Linoleic acid (LA) not only functions as an essential nutrient, but also profoundly modulates oxidative stress and inflammatory response. However, the potential mechanisms have not been adequately researched. Hence, this study examined the potential pharmacological roles of LA and the underlying mechanisms in mice with lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-associated acute liver injury (ALI).

October 2024

Chongqing Research Center for Pharmaceutical Engineering, College of Pharmacy, Chongqing Medical University, Chongqing, China.

Gouty arthritis is a chronic and progressive disease characterized by high urate levels in the joints and by an inflammatory immune microenvironment. Clinical data indicate that urate reduction therapy or anti-inflammatory therapy alone often fails to deliver satisfactory outcomes. Here we have developed a smart biomimetic nanosystem featuring a 'shell' composed of a fusion membrane derived from M2 macrophages and exosomes, which encapsulates liposomes loaded with a combination of uricase, platinum-in-hyaluronan/polydopamine nanozyme and resveratrol.

Combination of microparticles vaccine with MSI-1436 exerts a strong immune response for hepatocellular carcinoma.

September 2024

Laboratory of Immuno-Oncology, Clinical Oncology School of Fujian Medical University, Fujian Cancer Hospital, No. 420, Fuma Road, Jinan District, Fuzhou, Fujian 350014, China.

Although tumor cell-derived microparticles (MPs) vaccines have reportedly induced antitumor immune reactions for various cancers, the mechanism by which MPs derived from Hepa1-6 cells are taken up by dendritic cells (DCs) and provide the MPs antigens message to CD8+ T cells to exert their anti-hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) effects remain unclear. Furthermore, the role of MPs in combination with the small-molecule drug MSI-1436, an inhibitor of protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B), in HCC has not yet been reported. In this study, protein mass spectrometry combined with cytology revealed that MPs are mainly taken up by DCs via the clathrin-mediated endocytosis and phagocytosis pathway and localized mainly in lysosomes.

Purpose: Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common type of primary malignant bone tumor. Transducing a functional TP53 gene can effectively inhibit OS cell activity. Poly lactic acid-glycolic acid (PLGA) nanobubbles (NBs) mediated by focused ultrasound (US) can introduce exogenous genes into target cells in animal models, but this technique relies on the passive free diffusion of agents across the body.

Article Synopsis
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa forms biofilms that are tough to eliminate and can cause severe lung issues due to inflammation and oxidative stress.
  • Researchers created oil-in-water nanoemulsions (TD-αT NEs) that encapsulate the antibiotic tobramycin (TOB) to effectively target these bacterial biofilms and reduce lung damage.
  • When inhaled, these TD-αT NEs not only significantly decreased lung bacterial counts and inflammation but also protected against oxidative stress, making them a promising treatment for chronic lung infections.

Background: The cumulative burden of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is significant, with a noteworthy percentage (10%-15%) of patients with HCM per year experiencing major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs). A current risk stratification scheme for HCM had only limited accuracy in predicting sudden cardiac death (SCD) and failed to account for a broader spectrum of adverse cardiovascular events and cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) parameters.

Objectives: This study sought to develop and evaluate a machine learning (ML) framework that integrates CMR imaging and clinical characteristics to predict MACEs in patients with HCM.

Article Synopsis
  • Lung cancer (LC) is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in China, with the study analyzing its trends and risk factors from 1990 to 2019 and projecting the next 41 years.
  • Data collected on lung cancer incidence, deaths, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) revealed that all three metrics increased over the studied period, with specific risk factors like ambient particulate matter pollution showing significant rises while some factors like household air pollution decreased.
  • An autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model predicts continued increases in mortality and DALYs rates due to lung cancer, suggesting an ongoing escalation in the disease's burden in China.
