Adult rats exposed to hyperoxia (>95% O) die from respiratory failure in 60-72 h. However, rats preconditioned with >95% O for 48 h followed by 24 h in room air acquire tolerance of hyperoxia (H-T), whereas rats preconditioned with 60% O for 7 days become more susceptible (H-S). Our objective was to evaluate lung tissue mitochondrial bioenergetics in H-T and H-S rats.

MicroRNAs (miRNA) in extracellular vesicles and particles (EVPs) in maternal circulation during pregnancy and in human milk postpartum are hypothesized to facilitate maternal-offspring communication via epigenetic regulation. However, factors influencing maternal EVP miRNA profiles during these two critical developmental windows remain largely unknown. Photosensitivity can be due to numerous causes. The photosensitivity associated with deficiency of xeroderma pigmentosum type A (XPA) has been previously shown to be associated with excess levels of the lipid mediator platelet-activating factor (PAF) generated by the keratinocyte. As PAF has been reported to trigger the production of subcellular microvesicle particles (MVP) due to the enzyme acid sphingomyelinase (aSMase), the goal of these studies was to discern if PAF and aSMase could serve as therapeutic targets for the XPA deficiency photosensitivity.

Although effective in treating actinic damage, topical photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been shown to be immunosuppressive through unknown mechanisms, which could potentially limit its effectiveness. Multiple types of environmental stressors, including PDT, can produce the immunosuppressive lipid mediator platelet-activating factor (PAF). Because PAF can produce subcellular microvesicle particles (MVPs), these studies tested whether PDT can generate PAF and MVP release and whether these are involved in PDT-induced immunosuppression.

Introduction: This study was undertaken to gain mechanistic information about bone repair using the bone repletion model in aged Balb/cBy mice.

Materials And Methods: one month-old (young) mice were fed a calcium-deficient diet for 2 weeks and 8 month-old (adult) and 21-25 month-old (aged) female mice for 4 weeks during depletion, which was followed by feeding a calcium-sufficient diet for 16 days during repletion. Superior mesenteric artery (SMA) syndrome is a rare etiology of upper gastrointestinal obstruction. The measured angle between the SMA and the aorta is typically between 38 and 65° and maintained by mesenteric fat. Background: Recent reports on challenges in resuscitation care at hospitals severely affected by the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic raise questions about how the pandemic affected outcomes for in-hospital cardiac arrest throughout the United States.

Methods: Within Get With The Guidelines-Resuscitation, we conducted a retrospective cohort study to compare in-hospital cardiac arrest survival during the presurge (January 1-February 29), surge (March 1-May 15) and immediate postsurge (May 16-June 30) periods in 2020 compared to 2015 to 2019. Monthly COVID-19 mortality rates for each hospital's county were categorized, per 1 000 000 residents, as low (0-10), moderate (11-50), high (51-100), or very high (>100).

Recent studies have implicated bioactive microvesicle particles (MVP) in the keratinocyte response to many environmental stressors, in partricular ultraviolet B radiation (UVB). The generation of MVP in response to UVB involves the Platelet-activating factor receptor (PAFR) and the enzyme acid sphingomyelinase (aSMase). Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor (Nrf2) is a redox-sensitive transcription factor that responds to oxidative stress by activating expressions of key antioxidant and cytoprotective enzymes via the Nrf2-antioxidant response element (ARE) signaling pathway. Our objective was to characterize hyperoxia-induced acute lung injury (HALI) in Nrf2 knock-out (KO) rats to elucidate the role of this pathway in HALI.
