Fish bile has long been considered to have therapeutic benefits in folk medicine in some Asian countries. However, poisoning incidents and even death sporadically occurred when people consumed fish bile. Herein, we summarize the main characteristics of fish bile poisoning in China including clinical symptoms, treatment strategies and factors being associated with death and affecting prognosis, hoping to provide a reference for the diagnosis and treatment of fish bile poisoning, as well as forensic identification of death cases induced by fish bile poisoning.

Sepsis is defined as a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infections. Previous studies have indicated that lidocaine, an amide local anesthetic, has anti-inflammatory properties; however, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we have shown that lidocaine dose-dependently inhibits lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced production of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in macrophages and that lidocaine protects mice from LPS-induced inflammation.

Ouabain, a steroid binding to the Na/K-ATPase, has several pharmacological effects. In addition to the recognized effects of blood pressure, there is more convincing evidence suggesting that ouabain is involved in immunologic functions and inflammation. Hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) is a metabolic regulator which plays a considerable role in immune responses.

Ischemic stroke remains as a major cause for disability and death in the world. Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) cardiac hypertrophy-related factor (CHRF) has been suggested as a crucial modulator in cardiac injury and various human cancers. Nevertheless, its effects and mechanism on ischemic stroke remains unclear.

The abnormal upregulation of transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) signaling has been demonstrated to initiate keloid formation and progression. Keloid is a type of benign skin tumor that may occur following sustaining skin injury. microRNA-96 (miR-96) serves an important role in the progression of various malignant diseases.

Background & Aims: Rectal indomethacin and spraying of the duodenal papilla with epinephrine might reduce the incidence of pancreatitis after endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). We performed a randomized trial to compare the effects of the combination of indomethacin and epinephrine (IE) vs indomethacin plus saline (IS) in prophylaxis of post-ERCP pancreatitis (PEP).
Methods: We performed a double-blind trial at 10 centers in China, from February 2017 to October 2017, of 1158 patients with native papilla undergoing ERCP.

The study aimed to develop a chitosan (CS)-based scaffold for repairing calvarial bone defects. We fabricated composite scaffolds made of CS and bovine-derived xenograft (BDX), characterized their physicochemical properties including pore size and porosity, absorption, degradation, and compressive strength, compared their efficacy to support proliferation and differentiation of human jaw bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hJBMMSCs), and evaluated their bone regeneration capacity in critical-size rat calvarial defects. The CS/BDX (mass ratio of 40:60) composite scaffold with porosity of 46.

Previous research has demonstrated the anti-tumor properties of Abnormal Savda Munziq (ASMq), a traditional Uyghur compound herbal medicine. The effects of ASMq on cervical carcinomas in U27 tumor-bearing mice is investigated, the effect of adding Fluorouracil (5-FU) is also assessed in this paper. The results demonstrate that ASMq and 5-FU significantly inhibited the proliferation of U27 cells in a time-dependent and dose-dependent manner.

Introduction: To reduce the ischaemia time of injured limbs in wartime, temporary vascular shunts (TVS) are commonly used. However, TVS are stabilized at the ends of the injured vessels using manual suture ties, the risk of dislodgement is high, and tightening manual suture ties is too time consuming.
Technical Summary: Locked temporary vascular shunts (LTVS) were designed, and each was composed of a silicone tube with a threaded outer surface and smooth inner surface in addition to two nylon buckle switches.

Patients with cirrhosis used to be associated with frequent use of blood components because of their complex disorder of hemostasis and bleeding complications. Recent findings have indicated that patients with cirrhosis have a state of "rebalanced" or even procoagulant hemostasis and have questioned the prophylactic use of plasma. To evaluate the current status of plasma use in patients with cirrhosis, we conducted a retrospective survey in 11 tertiary-care hospitals in China from September 1 to October 31, 2013.

Objectives: To explore the effect of citric acid (CA)-1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide (EDC)/N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) collagen gel on repairing annular defects.
Methods: Type I collagen was extracted from the rat-tail tendon and crosslinked with CA at different mass ratio using EDC and NHS as crosslinking reagents to prepare four kinds of collagen gels. Forty-eight adult SD rats were divided into first sham group (n = 8), second group (n = 10) which was punctured and injected with CA-EDC/NHS collagen gel, third group (n = 10) which was punctured and injected with CA-EDC/NHS collagen gel, fourth group (n = 10) which was punctured and injected with EDC/NHS collagen gel, and fifth group (n = 10) which was punctured and untreated.

The physiological level of nitric oxide (NO) released by brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMECs) at normoxia can block the degradation of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) in astrocytes and initiate the compensatory response to hypoxia. However, it is unclear whether this occurs at mild hypoxia. This study was to investigate the expression of HIF-1α, VEGF and LDHA and the lactic acid production in astrocytes with or without co-culture with BMECs after mild hypoxia exposure.

MicroRNA-26a (miR-26a) is expressed at lower levels in prostate cancer cells compared with normal prostate cells. However, the regulatory mechanism of miR-26a in tumorigenesis and metastasis is not clear. In the present study, the expression profile of cellular miR-26a was analyzed by reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction.

Corosolic acid (CRA), a pentacyclic triterpene isolated from medicinal herbs, has been reported to exhibit anticancer properties in several cancers. However, the anticancer activity of CRA in osteosarcoma cells is still unclear. In the present study, the inhibitory effect of CRA in osteosarcoma MG-63 cells was investigated, and the results revealed that CRA significantly inhibited the viability of MG-63 cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner.

Osteosarcoma (OS) causes millions of death worldwide and, since there is no effective therapy, it is necessary to identify the molecular mechanism of OS, which can direct the development of new therapies. This study investigated the role of bone morphogenetic protein 9 (BMP9), a member of the transforming growth factor (TGF)-β family, in OS development. This study first examined BMP9 expression in tissue from OS patients and normal subjects.
