Introduction: Male infertility, defined as the inability to impregnate a fertile female, arises from various factors, among which sperm motility plays a pivotal role in determining reproductive potential. Seminal plasma, a complex fluid comprising diverse proteins, serves to nourish and support sperm, thereby facilitating their function within the female reproductive tract for successful conception. Normozoospermia denotes normal sperm motility in males, whereas asthenozoospermia indicates reduced sperm motility.

Selection of a suitable habitat by animals before settlement is critical for their survival and reproduction. In silk-spinning arthropods like spider mites, denser webs offer protection from predation and serve as a dispersal mode. Settling in habitats with the presence of conspecifics and silk webs can benefit the habitat-searching females.

Ready-to-drink protein beverages have gained attention in the functional beverage market. This study examined the possibility of using ovalbumin and its hydrolysates to develop functional protein beverages. Lyophilized ovalbumin (5%, w/v) was dissolved in distilled water (pH 10) with sugar, salt, and vanilla and pasteurized at 56.

Populations of forest trees exhibit large temporal fluctuations, but little is known about the synchrony of these fluctuations across space, including their sign, magnitude, causes and characteristic scales. These have important implications for metapopulation persistence and theoretical community ecology. Using data from permanent forest plots spanning local, regional and global spatial scales, we measured spatial synchrony in tree population growth rates over sub-decadal and decadal timescales and explored the relationship of synchrony to geographical distance.

The research examined the salivary concentrations of various biomarkers, such as OAZ1, SAT, S100P, IL-1β, and IL-8 aiming to detect early-stage oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). These biomarkers show potential as indicators for detecting both pre-cancerous and cancerous states within the oral cavity. Analyzing these specific molecules in saliva could help clinicians enhance diagnostic accuracy and refine early detection methods for OSCC.

Owing to its specialised methodology, palaeoecology is often regarded as a separate field from ecology, even though it is essential for understanding long-term ecological processes that have shaped the ecosystems that ecologists study and manage. Despite advances in ecological modelling, sample dating, and proxy-based reconstructions facilitating direct comparison of palaeoecological data with neo-ecological data, most of the scientific knowledge derived from palaeoecological studies remains siloed. We surveyed a group of palaeo-researchers with experience in crossing the divide between palaeoecology and neo-ecology, to develop Ten Simple Rules for publishing your palaeoecological research in non-palaeo journals.

The impact of dietary non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) on performance and carcass traits of broilers fed wheat-bran substituted into corn-soybean meal-based diets supplemented with xylanase was investigated. A total of 280 (7-day-old) Ross 308 broilers were randomly allotted to one of five dietary treatments with 8 replicates, 7 chicks per pen. Treatments were; i) CON: Control diet, ii) CON-X (CON + 3,000 U/kg xylanase), iii) L-X: low NSP (2% wheat bran in CON + 3,000 U/kg xylanase), iv) M-X: medium NSP (4% wheat bran in CON + 3,000 U/kg xylanase), v) H-X: higher NSP (8% wheat bran in CON+ 3,000 U/kg xylanase).

For improving the oxidative stability of a polyunsaturated oil, we co-encapsulated polyphenols from a concentrated beet by-product extract (CEB) with linseed oil using W/O/W emulsions produced through emulsification with dynamic membranes of tunable pore size (DMTS), a low-energy high-throughput emulsification technology. Emulsions were stabilized with lesser mealworm protein concentrate (LMPC) and with an LMPC-derived antioxidant emulsifier (LMPC conjugated to tannic acid (LMPC-TA)). Regarding productivity, values of transmembrane flux were high (above 100 m m h), and of industrial interest.

The yield and quality of cultivated food crops are frequently compromised by the prevalent threat from fungal pathogens that can cause widespread damage in both the pre-harvest and post-harvest stages. This paper investigates the challenges posed by fungal pathogens to the sustainability and yield of essential food crops, leading to significant economic and food security repercussions. The paper critiques the long-standing reliance on synthetic fungicides, emphasizing the environmental and health concerns arising from their widespread and occasionally inappropriate use.

Sri Lanka, a tropical island, confronts climate-driven water scarcity and is of great concern to building climate-resilient water management to achieve UN SDGs 6 and 13. This study explores the dynamic interaction between surface water (SW) and groundwater (GW) in the dry zone of Sri Lanka, employing a multi-tracer of dual stable isotopes (O and H) and chloride. Two basins, Mahakanadarawa (MK) basin with numerous village tanks and tank cascade systems (VTCSs/TCSs) and Kawudulla (KW) basin serving as a control with a lack of tanks, were selected in this study.

Owing to the growing interest in sustainable resource utilization, the current study explores the potential replacement of pectin with citrus peel powder (CP) in starch-based 3D food printing ink formulations. The effect of different concentrations of pectin (1 %, 2 %, 3 %) and CP (1 %, 2 %, 3 %) on the printing fidelity, microstructure, rheological and textural properties of potato starch gel were investigated. The results showed that the 3D printing performance of CP-added inks was higher than that of pectin-added inks at all tested concentrations.

The increase in methane emissions, a major greenhouse gas, threatens human well-being and global ecosystems due to its contribution to global warming. Livestock, particularly ruminants, have been a major research topic in recent decades due to their methane production. Therefore, the objective of the current review was to comprehensively discuss the in silico techniques used to mitigate methane production from ruminants.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a serious public health problem in various Asian countries, including Sri Lanka, and a combination of cultural practices, lifestyle factors, and genetic predispositions influences the incidence of these cancers. The examination of the connection between exposure to heavy metals and the probability of developing oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD) and OSCC has been limited in its scope, and the overall consequences of such exposure remain largely unknown. This study aims to clarify the link between serum levels of heavy metals and the risk of OSCC and OPMD.

An equibiaxial tension test could be necessary to set up hyperelastic material constants for elastomers exactly. Unfortunately, very often, only uniaxial tension experimental data are available. It is possible to use only uniaxial data to compute hyperelastic constants for a hyperelastic model, but the prediction of behavior in different deformation modes (as is equibiaxial or pure shear) will not work correctly with this model.

Groundwater is the main source of drinking water for the rural population in the chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) zone of the North Central Province (NCP) in Sri Lanka. In this study, a total of 334 groundwater samples (311 dug wells, 21 tube wells and 2 springs) during the wet season from two aquifers in the NCP were collected, and investigated their chemical characteristics and evaluate their water quality, including groundwater chemistry, main ion sources, the corrosion and scaling potential of groundwater. The results showed that the two hydrochemical types of groundwater in the NCP were mainly of the Ca-HCO, Na·Ca-HCO types, with the main HCO, Na and Ca ions in both types of groundwater originating from silicate and evaporite salt dissolution and influenced by alternating cation adsorption, while the presence of NO was mainly anthropogenic.

Tetrodotoxin (TTX), a pufferfish toxin, is a highly potent neurotoxin that has been found in a wide variety of animals. The TTX-bearing flatworm Planocera multitentaculata possesses a large amount of TTX and is considered responsible for the toxification of TTX-bearing animals such as pufferfish (Takifugu and Chelonodon) and the toxic goby Yongeichthys criniger. However, the mechanism underlying TTX accumulation in flatworms remains unclear.
