BACKGROUND Limb-girdle muscular dystrophy recessive 1 (LGMDR1) is an autosomal recessive degenerative muscle disorder characterized by progressive muscular weakness caused by pathogenic variants in the CAPN3 gene. Desmoplastic small round cell tumors (DSRCT) are ultra-rare and aggressive soft tissue sarcomas usually in the abdominal cavity, molecularly characterized by the presence of a EWSR1::WT1 fusion transcript. Mouse models of muscular dystrophy, including LGMDR1, present an increased risk of soft tissue sarcomas.

Purpose: To propose a methodology for integrating the out-of-field and imaging doses to the in-field dose received by radiotherapy (RT) patients. In addition, the impact of considering the total dose in planning and radiation-induced second malignancies (RISM) risk assessment will be evaluated in several scenarios comprising photon and proton treatments.

Methods: The total dose is the voxel-wise sum of the doses from the different radiation sources (accounting for the radiobiological effectiveness) produced during the whole RT chain.

Department of Surgery and Oncology, CLINTEC, Karolinska Institutet, Dep. of Upper Gastrointestinal Diseases, Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden.

Purpose: Oligometastatic gastroesophageal cancer is a clinical entity with no standard treatment recommendation. Treatment with curative intent has recently emerged as an option for selected patients in contrast to the traditional palliative treatment strategy. This prospective study aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of combined systemic and local treatment with curative intent for patients with oligometastatic gastroesophageal cancer.

Background: This prospective cohort study aimed to assess whether postoperative radiotherapy could safely be omitted in women ≥ 65 years with low-risk, estrogen receptor (ER)-positive T1N0 breast cancer treated with breast-conserving surgery and adjuvant endocrine therapy.

Methods: Eligible patients were women ≥ 65 years with unifocal, non-lobular, grade 1 or 2, ER-positive, pT1N0 breast cancer treated with breast-conserving surgery and endocrine therapy for five years. Patients were followed up with mammography at least annually for 10 years.

Background: There is conflicting evidence regarding whether postoperative complications after breast cancer surgery are associated with worse oncological outcome. This study aimed to assess the risk of systemic breast cancer recurrence after surgical site infection and also the impact of surgical site infection on locoregional recurrence, breast cancer-specific survival and overall survival.

Methods: This nationwide cohort study included patients who underwent surgery for primary breast cancer in Sweden between January 2008 and September 2019.

December 2024

Department of Orthopaedics and Hand surgery, Uppsala University Hospital, Uppsala, Sweden; Department of Surgical Sciences, Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden. Electronic address:

Background Context: Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) is a surgical technique that can be used to treat several conditions of the cervical spine. Small sized studies have reported differences in radiological findings between cage only and cage with plate fusion techniques but no differences in clinical outcome, hence, larger studies are needed.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the outcomes of ACDF between cage only and cage with plate fixation.

Objective: The purposes of this study were to assess the clinical characteristics of patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) who fulfill the ClASsification criteria for Psoriatic ARthritis (CASPAR) 18 years after disease onset in a population-based setting and to identify features likely to predict psoriatic arthritis (PsA).

Methods: Patients with JIA from defined geographic regions of Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden with disease onset from 1997 to 2000 were enrolled prospectively and followed up for 18 years. Clinical, laboratory, and heredity data for psoriasis were collected.

Introduction: As breast cancer survival rates improve, the long-term quality of life (QoL) has become increasingly important. With a significant number of patients still undergoing mastectomy and experiencing its well-known negative impacts on QoL, breast reconstruction aims to mitigate this by restoring body integrity. This study aimed to evaluate the changes in QoL and satisfaction in patients after breast reconstruction and influence of various patient-related factors.

Exploratory insights from the immuno-oncology hollow fiber assay: A pilot approach bridging In Vitro and In Vivo models.

Department of Medical Sciences, Division of Cancer Pharmacology and Computational Medicine, Uppsala University, SE-75185, Uppsala, Sweden. Electronic address:

To facilitate the translation of immunotherapies from bench to bedside, predictive preclinical models are essential. We developed the in vivo immuno-oncology Hollow Fiber Assay (HFA) to bridge the gap between simpler cell-based in vitro assays and more complex mouse models for immuno-oncology drug evaluation. The assay involves co-culturing human cancer cell lines or primary patient-derived cancer cells with human immune cells inside semipermeable hollow fibers.

Modern surgical treatments for lymphedema.

Scand J Surg

December 2024

Department of Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery, Uppsala University Hospital, Uppsala, Sweden.

Lymphedema occurs when the lymphatic system is malformed, leaking or is damaged by infection or cancer treatment. Enlarged extremities due to extensive fluid retention and adipose tissue deposition, recurrent cellulitis, and the requirement for hard-to-wear compression garments lead to impaired limb function and decreased quality of life. This narrative review aims to elucidate classification, diagnostic tools, and conservative management strategies leading the path to patient selection for microsurgical reconstructive procedures or volume reduction procedures.

PET imaging of GABA receptors in pancreatic islets by [C]flumazenil.

EJNMMI Res

December 2024

Department of Medical Cell Biology, Department of Medical Sciences, Science for Life Laboratory, Uppsala University, Box 571, 75123, Uppsala, Sweden.

Background: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease characterized by a progressive β-cell destruction. There are no clinically established methods for quantifying endocrine cells of the pancreas and current knowledge is almost exclusively based on autopsy material and functional measurements. Based on the expression of the γ-aminobutyric acid A receptors (GABARs) in pancreatic islets and the fact that GABAR agonists are being explored as treatment for T1D, we hypothesized that the positron emission tomography (PET) tracer [C]flumazenil ([C]FMZ) could serve as a marker of the endocrine mass of the pancreas.
