We illustrate the critical importance of the energetics of cation-solvent versus cation-iodoplumbate interactions in determining the stability of ABX perovskite precursors in a dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent medium. We have shown, through a complementary suite of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and computational studies, that Cs exhibits significantly different solvent vs iodoplumbate interactions compared to organic A-site cations such as CHNH (MA). Two NMR studies were conducted: Cs NMR analysis shows that Cs and MA compete for coordination with PbI in DMF.

The demand for highly permeable and selective thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration membranes, which are essential for seawater and brackish water softening and resource recovery, is growing rapidly. However, improving and tuning membrane permeability and selectivity simultaneously remain highly challenging owing to the lack of thickness control in polyamide films. In this study, we fabricated a high-performance interlayered TFC membrane through classical interfacial polymerization on a MoS-coated polyethersulfone substrate.

A gender lens is needed in hepatitis C elimination research.

Int J Drug Policy

May 2022

The Centre for Social Research in Health, UNSW Sydney, Sydney, Australia; Social Policy Research Centre, UNSW Sydney, Australia.

The World Health Organisation has established a goal of eliminating the hepatitis C virus (HCV) as a public health threat by 2030. Considerable effort is being directed towards research to support and enhance HCV treatment uptake among people who inject drugs, but there is a distinct lack of attention given to gender in this work. We argue that a gender lens is needed to make visible the limitations of current HCV elimination research, and support the development of innovative, inclusive approaches to HCV treatment.

Update on CVD 103-HgR single-dose, live oral cholera vaccine.

Expert Rev Vaccines

January 2022

Emergent Travel Health, Redwood City, California, USA.

Cholera remains endemic in >50 countries, putting millions at risk, especially young children for whom killed vaccines offer limited protection. An oral, live attenuated vaccine - CVD 103-HgR (Vaxchora vaccine) - was licensed by the US FDA in 2016 for adults aged 18-64 years traveling to endemic regions, based on clinical trials in human volunteers showing the vaccine was well tolerated and conferred 90% efficacy within 10 days. The evidence base for Vaxchora vaccine has expanded with additional clinical trial data, in older adults (aged 46-64 years) and children (aged 2-17 years), demonstrating that the vaccine produces a strong vibriocidal antibody response.

Genetic Dissection of Grain Yield Component Traits Under High Nighttime Temperature Stress in a Rice Diversity Panel.

Front Plant Sci

September 2021

Department of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, AR, Untied States.

To dissect the genetic complexity of rice grain yield (GY) and quality in response to heat stress at the reproductive stage, a diverse panel of 190 rice accessions in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) rice mini-core collection (URMC) diversity panel were treated with high nighttime temperature (HNT) stress at the reproductive stage of panicle initiation. The quantifiable yield component response traits were then measured. The traits, panicle length (PL), and number of spikelets per panicle (NSP) were evaluated in subsets of the panel comprising the rice subspecies ssp.

Today's audio, visual, and internet technologies allow people to interact despite physical distances, for casual conversation, group workouts, or musical performance. Musical ensemble performance is unique because interaction integrity critically depends on the timing between each performer's actions and when their acoustic outcomes arrive. Acoustic transmission latency (ATL) between players is substantially longer for networked music performance (NMP) compared to traditional in-person spaces where musicians can easily adapt.

Achieving mechanistic understanding of transport in complex environments such as inside cells or at polymer interfaces is challenging. We need better ways to image transport in 3-D and better single particle tracking algorithms to determine transport that are not systemically biased toward any classical motion model. Here we present an unbiased single particle tracking algorithm: Knowing Nothing Outside Tracking (KNOT).

Life is a mobius strip.

Prog Biophys Mol Biol

December 2021

Department of Pediatrics, University of California, Los Angeles, Westwood, CA, USA. Electronic address:

If you cut a mobius strip in half, the edges form a Trefoil Knot, which can be untied to form a circle, proving it's a true mathematical knot. The cell is a homologue of the mathematical knot since it, too, must be able to unknot itself to form the egg and sperm meiotically in order to reproduce. The homology between a knot and a cell is thought-provoking biologically because the Trefoil Knot is a metaphor for the endoderm, ectoderm and mesoderm, the three germ layers of the gastrula that ultimately produce the embryo, beginning with the zygote.

Over the past decade, extensive optimization of polymeric cell-penetrating peptide (CPP) mimics (CPPMs) by our group has generated a substantial library of broadly effective carriers which circumvent the need for covalent conjugation often required by CPPs. In this study, design rules learned from CPPM development were applied to reverse-engineer the first library of simple amphiphilic block copolypeptides for non-covalent protein delivery, namely, poly(alanine--arginine), poly(phenylalanine--arginine), and poly(tryptophan--arginine). This new CPP library was screened for enhanced green fluorescent protein and Cre recombinase delivery alongside a library of CPPMs featuring equivalent side-chain configurations.

Knotted conformation is one of the most surprising topological features found in proteins, and understanding the folding mechanism of such knotted proteins remains a challenge. Here, we used optical tweezers (OT) to investigate the mechanical unfolding and folding behavior of a knotted protein tRNA (guanosine-1) methyltransferase (TrmD). We found that when stretched from its N- and C-termini, TrmD can be mechanically unfolded and stretched into a tightened trefoil knot, which is composed of 17 residues.
