Meiosis is generally a fair process: each chromosome has a 50% chance of being included into each gamete. However, meiosis can become aberrant with some chromosomes having a higher chance of making it into gametes than others. Yet, why and how such systems evolve remains unclear.

Background: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a significant mental health concern in refugee populations exposed to trauma and displacement. Traditional treatments for PTSD often involve lengthy interventions. However, there's a growing interest in exploring more condensed, intensive treatments to improve outcomes and accessibility for refugees.

Background: Children all over the world are subjected to torture, but few are identified as victims of these actions. Knowledge that facilitates identification, documentation, and treatment of torture injuries in children can allow redress and rehabilitation for more children in need.

Objective: To synthesise research regarding screening, documentation, and treatment of child survivors of torture.

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection is one of the most prevalent viral infections worldwide. In general, host immunity is sufficient to clear viral shedding and recurrences, although it is insufficient to prevent subsequent virologic reactivations. In immunocompromised patients, prolonged and difficult-to-treat HSV infections may develop.

Non-surgical rhinoplasty with hyaluronic acid (HA) filler is a three-dimensional reshaping technique that achieves tissue enhancement by placing HA deep to nasal skin. Due to its unique rheology, Restylane® Lyft (HA-L, Galderma, Uppsala, Sweden) may be particularly well-suited for injection rhinoplasty, as it has high gel firmness (G') for strong structural support with minimal integration propensity. A prospective clinical trial was conducted to evaluate HA-L use for non-surgical rhinoplasty.

The promise of community-driven preprints in ecology and evolution.

Proc Biol Sci

January 2025

Evolution and Ecology Research Centre, School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of New South Wales, Sydney, New South Wales 2052, Australia.

Publishing preprints is quickly becoming commonplace in ecology and evolutionary biology. Preprints can facilitate the rapid sharing of scientific knowledge establishing precedence and enabling feedback from the research community before peer review. Yet, significant barriers to preprint use exist, including language barriers, a lack of understanding about the benefits of preprints and a lack of diversity in the types of research outputs accepted (e.

A cross-sectional study on 156 smallholder dairy farms in Rwanda was carried out to assess the association between farm management practices and milk yield and quality. A pre-tested questionnaire was used to collect data on cow characteristics and farm management practices. Milk yield was recorded at household level, milk composition was monitored using a Lactoscan device (Milk Analyzer).

We conducted a genome-wide association study on income among individuals of European descent (N = 668,288) to investigate the relationship between socio-economic status and health disparities. We identified 162 genomic loci associated with a common genetic factor underlying various income measures, all with small effect sizes (the Income Factor). Our polygenic index captures 1-5% of income variance, with only one fourth due to direct genetic effects.

As available treatments in obstructive sleep apnea are all associated with side-effects or adherence problems, there is a need for alternative treatment options. In this randomized, open, parallel-group intervention study, the effect of head extension by cervical collar was evaluated in patients with moderate obstructive sleep apnea. One-hundred patients with moderate obstructive sleep apnea (apneas and hypopneas per estimated hours asleep = respiratory events index: 15-30) were randomized to either lifestyle intervention, or cervical collar in combination with lifestyle intervention.

Culturing living cells in three-dimensional environments increases the biological relevance of laboratory experiments, but requires solutes to overcome a diffusion barrier to reach the centre of cellular constructs. We present a theoretical and numerical investigation that brings a mechanistic understanding of how microfluidic culture conditions, including chamber size, inlet fluid velocity and spatial confinement, affect solute distribution within three-dimensional cellular constructs. Contact with the chamber substrate reduces the maximally achievable construct radius by 15%.

Review: A systematic review of dairy cow health, welfare, and behaviour in year-round loose range housing.

Animal

December 2024

Oxford Systematic Reviews, 266 Banbury Road, Oxford, OX2 7DL, UK; Department of Biology, University of Oxford, Mansfield Road, Oxford, OX1 3SZ, UK.

This systematic review compares the health, welfare, and behaviour of dairy cows in year-round loose housing systems against those kept in other housing systems in temperate regions. Year-round loose housing systems comprised housing where dairy cows had no access to the outdoors or only had access to a yard, pen or run. The comparator housing systems also comprised housing with and without outdoor access (including grazing).

Background: Hospitalization for children often involves stress induced by fear and pain. Complementary therapies, such as Animal Assisted Activities (AAA) with dogs, can alleviate the hospital experience.

Purpose: The first aim of this study was to initiate the development of an instrument that measures healthcare professionals' attitudes toward complementary therapy, specifically dogs in AAA.

Background: Parents of children treated for cancer may experience psychological difficulties including depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress. Digital interventions, such as internet-administered cognitive behavioral therapy, offer an accessible and flexible means to support parents. However, engagement with and adherence to digital interventions remain a significant challenge, potentially limiting efficacy.

Background: Psychosocial screening is a valuable part of the assessment of patients with orofacial pain, as psychosocial factors will affect prognosis and treatment outcomes. Paper-based questionnaires are predominately used to assess the degree of psychosocial comorbidity; however, digital alternatives for screening questionnaires may be more cost-effective and resource-saving if patients are receptive to using them.

Objective: To evaluate how patients perceive digital psychosocial screening in dentistry.

I've really struggled but it does not seem to work: adolescents' experiences of living with ADHD - a thematic analysis.

Department of Medical Sciences, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Uppsala University, Akademiska sjukhuset, ingång 10, plan, Uppsala, 751 85, Sweden.

Background: In Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) the transition from childhood to adolescence encompass changes in symptom manifestation and related challenges. Given the potential negative impact of ADHD on adolescents, and the increased risk for dropping out from treatment, there is a need to understand more about how adolescents experience their condition. The aim of this study was to explore adolescents' perceptions of how it is to live with ADHD.

While the effect of amplification-induced oncogene expression in cancer is known, the impact of copy-number gains on "bystander" genes is less understood. We create a comprehensive map of dosage compensation in cancer by integrating expression and copy number profiles from over 8000 tumors in The Cancer Genome Atlas and cell lines from the Cancer Cell Line Encyclopedia. Additionally, we analyze 17 cancer open reading frame screens to identify genes toxic to cancer cells when overexpressed.

Background: With the increasing implementation of patient online record access (ORA), various approaches to access to minors' electronic health records have been adopted globally. In Sweden, the current regulatory framework restricts ORA for minors and their guardians when the minor is aged between 13 and 15 years. Families of adolescents with complex health care needs often desire health information to manage their child's care and involve them in their care.
