Snakebite is a significant health concern in Africa, particularly due to neurotoxic envenomation which can lead to neuromuscular paralysis and respiratory failure. In Nigeria, snakes from the Elapidae family are a notable cause of envenomation cases, though these incidents are underreported. This review examined case reports of neurotoxic envenomation in Africa, highlighting the clinical impacts and the efficacy of available antivenoms.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent neurodegenerative disease that affects people aged 60 years and above. Yet, the discovery of potent therapeutic agents against this disease has no utmost progress and a number of drug candidates could not make it out of the clinical trials at varied stages. At the same time, the currently available anti-cholinesterase (AChE) and monoamine oxidase-B (MAO-B) for the treatment of AD can only improve the clinical symptoms while the recently approved immunotherapy agent "remains questionable.

Progress towards the elimination of trachoma in Nigeria.

Int Health

January 2025

Kilimanjaro Centre for Community Ophthalmology, Division of Ophthalmology, University of Cape Town, Cape Town, South Africa.

Article Synopsis
  • Trachoma is a major public health target for elimination in Nigeria by 2030, with systematic efforts starting in 2002 and partnerships like the Global Trachoma Mapping Project aiding in data collection.
  • Over the years, significant actions have been taken, including providing over 34 million antibiotic treatments and addressing trichiasis management in 231 local government areas, resulting in 89 LGAs eliminating active trachoma.
  • Continued progress in improving water and sanitation, along with strong national program leadership and sustained funding, is essential for achieving the elimination of trachoma as a public health issue in Nigeria by the set deadline.

Introduction: According to the World Health Organization, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a silent global pandemic that plagues everyone. It makes therapy of infectious diseases more difficult and eventually increases morbidity and mortality.

Aim: The purpose of this work is to examine existing data on plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR), to assess the prevalence of PMQR genes in Enterobacterales, and to determine any knowledge gaps from sub-Saharan Africa.

The emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in both humans and animals is a growing health threat worldwide. Significant quantities of antibiotics are used in the livestock production sector, particularly in poultry farming to enhance growth and productivity. A cross-sectional study was conducted in three states of northwestern Nigeria to understand the level of knowledge, attitude, and practice of commercial poultry farmers on antimicrobial resistance.

Measles is a highly infectious, vaccine-preventable viral disease that runs a devastating course in developing countries due to its association with malnutrition and poor immunization coverage. Subcutaneous emphysema (SE) is a rare complication of measles that can be challenging to manage and may portend poor outcomes if untreated. We present a case of a two-year-old unimmunized rural dweller who presented with facial, neck, and chest swellings three days after being managed for measles exanthem from a referral hospital.

Transgenerational impact of maternal zinc deficiency on offspring metabolic outcomes in Drosophila melanogaster.

J Nutr Biochem

August 2024

Centre for Advanced Medical Research and Training, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto 2346, Nigeria; Department of Medical Biochemistry, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto 2346, Nigeria. Electronic address:

Maternal zinc deficiency significantly influences fetal development and long-term health outcomes, yet its transgenerational effects remain poorly understood. This study aims to investigate the transgenerational effects of maternal zinc deficiency on metabolic outcomes in Drosophila melanogaster. Zinc deficiency was induced in Drosophila by incorporating TPEN (N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethylenediamine) into their diet.

Background: Despite the huge burden of sickle cell disease (SCD) among Nigerian children, the burden and outcome of respiratory illnesses remain undocumented. Thus, we aimed to describe the spectrum and outcome of respiratory illnesses among SCD childrenand adolescentadmissions in ten Nigerian tertiary hospitals.

Method: A retrospective review of the SCD admission records of children and adolescents with a confirmed diagnosis of respiratory illnesses from 2012 to 2021 in ten tertiary health facilities across five geopolitical zones in Nigeria was conducted.

Purpose: The global burden of disease and mortality is greatly influenced by malaria, particularly in children. Nigeria alone accounts for about 25% of global malaria cases and fatalities. Despite efforts to control and eliminate malaria, conventional treatments have limitations, prompting the need for a vaccine.

Background And Aims: Although exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) has many benefits, it is not commonly practiced in several countries as a result of context-specific challenges. EBF practice is thus a global health discourse because over 200 million children suffer from malnutrition despite the abundance of human milk. The risk of starvation remains very high among African children with less than 40% of them exclusively breastfed.

This comprehensive analysis examines the multifaceted impacts of population growth on public health in Nigeria. Drawing parallels with Omran's epidemiological transition model (that focuses on the intricate means that patterns of health and illness are changing, as well as the relationships that exist between these patterns and the sociological, demographic, and economic factors that influence them) and referencing experiences from Chile and Ceylon. The study highlights a substantial rise in Nigeria's population causing a double burden of infectious and non-communicable diseases, leading to higher morbidity, and mortality rates, increased healthcare costs, decreased productivity, and health inequalities, posing significant challenges to the country's healthcare system.

Background And Aims: One of the greatest public health problems of the 21st century is undernutrition in children under the age of 5 years (CAUFY). Globally, over 232 million CUAFY are undernourished and approximately 45% of mortality in this population are undernutrition-induced. This paper reviewed and critically explained the factors perpetuating undernutrition in CUAFY in the global space.

Purpose: The anterolateral (AL) and anteromedial (AM) surfaces of the humerus are typically used for plate placement during plate osteosynthesis of midshaft humeral fractures via the anterolateral approach. The purpose of this study was to determine if a significant difference exists in the rates of iatrogenic radial nerve palsy (IRNP) following either AL or AM humeral fracture plating. The research question is stated as follows: is anteromedial plating of humeral fractures associated with lower rates of IRNP when compared with anterolateral plating?

Methods: This multicenter prospective randomized study was undertaken following ethical review and approval with eligible patients who had midshaft humeral fractures or nonunions randomized into 2 groups, viz AL plate osteosynthesis group and AM plate osteosynthesis group.
