Article Synopsis
  • Catatonia is a serious condition marked by psychiatric and motor issues, often linked with various mental illnesses, and may have a high mortality rate; its exact cause and classification remain debated among experts.
  • A rare case involved a 17-year-old girl who developed catatonia after recreational drug use, with symptoms appearing a week later, and she had no prior mental health issues or substance abuse history.
  • Treatment with lorazepam, memantine, and lithium successfully improved her condition, emphasizing the need for early recognition of psychomotor symptoms and suggesting that certain drugs may cause delayed onset catatonia, particularly in adolescents.

Soil-transmitted helminths: A critical review of the impact of co-infections and implications for control and elimination.

PLoS Negl Trop Dis

August 2023

The Water Institute at UNC, Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, Gillings School of Public Health, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, United States of America.

Researchers have raised the possibility that soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections might modify the host's immune response against other systemic infections. STH infections can alter the immune response towards type 2 immunity that could then affect the likelihood and severity of other illnesses. However, the importance of co-infections is not completely understood, and the impact and direction of their effects vary considerably by infection.

Bladder exstrophy is a rare congenital malformation leaving the urinary bladder open in the midline of the abdomen at birth. There is a clear genetic background with chromosome aberrations, but so far, no consistent findings apart from 22q11-duplications detected in about 2%-3% of all patients. Some genes are implicated like the LZTR1, ISL1, CELSR3, and the WNT3 genes, but most are not explained molecularly.

Background: Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) comprises a diverse group of preinvasive lesions in the breast and poses a considerable clinical challenge due to lack of markers of progression. Genomic alterations are to a large extent similar in DCIS and invasive carcinomas, although differences in copy number aberrations, gene expression patterns, and mutations exist. In mixed tumors with synchronous invasive breast cancer (IBC) and DCIS, it is still unclear to what extent invasive tumor cells are directly derived from the DCIS cells.

Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is a non-invasive type of breast cancer with highly variable potential of becoming invasive and affecting mortality. Currently, many patients with DCIS are overtreated due to the lack of specific biomarkers that distinguish low risk lesions from those with a higher risk of progression. In this study, we analyzed 57 pure DCIS and 313 invasive breast cancers (IBC) from different patients.
