To evaluate the effect of acute high-altitude exposure on sensory and short-term memory using interactive software, we transported 30 volunteers in a sport utility vehicle to a 4280 m plateau within 3 h. We measured their memory performance on the plain (initial arrival) and 3 h after arrival on the plateau using six measures. Memory performance was significantly poorer on the plateau by four of the six measures.

A keloid is a benign skin tumor formed by an overgrowth of granulation tissue in affected patients. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPAR-γ) agonists were reported to be able to regulate extracellular matrix production in human dermal fibroblasts. This study explored the underlying molecular mechanism of PPAR-γ agonist troglitazone treatment for fibroblasts obtained from keloid patients.

Background. KDM6A (Lysine (K)-Specific Demethylase 6A) is the driver gene related to esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). In order to provide more biological insights into KDM6A, in this paper, we treat PPI (protein-protein interaction) network derived from KDM6A as a conceptual framework and follow it to review its biological function.

Current results identified 4-substituted 2-phenylaminoquinazoline compounds as novel Mer tyrosine kinase (Mer TK) inhibitors with a new scaffold. Twenty-one 2,4-disubstituted quinazolines (series 4-7) were designed, synthesized, and evaluated against Mer TK and a panel of human tumor cell lines aimed at exploring new Mer TK inhibitors as novel potential antitumor agents. A new lead, 4b, was discovered with a good balance between high potency (IC50 0.

Background: Rectal indometacin decreases the occurrence of pancreatitis after endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). However, the population most at risk and the optimal timing of administration require further investigation. We aimed to assess whether pre-procedural administration of rectal indometacin in all patients is more effective than post-procedural use in only high-risk patients to prevent post-ERCP pancreatitis.

Recent microRNA expression profiling studies have documented an up-regulation of miR-146a in several angiogenesis models. However, the underlying molecular mechanism of miR-146a in the angiogenic activity of endothelial cells has not been clearly elucidated. The present study was aimed to evaluate whether miR-146a promotes angiogenesis in HUVECs by increasing FGFBP1 expression via directly targeting CREB3L1.

Abnormally high activation of transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) signaling has been demonstrated to be involved in the initiation and progression of keloids. However, the functional role of long non-coding RNA (lncRNA)-activated by TGF-β (lncRNA-ATB) in keloids has not been documented. Here we investigated the role of lncRNA-ATB in the autocrine secretion of TGF-β in keloid fibroblasts (KFs) and explored the underlying molecular mechanism.

Accumulating evidence suggests that the tumor suppressor gene Krüppel-like factor 6 (KLF6) plays important roles in both development and progression of cancer. However, the role of KLF6 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains unclear. Cancer-related molecule basigin-2 plays an important role in HCC progression and metastasis.

Objectives: The poor safety profile of sunitinib capsules has encouraged the identification of targeted drug delivery systems against renal cell carcinoma. This study aimed to explore the effect of sunitinib-loaded microbubbles along with ultrasound (US) treatment on proliferation and apoptosis of human GRC-1 granulocyte renal carcinoma cells in vitro and in vivo (xenograft tumor growth in nude mice).
Methods: Liposomes containing sunitinib were prepared by using the transmembrane ammonium sulfate gradient method and then absorbed into polymer microbubbles to generate sunitinib-loaded microbubbles.

Background And Purpose: Berberine, a small molecule derived from Coptidis rhizome, has been found to be potent at lowering blood glucose and regulating lipid metabolism. Recent clinical studies have shown that berberine reduces blood pressure and increases systemic insulin sensitivity in patients with metabolic syndrome; however, the underlying mechanism is still unclear. Here, we investigated the mechanism by which berberine improves vascular insulin sensitivity in diabetic rats.

Osteoporosis is a systemic metabolic bone disorder characterized by a decrease in bone mass and degradation of the bone microstructure, leaving bones that are fragile and prone to fracture. Most osteoporosis treatments improve symptoms, but to date there is no quick and effective therapy. Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs) have pluripotent potential.

We investigated the presence of serum antinuclear antibodies (ANAs) and autoantibodies and their relationship with serum prognostic indicators in lymphoma patients. The study population comprised 127 patients diagnosed with lymphoma and 138 healthy control subjects. The blood samples of the participants were assayed for ANAs by immunofluorescence, and autoantibodies were detected by western blotting.

CD147 overexpresses in many epithelium-originated tumors and plays an important role in tumor migration and invasion. Most studies aim at the role of CD147 in tumor progression using tumor cell models. However, the influence of abnormal overexpression of CD147 on neoplastic transformation of normal cells is unknown.

The p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) plays a key role in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced signal transduction pathways that lead to inflammatory cytokine synthesis in macrophages; however, whether the inhibition of p38 MAPK regulates LPS-induced inflammatory cytokine expression in different types of macrophages remains the subject of debate. Herein, we assessed whether the inhibition of p38 MAPK by SB203580 regulates LPS-induced expression of the inflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) and interleukin 6 (IL-6) in RAW264.7 and resident peritoneal macrophages.

Objective: To study the mutation characteristics of the phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) gene in children with phenylketonuria (PKU) from the Qinghai area of China, in order to provide basic information for genetic counseling and prenatal diagnosis.
Methods: Mutations of the PAH gene were detected in the promoter and exons 1-13 and their flanking intronic sequences of PAH gene by PCR and DNA sequencing in 49 children with PKU and their parents from the Qinghai area of China.
Results: A total of 30 different mutations were detected in 80 out of 98 mutant alleles (82%), including 19 missense (63%), 5 nonsense (17%), 3 splice-site (10%) and 3 deletions (10%).

The Hippo signaling pathway controls organ size and tumorigenesis through a kinase cascade that inactivates Yes-associated protein (YAP). Here, we show that YAP plays a central role in controlling the progression of cervical cancer. Our results suggest that YAP expression is associated with a poor prognosis for cervical cancer.

Objective: To investigate the changes in characteristics of blood gas analysis of heatstroke rats residing in dry-heat environment of desert, and to provide a theoretical reference for its treatment in clinic.
Methods: Forty-eight male Sprague-Dawley ( SD ) adult rats under anesthesia were divided into six groups by random number table, with 8 rats in each group: namely mild, moderate, severe heatstroke groups and their corresponding control groups. The rats were placed in an artificial chamber with simulated desert dry-heat environment ( temperature 41 centigrade, humidity 10% ) for about 70, 110, 145 minutes, respectively, to reproduce mild, moderate, severe heatstroke models.
