Diet Quality and Subsequent Incidence of Upper Gastrointestinal Cancers: Results from the Golestan Cohort Study.

Arch Iran Med

September 2023

Genomic Epidemiology Branch, International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC/WHO), Lyon, France.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent research indicates that overall diet quality is linked to the risk of upper gastrointestinal (UGI) cancers, particularly in high-risk regions like northeastern Iran, where dietary patterns differ from high-income countries.
  • The study followed over 50,000 individuals from 2004 to 2020, using various dietary indices to assess diet quality and found that better dietary scores were associated with reduced risk for both esophageal (up to 12%) and stomach cancers (up to 17%).
  • Notably, specific diets like the Alternative Mediterranean Diet and the World Cancer Research Fund/American Institute for Cancer Research scores showed stronger protective effects against these cancers compared to other dietary scores like the Healthy Eating Index.

Urinary nitrate and sodium in a high-risk area for upper gastrointestinal cancers: Golestan Cohort Study.

Environ Res

November 2022

Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology Branch, Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, USA.

Background: The epidemiological evidence regarding the carcinogenicity of nitrate and sodium in drinking water is limited, partly because measuring the exposure at the individual level is complex. Most studies have used nitrate in water supplies as a proxy for individual exposure, but dietary intakes and other factors may contribute to the exposure. The present study investigates the factors associated with urinary nitrate and sodium in a high-risk area for esophageal and gastric cancers.

Non-sensory Influences on Auditory Learning and Plasticity.

J Assoc Res Otolaryngol

April 2022

Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, 60208, USA.

Distinguishing between regular and irregular heartbeats, conversing with speakers of different accents, and tuning a guitar-all rely on some form of auditory learning. What drives these experience-dependent changes? A growing body of evidence suggests an important role for non-sensory influences, including reward, task engagement, and social or linguistic context. This review is a collection of contributions that highlight how these non-sensory factors shape auditory plasticity and learning at the molecular, physiological, and behavioral level.

Biodiversity is a complex, yet essential, concept for undergraduate students in ecology and other natural sciences to grasp. As beginner scientists, students must learn to recognize, describe, and interpret patterns of biodiversity across various spatial scales and understand their relationships with ecological processes and human influences. It is also increasingly important for undergraduate programs in ecology and related disciplines to provide students with experiences working with large ecological datasets to develop students' data science skills and their ability to consider how ecological processes that operate at broader spatial scales (macroscale) affect local ecosystems.
