The land-terminating margin of the Greenland Ice Sheet has slowed down in recent decades, although the causes and implications for future ice flow are unclear. Explained originally by a self-regulating mechanism where basal slip reduces as drainage evolves from low to high efficiency, recent numerical modeling invokes a sedimentary control of ice sheet flow as an alternative hypothesis. Although both hypotheses can explain the recent slowdown, their respective forecasts of a long-term deceleration versus an acceleration of ice flow are contradictory.

Hypertension

September 2017

Center for Complex Disease Genomics, McKusick-Nathans Institute of Genetic Medicine, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD (D.E.A., P.N., A. Chakravarti, G.B.E.).

Elevated blood pressure is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and has a substantial genetic contribution. Genetic variation influencing blood pressure has the potential to identify new pharmacological targets for the treatment of hypertension. To discover additional novel blood pressure loci, we used 1000 Genomes Project-based imputation in 150 134 European ancestry individuals and sought significant evidence for independent replication in a further 228 245 individuals.

Cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIED) not an absolute contraindication to MRI Conventional cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIED) are presently not an absolute contraindication to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which thus is accessible for device patients depending on risk/benefit assessments. While current literature suggests that MRI can be performed without risk if precautions are taken, adverse events have been reported. The number of MR conditional CIEDs is rapidly increasing, and depending on device and electrode combinations, patients can now undergo advanced MRI at 3.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by reduced lung function and is the third leading cause of death globally. Through genome-wide association discovery in 48,943 individuals, selected from extremes of the lung function distribution in UK Biobank, and follow-up in 95,375 individuals, we increased the yield of independent signals for lung function from 54 to 97. A genetic risk score was associated with COPD susceptibility (odds ratio per 1 s.

The ethical framework for performing research with rare inherited neurometabolic disease patients.

Eur J Pediatr

March 2017

Fondazione Per la Ricerca Farmacologica Gianni Benzi Onlus, Via Abate Eustasio 30, 70010, Valenzano, BA, Italy.

Unlabelled: The need for performing clinical trials to develop well-studied and appropriate medicines for inherited neurometabolic disease patients faces ethical concerns mainly raising from four aspects: the diseases are rare; include young and very young patients; the neurological impairment may compromise the capability to provide 'consent'; and the genetic nature of the disease leads to further ethical implications. This work is intended to identify the ethical provisions applicable to clinical research involving these patients and to evaluate if these cover the ethical issues. Three searches have been performed on the European regulatory/legal framework, the literature and European Union-funded projects.

Background: Smoking is the strongest environmental risk factor for reduced pulmonary function. The genetic component of various pulmonary traits has also been demonstrated, and at least 26 loci have been reproducibly associated with either FEV 1 (forced expiratory volume in 1 second) or FEV 1 /FVC (FEV 1 /forced vital capacity). Although the main effects of smoking and genetic loci are well established, the question of potential gene-by-smoking interaction effect remains unanswered.

is one of only a handful of probable stem-group osteichthyans known from the fossil record. First collected and described in the late 19th century from the upper Silurian Saaremaa Cliff locality in Estonia, it is known from a wealth of disarticulated scales, fin spines, and bone fragments. In this study we provide the first description of the morphology and paleohistology of a fin spine and scale from using virtual thin sections and 3D reconstructions that were segmented using phase-contrast synchrotron X-ray microtomography.

Kidney diseases including diabetic nephropathy have become huge medical problems, although its precise mechanisms are still far from understood. In order to increase our knowledge about the patho-physiology of kidney, we have previously identified >300 kidney glomerulus-enriched transcripts through large-scale sequencing and microarray profiling of the mouse glomerular transcriptome. One of the glomerulus-specific transcripts identified was semaphorin 3G (Sema3G) which belongs to the semaphorin family.

Cardiac Imaging to Evaluate Left Ventricular Diastolic Function.

JACC Cardiovasc Imaging

September 2015

Department of Cardiology and Institute for Surgical Research, Rikshospitalet, Oslo University Hospital, Center for Cardiological Innovation, K.G. Jebsen Cardiac Research Centre, Centre for Heart Failure Research, University of Oslo, Oslo, Norway.

Left ventricular diastolic dysfunction in clinical practice is generally diagnosed by imaging. Recognition of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction has increased interest in the detection and evaluation of this condition and prompted an improved understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of different imaging modalities for evaluating diastolic dysfunction. This review briefly provides the pathophysiological background for current clinical and experimental imaging parameters of diastolic dysfunction, discusses the merits of echocardiography relative to other imaging modalities in diagnosing and grading diastolic dysfunction, summarizes lessons from clinical trials that used parameters of diastolic function as an inclusion criterion or endpoint, and indicates current areas of research.

March 2015

School of Life Sciences and State Key Laboratory of Agrobiotechnology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shatin, Hong Kong

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have recently risen to prominence as novel factors responsible for post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. miRNA genes have been posited as highly conserved in the clades in which they exist. Consequently, miRNAs have been used as rare genome change characters to estimate phylogeny by tracking their gain and loss.
