Background: In Uganda, adolescent girls', and young women's (AGYW-15-24 years) current HIV prevalence is fourfold compared with their male counterparts due to compounded social, economic, and environmental factors. Using the Protective Motivation Theory (PMT), we explored HIV-acquisition risk sources and perceived protective factors from AGYW and caregivers' perspective.

Materials And Methods: During 2018, we conducted a qualitative study guided by PMT to explore factors influencing HIV acquisition among AGYW.

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is recommended as an HIV prevention measure for men who have sex with men (MSM). We assessed factors associated with PrEP retention and adherence among MSM in Kigali, Rwanda. We undertook a retrospective cross-sectional study and used a questionnaire to obtain PrEP retention and adherence history from MSM enrolled in the key population (KP) program that attended scheduled follow-up clinics from four (4) health facilities between April 2021 to June 2021.

Article Synopsis
  • Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection rates globally, making national HBV prevalence estimates crucial for Kenya's viral hepatitis program.
  • In a study analyzing data from over 3,000 participants aged 15-64 in the 2018 Kenya Population-based HIV Impact Assessment, the national HBV prevalence was found to be 3.0%, equating to approximately 810,600 infected individuals in this age group.
  • The study revealed significant geographical variations in HBV prevalence, with higher rates in certain regions, among people living with HIV, older individuals, those with no formal education, and in lower economic groups; lack of formal education was notably linked to increased HBV infection risk.

During population-based HIV impact assessments (PHIAs), some participants who self-reported testing HIV-positive (PSRP) tested negative in one or more subsequent survey HIV tests. These unexpected discrepancies between their self-reported results and the survey results draw into question the validity of either the self-reported status or the test results. We analyzed PSRP with negative test results aged 15-59 years old using data collected from 2015 to 2021 in 13 countries, assessing prevalence, self-report status, survey HIV status, viral load, rapid tests and confirmatory tests, and answers to follow-up questions (such as years on treatment).

Introduction: the increasing number of people receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) in sub-Saharan Africa has stressed already overburdened health systems. A care model utilizing community-based peer-groups (ART Co-ops) facilitated by community health workers (CHW) was implemented (2016-2018) to address these challenges. In 2018, a post-intervention study assessed perceptions of the intervention.

Biomarkers in Detection of Hepatitis C Virus Infection.

Pathogens

April 2024

Division of Viral Hepatitis, National Center for HIV, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, GA 30329-4018, USA.

The hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection affects 58 million people worldwide. In the United States, the incidence rate of acute hepatitis C has doubled since 2014; during 2021, this increased to 5% from 2020. Acute hepatitis C is defined by any symptom of acute viral hepatitis plus either jaundice or elevated serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity with the detection of HCV RNA, the anti-HCV antibody, or hepatitis C virus antigen(s).

Background: Men who have sex with men (MSM) are a key population group disproportionately affected by HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) worldwide. In Rwanda, the HIV epidemic remains a significant public health concern, and understanding the burden of HIV and hepatitis B and C coinfections among MSM is crucial for designing effective prevention and control strategies. This study aims to determine the prevalence of HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C infections among MSM in Rwanda and identify correlates associated with HIV infection within this population.

Background: Recent studies point to the need to incorporate the detection of non-falciparum species into malaria surveillance activities in sub-Saharan Africa, where 95% of the world's malaria cases occur. Although malaria caused by infection with Plasmodium falciparum is typically more severe than malaria caused by the non-falciparum Plasmodium species P. malariae, P.

Women infected during pregnancy with TORCH (Toxoplasmosis, Other, Rubella, Cytomegalovirus, and Herpes simplex viruses) pathogens have a higher risk of adverse birth outcomes including stillbirth / miscarriage because of mother-to-child transmission. To investigate these risks in pregnant women in Kenya, we analyzed serum specimens from a pregnancy cohort study at three healthcare facilities. A sample of 481 participants was selected for TORCH pathogen antibody testing to determine seroprevalence.

Introduction: The Global AIDS Strategy 2021-2026 calls for equitable and equal access to HIV prevention and treatment programmes for all populations to reduce HIV incidence and end HIV/AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. Transgender populations (TGP), including transmen (TGM) and transwomen (TGW) are populations that have been marginalised and are at high risk of HIV infection in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Limited surveillance data on HIV among TGP are available in the region to guide programmatic responses and policymaking.

The elimination of hepatitis D as a public health problem: Needs and challenges.

J Viral Hepat

January 2024

Viral Hepatitis Prevention Board, Centre for the Evaluation of Vaccination (CEV), VAXINFECTIO, University of Antwerp, Antwerp, Belgium.

Infection with hepatitis D virus leads to liver disease and cancer most rapidly of all hepatitis viruses. However, knowledge about hepatitis D remains poor and the burden and impact are underestimated, even though some 12-15 million people mainly in low- and middle-income countries may be affected. Its epidemiology is changing, with increasing migration leading to increased risks of infection and disease.

Vaccination against hepatitis B using a dissolving microneedle patch (dMNP) could increase access to the birth dose by reducing expertise needed for vaccine administration, refrigerated storage, and safe disposal of biohazardous sharps waste. In this study, we developed a dMNP to administer hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) adjuvant-free monovalent vaccine (AFV) at doses of 5 µg, 10 µg, and 20 µg, and compared its immunogenicity to vaccination with 10 µg of standard monovalent HBsAg delivered by intramuscular (IM) injection either in an AFV format or as aluminum-adjuvanted vaccine (AAV). Vaccination was performed on a three dose schedule of 0, 3, and 9 weeks in mice and 0, 4, and 24 weeks in rhesus macaques.

Tuberculosis (TB) primarily affects women during their reproductive years and contributes to maternal mortality and poor pregnancy outcomes. For pregnant women living with HIV (WLHIV), TB is the leading cause of non-obstetric maternal mortality, and pregnant WLHIV with TB are at increased risk of transmitting both TB and HIV to their infants. TB diagnosis among pregnant women, particularly WLHIV, remains challenging, and TB preventive treatment (TPT) coverage among pregnant WLHIV is limited.
