A prospective, observational, multicenter study on risk factors and prophylaxis for low emetic risk chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting.

Purpose: The incidence of and the risk factors for nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing low emetic risk chemotherapy (LEC) are unclear. The aim of the study was to provide information on these topics by performing a multicenter, observational, prospective study.

Methods: The study consisted of patients who were administered first-time LEC that was consistent or inconsistent with current guidelines.

Clinical and Genetic Features of Patients With TNFRSF1A Variants in Japan: Findings of a Nationwide Survey.

Objective: To elucidate the clinical and genetic features of patients with TNFRSF1A variants in Japan using data obtained from a nationwide survey conducted by the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare of Japan study group for tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated periodic syndrome (TRAPS).

Methods: Inquiries were sent to 2,900 departments of internal medicine and pediatrics in all hospitals with more than 200 beds in Japan, asking whether they had patients in whom TRAPS was suspected. Genetic tests for TNFRSF1A, MEFV, and MVK were performed on 169 patients.

Clinical efficacy of adalimumab in Crohn's disease: a real practice observational study in Japan.

Background: There are few reports of the efficacy of adalimumab (ADA) for clinical remission and preventing postoperative recurrence in Crohn's disease (CD) in Asian real practice settings. We conducted a Japanese multicenter retrospective observational study.

Methods: We evaluated patients with CD who were treated with ADA at 11 medical institutions in Japan to investigate the clinical efficacy of remission up to 52 weeks and the associated factors to achieve remission with a CD Activity Index (CDAI) < 150.

[Treatment of Right Atrial Myxoma Complicated with Pulmonary Embolism;Report of a Case].

Methods: This is a retrospective multicenter study conducted in Nagasaki, Japan. We consecutively diagnosed a total of 41 patients with RS3PE syndrome between October 2003 and September 2012 and evaluated their outcomes from medical records from the first year of follow-up.

Aim: In-hospital cardiac arrest is an important issue in health care today. Data regarding in-hospital cardiac arrest in Japan is limited. In Australia and the USA, the Rapid Response System has been implemented in many institutions and data regarding in-hospital cardiac arrest are collected to evaluate the efficacy of the Rapid Response System.

Response to cimetidine in a 1-year-old child with PFAPA syndrome.

Periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and cervical adenitis (PFAPA) syndrome is characterized by periodic febrile attacks recurring regularly every 2 to 8 weeks. Although tonsillectomy is offered as an effective treatment, the effectiveness of cimetidine treatment is still controversial. In this article, we describe two cases.

Factors Associated with Post-Progression Survival in Patients with Advanced Hepatocellular Carcinoma Treated with Sorafenib.

Sorafenib exerts modest antitumor activity in patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and radiological progressive disease (rPD) does not always correspond to so-called clinical progressive disease (cPD). We evaluated 101 patients who initiated sorafenib treatment for HCC and assessed post-progression survival (PPS) using the Cox proportional hazards model. PPS was calculated from the date of the first rPD until the date of death or the last follow-up.

Significance of technetium-99m human serum albumin diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid scintigraphy in patients with nephrotic syndrome.

It is thought that a large amount of albumin leaking from the glomerulus in nephrotic syndrome (NS) is reabsorbed at the proximal tubule and catabolized. Therefore, it is possible the final quantity of urinary protein does not always reflect the amount of leakage of protein from the glomerulus. We experienced two cases without nephrotic range proteinuria thought to involve hypoproteinemia due to the same pathophysiology as NS.

Patients with thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms (TAAA) often have severe ischemic heart disease. The determination of which condition to treat first is based on disease severity, but in some cases the conditions are equally severe. A 78-year-old woman received a diagnosis of a 59-mm TAAA and coronary artery stenosis.

Trochlear nerve schwannoma with intratumoral hemorrhage presenting with persistent hiccups: a case report.

Trochlear nerve schwannoma without neurofibromatosis is extremely rare. To our knowledge, only 31 surgical cases have been reported to date, and only 2 cases of trochlear nerve schwannoma with intratumoral hemorrhage have been reported. None of those cases presented with persistent hiccups.

A comparison of the long-term effects of lanthanum carbonate and calcium carbonate on the course of chronic renal failure in rats with adriamycin-induced nephropathy.

Lanthanum carbonate (LA) is an effective phosphate binder. Previous study showed the phosphate-binding potency of LA was twice that of calcium carbonate (CA). No study in which LA and CA were given at an equivalent phosphate-binding potency to rats or humans with chronic renal failure for a long period has been reported to date.

Purpose: To investigate the efficacy of erlotinib versus docetaxel in previously treated patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in an epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) -unselected patient population.

Patients And Methods: The primary end point was progression-free survival (PFS). Secondary end points included overall survival (OS), response rate, safety, and analyses on EGFR wild-type tumors.

[Two cases of anterior cerebral artery aneurysm associated with accessory anterior cerebral artery: review of the literature and points of diagnosis].

The accessory anterior cerebral artery (AccACA) is an anomalous vessel arising from the anterior communicating artery. Although AccACA is not particularly rare, aneurysms arising from the AccACA is extremely rare. Here, we report two cases of unruptured AccACA aneurysms.

Long term speech perception after cochlear implant in pediatric patients with GJB2 mutations.

Objectives: To determine the long term effect of cochlear implant (CI) in children with GJB2-related deafness in Japan.

Methods: Genetic testing was performed on 29 children with CI. The speech perception in 9 children with GJB2 gene-related deafness fitted with CI was compared with those in matched 10 children who were diagnosed as having no genetic loci.

[A case of internal carotid artery stenosis with discontinuance of carotid endarterectomy due to the tight adhesions around the internal carotid artery].

A 73-year-old female visited her local doctor after repeatedly experiencing temporary weakness in her left upper and lower extremities. The patient underwent a cervical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan and was diagnosed with right internal carotid artery stenosis. Despite administration of antiplatelet drugs, her symptoms continued, and she was referred to our department for medical treatment.

Treatment options for chronic renal artery dissection, which is a rare cause of renal artery stenosis and renovascular hypertension, such as medical management, percutaneous intervention, and open surgical repair remain controversial. [A case of Mycobacterium intracellulare pulmonary infection with vertebral osteomyelitis].

A 78-year-old woman seen in June 2005 for chest abnormal shadows after 3 months of steroid therapy for vasculitis associated with antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibodies was found in chest computed tomography (CT) revealed bronchiectasis and small nodules in the right middle lobe and left lingula. Sputum cultures were positive for Mycobacterium intracellulare. Based on a diagnosis of pulmonary nontuberculous mycobacteriosis, the woman underwent antimycobacterial therapy with clarithromycin, rifampicin, and ethambutol hydrochloride for 10 months.
