the lower pole region, for which radical nephroureterectomy with bladder cuff excision and nodal dissection was carried out. Histopathology revealed upper tract transitional cell carcinoma.

Objective: To prospectively assess safety outcome of TRUS guided prostate biopsy in patients taking low dose aspirin.

Materials And Methods: Consecutive patients, who were planned for 12 core TRUS guided prostate biopsy and satisfied eligibility criteria, were included in the study and divided into two Groups: Group A: patients on aspirin during biopsy, Group B: patients not on aspirin during biopsy, including patients in whom aspirin was stopped prior to the biopsy. Parameters included for statistical analysis were: age, serum prostate specific antigen (PSA), prostate volume, hemoglobin (Hb %), number of hematuria episodes, number of patient reporting hematuria, hematuria requiring intervention, number of patient reporting hematospermia and number of patient reporting rectal bleeding.

Objective: To compare short term efficacy and safety of channel photoselective vaporization of prostate (PVP) and channel transurethral resection of prostate (TURP) in patients with bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) secondary to advanced carcinoma prostate.

Methods: This prospective, non-randomized comparative study was conducted between April 2012 and December 2014. Patients with locally advanced/metastatic carcinoma prostate, who underwent either channel PVP or channel TURP for troublesome LUTS/ acute retention of urine were included in the study.

Introduction: Two-port mini laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) has been proposed as a safe and feasible technique. However, there are limited studies to evaluate the effectiveness of the procedure. This study is a prospective randomised trial to compare the standard four-port LC with two-port mini LC.

Purpose: A prospective, randomized comparison of shock wave lithotripsy, retrograde intrarenal surgery and miniperc for the treatment of 1 to 2 cm radiolucent lower calyceal renal calculi was done to evaluate the safety and efficacy of these procedures.

Materials And Methods: Patients with a single 1 to 2 cm radiolucent lower calyceal renal stone who underwent treatment between January 2012 and May 2013 were included in study. They were randomized to shock wave lithotripsy, retrograde intrarenal surgery and miniperc groups.

Aim: Objective of the present study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of photoselective vaporization of the prostate (PVP) using a 80W potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) laser, in benign prostatic enlargement (BPE) patients who were on ongoing anticoagulant therapy during the perioperative period.

Methods: Prospectively collected laser prostatectomy patient database of our hospital for the period between July 2009-Jan 2012 was retrospectively reviewed. Data on perioperative safety, functional outcome and complications up to follow-up at 6 months of 45 eligible patients who underwent PVP-KTP and were on perioperative anticoagulant therapy (study group) was compared with 47 eligible patients who underwent PVP-KTP and were not on perioperative anticoagulant therapy (control group).

Aims: To comprehensively review factors implicated in the pathogenesis of urinary tract infection in patients with neurogenic bladders, and to stimulate research, especially in the somewhat ignored and forgotten areas of this important clinical subject.

Methods: In addition to reviewing relevant articles on pubmed, some important articles from previous times which were not available online were also procured and reviewed.

Results: Intrinsic defence mechanisms including protective flora, anti-adherence mechanisms, urothelial, and immunological responses to bacterial binding and the blood supply to the urinary bladder may be impaired in patients with neurogenic bladders.

Vitiligo, characterized by depigmented macules is a common disorder with a high psychosocial impact, particularly in darker skins. Surgical methods become important in cases where medical therapy fails to cause repigmentation or in cases of segmental vitiligo where the response to surgery is excellent. The basic principle of surgical treatment is autologous grafting of viable melanocytes from pigmented donor skin to recipient vitiliginous areas.

Introduction: The incidence of bladder malignancy is increasing worldwide and the projected rise is 28% by 2010 for both sexes (according to the WHO). Though intravesical adjuvant therapy with bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is superior to any other immunotherapeutic/chemotherapeutic agent in reducing tumor recurrences and disease progression, its real efficacy remains controversial as one-third of the patients will soon develop BCG failure. Hence, there is a need for an alternative intravesical agent for treatment of BCG failure.

Eccrine hidrocystomas are rare, benign, cystic lesions with a lining that resembles that of the eccrine sweat gland and may be solitary or multiple. Multiple eccrine hidrocystomas occur predominantly on the face as asymptomatic, skin-colored to bluish lesions associated with a chronic course and seasonal variability. Treatment of multiple lesions on the face is challenging.
