Introduction: Non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C) levels can increase the cardiometabolic risk factors in patients with hypothyroidism, but the findings across studies have not been consistently conclusive. The aim of this study was to find the association between non-HDL-C and cardiometabolic risk factors in patients with hypothyroidism.

Material And Methods: In this case-control study, a total of 120 subjects among which 60 diagnosed hypothyroidism patients and 60 age-matched healthy controls were enrolled, aged 30-65 years.

Quadricuspid aortic valve (QAV), a rare congenital cardiac anomaly, often presents with aortic regurgitation and can lead to significant cardiovascular complications. This case report describes a 55-year-old male with a history of subarachnoid hemorrhage who was incidentally found to have QAV with possible endocarditis. Transesophageal echocardiography revealed thickened leaflet tips on all four cusps and a mass on one leaflet, raising suspicion of endocarditis despite the absence of vegetation.

The chytrid Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) is a widespread fungus causing amphibian declines across the globe. Although data on Bd occurrence in Eastern Europe are scarce, a recent species distribution model (SDM) for Bd reported that western and north-western parts of Ukraine are highly suitable to the pathogen. We verified the SDM-predicted range of Bd in Ukraine by sampling amphibians across the country and screening for Bd using qPCR.

By one-pot four- and three-component Ugi reactions involving convertible isocyanides and unexplored pyrrole-containing β-chlorovinylaldehyde, a small library of 20 bisamides with unusual behavior in post-Ugi transformations was prepared and characterized. Surprisingly, a well-documented approach to obtain peptide-containing carboxylic acids through acid hydrolysis of the convertible isocyanide moiety in the Ugi bisamides proceeded in an unexpected manner in our case, leading to the formation of derivatives of amides of heterylidenepyruvic acid. An optimized synthetic protocol for this transformation was elaborated and a plausible sequence involving the elimination of the 2-chloroacetamide moiety and the conversion of the β-chlorovinyl fragment into a vinyl one is provided.

  • Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder triggered by gluten, and this study examines its potential genetic connections to other inflammatory diseases like asthma and eczema.
  • Using a method called two-sample Mendelian randomization, researchers analyzed data from various genetic studies and found weak associations between celiac disease and conditions like atopic dermatitis and asthma.
  • While the study found some statistically significant correlations, the practical effects are minimal, suggesting that these connections might not have important clinical implications and further research may not be necessary right now.

August 2024

Enamine Ltd. (www.enamine.net), Winston Churchill Street 78, Kyiv 02094, Ukraine.

Enzymatic site-specific bioconjugation techniques, in particular sortase-mediated ligation, are increasingly used to generate conjugated proteins for a wide array of applications. Extension of the utility and practicality of sortagging for diverse purposes is critically dependent on further improvement of the efficiency of sortagging reactions with a wider structural variety of substrates. We present a comprehensive comparative mass spectrometry screening study of synthetic nonpeptidic incoming amine nucleophile substrates of Sortase A enzyme.

This study investigates the phase composition, microstructure, and their influence on the properties of Mo-W-C nanocomposite films deposited by dual-source magnetron sputtering. The synthesised films consist of metal carbide nanograins embedded in an amorphous carbon matrix. It has been found that nanograins are composed of the hexagonal β-(Mo + W)C phase at a low carbon source power.

Dr. Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research, International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences, University of Karachi, Karachi, 75270, Pakistan. Electronic address:

Despite the waning threat of the COVID-19 pandemic, its detrimental impact on global health persists. Regardless of natural immunity or immunity obtained through vaccination, emerging variants of the virus continue to undergo mutations and propagate globally. The persistent mutations in SARS-CoV-2, along with the subsequent formation of recombinant sub-variants has become a challenge for researchers and health professionals, raising concerns about the efficacy of current vaccines.

Laboratoire de Chimie de Coordination du CNRS, 205 Route de Narbonne, F-31077 Toulouse, France.

A ruthenium nitrosyl complex of formula [Ru(fluorene(C6)CHO-terpy)(bipy)(NO)] (AC) in which fluorene(C6) is the 9,9-dihexylfluorene, terpy the 2,2';6',2''-terpyridine, and bipy the 2,2'-bipyridine is presented with its related [Ru(MeO-terpy)(bipy)(NO)] (C) and 9,9-dihexylfluorene 2-hydroxymethylfluorene (A) building blocks. The reference complex C undergoes NO release capabilities under irradiation at = 365 nm. The effect of the introduction of the fluorescent A antenna within the resulting AC complex is discussed both experimentally and theoretically.

The main cysteine protease (M) of coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 has become a promising target for computational development in anti-COVID-19 treatments. Here, we benchmarked the performance of six biomolecular molecular dynamics (MD) force fields (OPLS-AA, CHARMM27, CHARMM36, AMBER03, AMBER14SB and GROMOS G54A7) and three water models (TIP3P, TIP4P and SPC) for reproducing the native fold and the enzymatic activity of M as monomeric and dimeric units. The MD sampling up to 1 μs suggested that the proper choice of the force fields and water models plays an essential role in reproducing the tertiary structure and the inter-residue distance between the catalytic dyad His41-Cys145.

Hard nitride coatings are commonly employed to protect components subjected to friction, whereby such coatings should possess excellent tribomechanical properties in order to endure high stresses and temperatures. In this study, WN/NbN coatings are synthesized by using the cathodic-arc evaporation (CA-PVD) technique at various negative bias voltages in the 50-200 V range. The phase composition, microstructural features, and tribomechanical properties of the multilayers are comprehensively studied.

THE EFFECT OF MELATONIN ON THE SERUM LEVEL OF INTERLEUKIN 31 IN HERPESVIRUS SKIN DISEASES ON THE BACKGROUND OF HIV.

Georgian Med News

February 2024

V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, Department of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Immunology, School of Medicine, Ukraine.

The immune system of the skin is the first line of defense against various infections, on the other hand, its strategic location as a key barrier between external and internal environment makes the skin an important tool for maintaining homeostasis, so dermatological lesions are often a manifestation of various pathological conditions. Thus, herpesvirus skin diseases, which are the result of reactivation of a latent infection and occur against the background of human immunodeficiency, may be the first manifestation of HIV. Active study of melatonin in recent years in the dermatological field is associated with interest in its biological action, which extends to the skin due to the melatoninergic system, and promising prospects for the development of new treatments.

Background: In the context of climate change, a growing concern is that vector-pathogen or host-parasite interactions may be correlated with climatic factors, especially increasing temperatures. In the present study, we used a mosquito-microsporidian model to determine the impact of environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, wind and rainfall on the occurrence rates of opportunistic obligate microparasites (Microsporidia) in hosts from a family that includes important disease vectors (Culicidae).

Methods: In our study, 3000 adult mosquitoes collected from the field over 3 years were analysed.

Infectious diseases are influenced by interactions between host and pathogen, and the number of infected hosts is rarely homogenous across the landscape. Areas with elevated pathogen prevalence can maintain a high force of infection and may indicate areas with disease impacts on host populations. However, isolating the ecological processes that result in increases in infection prevalence and intensity remains a challenge.
